The weapons that Giel chose and that were in the stands could be considered "Catalysts." Rare metals, minerals, and monster parts were used to create these weapons. They could conduct mana through them, but that did not negate their strength and sharpness.

If someone gives an ordinary human and a mage each a weapon of rank zero, of course, the mage was much stronger. He would cast a spell along with the Catalyst and overpower the ordinary human. However, if you arm one person with a simple steel sword and the other with a sword made of parts of a monster of rank zero, the result would be obvious.
