Although considered antiquated weapons by a long shot, they were still widely used in ocean warfare, because generally, there were no better alternatives, unless you were walking the path of magic or old artifact-level weapons.

Though it didn't decrease their lethality in the slightest, the weight, as well as momentum, were capable of denting the armor on the metal ships easily, and if they were any closer, the canon might have done more than just a dent.
