Capítulo 9: Chapter 9

Adela went where her mother and sister were always sitting. In front of the large window. But they were not there.

Then she remembered that they had gone to the market. She had forgotten it in all that happened.

"They probably wouldn't be back yet," she thought, and at that moment, there was a knock on the door. Immediately after, she heard quick steps heading to the door and opened it.

"How long does it take you to open a door?" Adela heard her mother saying, apparently, to the maid who had opened the door for them.

But the poor girl was not late. As soon as the door knocked, the maid immediately went to open it. It's just that Margaret always wanted to show her superiority. She was the house lady and could say and do whatever she wanted.

Adela hurried down the stairs and ran to greet them with joy. But she was restrained as soon as she saw the two porters following her mother loaded with the shopping that mother and daughter had done all these hours they had gone to the market.

Two maids came and took the shopping from the hands of the porters. Margaret paid them well, and they left pleased.

"Take shopping in my room," Margaret ordered, and the maids cringed to carry out their mistress' wish.

After the maids left, Adela started to hover around them excitedly, holding the note of Aunt Virginia in her hand. "I have news! I have great news!" she said with a melodious voice.

Emily looked at her and laughed, but her mother glared at her, and Adela stopped.

"What did you suffer, my child, and you do like a bee?"

Adela got serious. "Why like a bee?"

"Because only the bees wander around aimlessly making bbbzzzzzzzzzz," and she made circles with her hands.

"Um, mother, I think you confused them with flies. Flies do that."

Emily put her hand in front of her mouth in an attempt to hold back her laughter.

"Stop being a stupid girl Adela. I have never seen, how you called…Oh, flies. So they don't exist."

Adela looked at Emily, who just shrugged her shoulders as if she told her not to bother anymore because it wouldn't work out.

Adela got the point and changed the subject.

"The aunt's answer came. She is waiting for us at her house on Sunday after church."

"Oh, perfect!!" Emily exclaimed, excited by the news.

"Emily! This is not decent behavior for a noblewoman."

"Yes, mother. You're right. I am sorry. It will not happen again."

"Fine. I forgive you, but only for this time. On Sunday, I expect you to wear your best dresses. I don't want her to catch us in her mouth. You know how gossipy can be."

Oh! Mother, don't say that. Aunt Virginia would never gossip about us. She loves us." Adela told her.

"Why? Am I lying?"

"About what?" Adela asked, confused.

"For your aunt being gossiping. Don't you hear me when I am talking to you? "

Adela looked at Emily for help. Emily acted instantly.

"Yes, yes, mother, you are right. Come, I will escort you to your chamber. I think that a little rest would be refreshing," Emily hurried to help Adela.

"Yes, you are right. A little rest will be good."

"When you finish, come down to chat for a while," Adela whispered in Emily's ear as she passed by her, and Emily nodded okay.

Emily returned after a while, and Adela guided her to a corner to talk privately.

"I like that my aunt is gossipy. We learn different things if you understand me." "Adela told her in a playful tone in her voice and winked at her.

Emily giggled. "Yes, I got what you mean—the spicy ones. For the various 'ladies' who cheat on their husbands," she said somewhat aloud by mistake.

Adela got upset. "Shhh ... do you want anybody to hear us?" she told her, closing her mouth with her hand, and at the same time, she looked around to see if anyone overheard them.

Luckily for them, no one was around. The two girls did not want anyone to know that they talked about such things. It would be a great shame for the two girls.

Emily whispered to Adela. "Do you think that she will say anything new to us on Sunday?"

"Of course and she will, after so long that we have to see her, she will have a lot of things to tell us. I cannot wait."

"Tell me about it!"

"Can I ask you something, Emily?"

"Yes, tell me I'm listening to you."

"Aren't you curious to know what it's like to be with a man?"

Emily widened her eyes. Her cheeks flushed.

"You mean in bed?" she asked her somewhat stunned.

"Well, yes, where else? Come on, don't be ashamed. We are sisters. Tell me, and I will tell you too," Adela urged her.

"Okay. Um, the truth is… that… yes, I am curious to know what happens, how it happens. Oh, sister, what are you doing to me?" Emily said, holding her puffy cheeks in shame.

"Oh, but come now. I don't think it's so bad to talk about it. We are big girls. Girls ready for marriage, as the mother says."

"Anyway," Emily said, cooling her blushing face by making air with her hand. "Tell me about yourself now."

"I am also curious. Very curious; in fact, this made me just thought of something." Adela announced with a smile.

"What did you think?"

"On Sunday that we will go to Aunt Virginia, if we are lucky, at some point, we will be alone without the mother. We can ask her about that."

"WHAT?" Emily shouted, shocked.

"Shhh," Adela said, shaking her hands to Emily to volume her voice down. "Do you want to hear us? Why do you react like this? I am quite sure that Aunt Virginia does not have shyness issues. If we ask her, she will definitely glad to answer us. Wasn't she married? It doesn't matter if God did not bless their marriage with a child."

"Yes, it's a pity and not fair they didn't have children," Emily said with bitterness in her voice.

"That was always her big complaint from God and His choice not to bless her with a child. I suppose that is the reason why she loves us so much. That's why I insist on asking her. She will not deny us this favor, nor will she criticize us."

Emily thought about it for a while. "Okay, if you say so. But only if for some reason, we remain alone without the mother. "

"Of course."

"Okay then. I look forward! I am feeling we are going to have a nice time," Emily said with shining eyes.

"Just nice? We will have an amazing time!"

"Thank you very much for everything, sister," Emily said, looking gratefully at Adela and hugging her.

"Come on, Emily. I did not do anything. It was nothing in front of the joy I gave you. And in the future, we will arrange a lot of things to spent time together."

"You are the best sister in the world," Emily said with tears in her eyes.

Adela gave her a kiss on the cheek, and Emily left happy for her chamber.

Adela was left alone, and it was an opportunity to find Agnes. She wanted to speak to her.

She looked for her and found her cleaning the small back living room.

As soon as Agnes saw her welcomed her with a warm smile.

Adela returned the smile while she was approaching her.

"When you finish cleaning, come to my room. I will be waiting for you. I want to talk to you," Adela whispered, and little Agnes nodded.
