Capítulo 38: Annoying Traps

When mortals evolved to Devas after their Dharma awakening, their entire being took a long while before it adjusted to this new level of existence before it could begin to advance in ranks as a Deva. This was another reason why the EDF institute entrance exam usually took place six months after the day of awakening.

Although not everyone would adjust to this new state in such a short time as some people with pretty poor talents might use years just to get used to the new state. Some monsters, however, could adjust their being to this new state and even advance in ranks in such a brief time, such monsters were people like Zeralf, Endra, and Kitasha.

Two weeks before the beginning of the written exam, Zeralf was in his training room when he gained enlightenment and advanced to the marble ranks.

Silver and golden Ki filled the training room and his aura intensified as he rose in rank. He wasn't enlightened on any new technique though, rather, his previous techniques had all grown stronger and so was his physical stats, should he engage with those marble ranks he fought back in the past, he wouldn't even break a sweat to finish them.

Back to the exam, Zeralf was now in the middle of the winged spiders and from his space sense which could now reach a hundred meters, he knew that he still had a long way to go, that was if he took the low key approach, but was Zeralf someone who used the humble method? The answer was…

'' Spatial bullets... '' Silver spatial energy began to condense into a couple of dozens of spherical balls each about ten centimetres in circumference amidst the short pause. " …Chain explosion. '' Zeralf muttered silently his lips movements barely visible and the wind cooly blew his hair backwards

These spherical bullets charged at the winged spiders from all directions, in the air, on the ground and even those that were about to climb out of the ground.

'' BOOM!!! '' An ear wriggling explosion reverberated across the desert and some participants were blown away just from the impact of the explosion. Brown dust rose and formed a thick cloud that temporarily blinded everyone.

'' Screw you white haired, do you have to blow everything up? '' Endra cursed from where he was standing firm.

Kitasha too had her eyes wide opened and her jaw sagged in astonishment.

'' That was a crazy disregard for Ki, no? '' She questioned the air expecting no response apparently, but…

'' Haha, I told you that you would be in for surprises during this combat exam, princess…hehe. '' Endra appeared behind her like a ghost almost startling her.

'' Stop creeping me out. '' Kitasha jumped backwards to evade a corrosive web as she glared at Endra annoyingly.

When the dust cleared, the participants were even more surprised by the level of damage at which the attack took effect. Zeralf had single handedly wiped out a quarter of the winged spiders present here and fortunately for the others, he had gone deep into the creatures' ranks before unleashing such a powerful AOE, if not, some of them might've been squashed to unrecognizable meatballs.

'' What a wastrel. ''

'' Fool, using Ki without proper evaluation.''

'' Such a simp, trying to impress Lady Kitasha at the cost of draining out his Ki reserves. ''

'' As if I can't do that either, hmph, I'm just being cautious. ''

Envious and venomous thoughts ran through the participants' heads as they saw the effect of Zeralf's attack.

He didn't know any of them but some were already wishing him bad luck. Such was human nature, when they ended up seeing something marvellous that they could not do, they went ahead and spoke ill of others who were doing it.

But did Zeralf give a damn about what others thought of him?

He absolutely didn't, and that was why he teleported immediately the space was free, from the start he had wanted to teleport unrestrained but the winged spiders filled everywhere, now, however, the coast was cleared.

'' Rhh. '' Zeralf melted with the air and vanished from the onlookers' periphery.

'' He… he is gone. '' One of the participants murmured while releasing a long exhale.

Zeralf had put the winged spiders' lineup behind him but he had yet not left the desert. The winged spiders at first gave chase but when they got to a certain distance, they stopped, it was as though there was a barrier stopping them from advancing which made Zeralf understand that he had left the region of these hideous creatures and something new would come up.

''krack. '' Just as he thought, his right foot stepped on a certain area in the desert and his eyebrows perked. Without hesitating, he teleported twenty meters to his right.

'' Zing! '' A one meter long arrow made of sand struck his previous position and the ground slightly caved in.

'' Uh? '' Zeralf again teleported midair and he heard a boom from where he once was.

'' There are traps everywhere. '' He inferred from his first two encounters.

'' To think they will be this cunny, heh. '' His cold eyes gazed at the distance and his lips curved.

As soon as he got here, he had used space sense but his skills failed to capture anything until he activated the first trap.

That gave him a sudden sense of realization, he was still low in rank and some high ranked and cunning Devas could play him effortlessly without even getting down to force if he wasn't very careful.

Zeralf closed his eyes and analyzed the information that was relayed to him by space sense and also his perception to detect Ki fluctuation.

It was true that not every participant would have a skill like space sense so to be fair, they had to rely on their improved perception as a Deva to detect the traps and evade them. Zeralf however was using both and that made the level of difficulty drop.

'' Five in my three o'clock, two in my eleven o'clock and seven in my twelve o'clock, and that's what I can currently sense. '' Zeralf counted as he absorbed the information sent to his mind.

Some traps were also set in a way that one couldn't avoid and the participants just had to surmise from the level of Ki fluctuation to know which trap they would deliberately activate to avoid other stronger ones.

Zeralf had activated one of those traps since he wasn't left with any good option even with his teleportation unless he wanted to activate something above the marble rank which would waste his time.

A giant ball of ice gilded downward high from the space above his head and he noticed that the atmosphere had suddenly dropped and where he stepped on was now covered in a thin layer of ice.

A dark violet aura covered Zeralf's right hand as he lazily watched the giant ball of ice aim for him.

'' Doom!! '' His fist connected with the attack and a collision wave rippled from their points of impact making the ground underneath Zeralf depress and the upper layer of sand was blown away revealing a new layer of the ground that had now sunk in.

Zeralf didn't even bulge nor take a step back. He only gazed at the giant ice ball which had now turned to broken fragments and some had evaporated.

This was his Dharma of Chaos, just its aura that covered his forearms had smashed an attack at the marble rank to pieces.

'' Oh! What do we have here? '' Zeralf didn't need to turn to know who had arrived.

Endra had arrived at this point too and out of his usual recklessness, he had stepped on a trap immediately after he got here.

Two circular discs made of light aimed at him but he casually waved his black sceptre upward. The part of the sceptre with an ornamental design like that of an ancient beast collided with the two discs and no explosion or impact was even heard, the two discs just vanished like they never existed.

'' Uwwarh. '' Endra yawned and glanced at Zeralf. '' So we're doing some damn lookout thingy eh? ''

'' As if you don't have eyes. '' Kitasha cut in. She had arrived here too a minute later than Endra and her countenance was exuding displeasure and helplessness.

'' Slingg! '' Endra knowingly stepped on another trap which sent a fire arrow at him.

'' You idiot, why are you activating the traps so delightfully? '' Kitasha blurted out as she saw Endra activate two more traps simultaneously.

'' Ah? Of course, it's fun like this haha. '' Endra laughed and kicked into the air to dodge an earth spike.

'' What! '' Kitasha was bewildered at such uncivil behaviour. Their perception was supposed to be tested but this moron was actually going for the traps himself.

'' Wait till you activate the wrong trap. '' Kitasha jinxed as she dodge a spiky metal ball that aimed for her after failing to detect the trap that activated it.

'' Seems some people are having fun hehe, time to spice things up. '' Luna chuckled inside the room where she was watching over the participants as they advanced.
