Rachel had witnessed Christopher's madness for Abigail the night before. She was afraid he would become enraged if he discovered Jasper had feelings for Abigail. She shuddered as she considered the consequences.
Jasper sensed Rachel standing behind him. He released Abigail and moved away, maintaining a distance. His face was flushed in embarrassment, which proved even more strongly that he loved Abigail.
He couldn't bring himself to look her in the eyes.
Rachel put the tray on the central table. "Eat first, Abi, and take your medicine. I'm going to take a bath." Her demeanor was solemn. Her voice had lost its previous sweetness.
She glanced at Jasper before going into her room. She did leave them alone because she couldn't say anything to Jasper right now because Abigail was so upset.
