He could have chosen to return home to Earth, or more likely to the academy, but the Oberan ship would have been destroyed before it could have got anywhere close. The exact same thing could have been said for any of the core systems of humanity, so he had no choice but to go to the Frontier. While it was still a huge risk for the Obera to be taking, it was far safer for them to take him there rather than the core systems.

Thanks to the stealth technology that the Obera had available to themselves, the main ship was able to go near a planet that lacked the technology of one in the core systems without being detected. As a result, Verodinar was able to take a ship to personally drop Gus off at a spaceport on one of the planets.
