Midnights POV
I chug my drink while I'm panting from my intense training workout.
I should really catch my breath first but something about chugging and trying to breathe at the same time; the drink hits differently.
"Hmm, you did better today. But you need to work harder. White mentioned he feels like there's nothing left to teach you with the sword, so I've made a suggestion for tomorrow's training." He said slicking his hair back from his eyes.
I look up with curiosity and he grins widely.
"Tomorrow, you will take both me and White on at the same time. We will be combining sword training and the hand combat to see how well you can hold up in a real life situation. Call it a mock battle." He says with a challenge to his tone.
I grin widely at this new prospect and start to feel giddy.
"A mock battle!" I squeal with glee.
"That sounds amazing teacher!" I say with genuine enthusiasm.
He chuckles and smiles at me but quickly pales and composes himself.
I roll my eyes and throw over my shoulder, "I'm just finishing up Romeo. Calm down will ya?" I say feeling annoyed.
My teacher looks at me and I know what he's thinking.
How can she speak to him that way? Doesn't she know he's a well known assassin who won't hesitate to kill?
I smirk at him with a knowing look and he composes himself once more before dismissing me.
I prance over to Romeo with a giant grin and I animatedly tell him about what's coming for tomorrow's training but I don't get a reaction.
"What's wrong?" I ask suddenly feeling uneasy.
"I have spoken to your father about your teachers and they're being dismissed as of this afternoon. All memories of you will disappear the moment they leave the castle gates. They'll only know you as the princess of Slymethius." He says with all seriousness.
I chuckle at what he said but quickly sober up when I realize he wasn't kidding.
"What? Why?!" I yell at him. I turn to see my teacher but he had already walked off, probably already heading out with his son.
No! I...I don't want him to go... not again!
"He's not Ari. Why are you chasing after him?" Romeo yells out as I take off running to find them.
I don't know.
It's been three years and I've done nothing but work hard and keep them on my mind as teachers and nothing more.
So why am I running after him and his father?
My footsteps pound against the courtyard in hopes that I reach them before they forget me.
I turn the corner and run down the steps and finally spot them.
"Wait!" I cry out, reaching for them.
Both the boy and his father stop and turn towards me.
The boys face shows shock and then hardens while the fathers remain neutral.
"What do you want princess?" The boy yells impatiently.
I finish running the rest of the way and stop in front of them panting.
"Don't go..." I barely get out, my voice trembling.
The boys features soften for just a moment and then harden again.
"You wanted us to leave!" He shouts at me.
I flinch at his booming voice and draw my eyebrows in confusion.
"What do you mean I wanted you to leave?" I quiver out not understanding his anger either.
What did I even do?
"Sure I may act aloof and not want to get close to anyone but I enjoy our training sessions together! It's the only time I feel like I'm in control and alive." I yell, my face cracking into sadness.
"You...you're showing emotions?"
The boy says astonished.
In the three years he's known me, I did my best to act indifferent with everyone.
I just didn't want my heart to be let down again.
Fuck it.
"Please...if you guys go, I'll be so alone..." I say feeling like I'm losing Ari all over again.
Ari... I hate how you forgot about me the moment you and your parents walked out of those doors.
The boy steps forward and I step forwards with him, I look up at him with hope in my eyes.
"I think it's best we go." He says quietly as I feel all my hope come crashing down.
"I'm seventeen and my dad isn't going to be around forever. I feel like we have trained you well. Goodbye Midnight." He says turning to leave as I stand there feeling like a statue; I watch how they both walk out of the castle walls.
My heart starts to break and I feel the tears start to stream down my face.
"It's for the best Midnight." I hear Romeo say from behind me, no doubt in my mind that he heard and saw everything.
I spin on my heels and glare at him.
"Was this your doing?" I tremble out my rage as he just stands there with a blank face.
"He said I wanted them to leave but I never insinuated anything about it." I feel my green flames start to rise off my body the more my anger rises.
He sighs and nods his head with no shame or guilt.
"I hate you!" I scream and run towards the castle walls.
The guards at the gate see me running and instantly become battle ready to defend me from whatever danger lurks behind me but the closer I get I shake my head and tell them I'm ok.
"Open the gates! And don't let Fang leave with me. That's an order from your future queen!" I yell dashing through the small crack they made.
"Midnight, don't fucking do it! Get back here!" I hear Romeo roar through the closed door.
He bangs against the walls hard enough to send me a message of him being pissed off.
"White!" I yell out desperately, running, still in my training gear.
Him and his father both turn around and the moment they see me, they both assume the position of respect for the royal family and get down on a knee, heads bowed and a fist over there heart.
Murmurs and excited chatter is heard all around me and I slow my pace down and walk the rest of the way to them.
"Princess Midnight." They speak in unison, there tones appraising me.
"Please, don't bow. Stand up." I tremble out with authority.
They both rise and the boys eyes meet mine and I nearly choke on a sob when no recognition flickers behind those beautiful eyes.
I reach out my hand in an invitation and as soon as grabs it, I pull him into a hug, his audible gasp of shock can be heard as well as many jealous whispers from other males.
"Mate." He whispers softly.
I look up at him, my mouth a tiny "o".
"Congratulations son! I'm so proud that you found your mate so young." His father gushes in pride. White picks me up bridal style and we walk back to the castle while I'm blushing furiously in a daze.
"You...you don't have to hold me." I stammer out feeling bashful.
"Nonsense little mate. I will forever treat you like the queen you were born to be." He says so confidently that I eat up his words.
"But... I already have a mate White." I say timidly.
He falters and I see his jaw clench but he doesn't say anything else.
He gets me back to the gates and the guards open them and in walk White, his dad, and me.
"We're here to see the king!"
"I need to see my father!"
Me and White say at the same time causing us to break out into a fit of giggles.
"Midnight! What the fuck is wrong with you?! Do you like me being angry with you?" Fang hisses out as soon as we take a few steps in the castle walls.
Icy dread flows over me and I instantly clam up in shame in Whites arms.
"Fangie...i..."
"Not a word! His majesty is requesting your presence." He says with that no nonsense tone and then looks to White and bites out one last word with clenched teeth.
"Alone!"
