Capítulo 77: Leaving the Nest
A family was gathered around a table and eating dinner. They were talking about what they did during the day. One of the plates was still full, the diner was clearly not interested in the food.
" Daas, Why are you not eating?" Daas was awakened from his thoughts by his mother's inquiry.
He quickly smiled and started enjoying the feast his mother prepared. This was actually the second day that he was able to eat solid foods. Today Michael had visited him for the third time; restoring most of his functions and giving him the ability to live a normal life. Daas still had injuries but that was not his main concern anymore.
Tomorrow Michael will make his final visit and fully heal Daas. Then he would have to give Michael an answer. Daas was actually looking forward to joining Michael and living the life of a mercenary. However, he still remembered the look that his mother gave him nearly a decade ago when he left to join the military. Not the mention, all the times he wished he could go home when he was deployed.
The past year that Daas spent with his family only made things worse for him. How could he leave them immediately after he was healed? Especially when they have been taking care of him the whole time. Dinner was over and Daas did not even notice. His mother approached him.
" What's bothering you Daas?" She asked.
Daas looked up and realized that he was still at the table while everyone else had finished eating. He knew that he could not fool his mother, so he decided to say the truth. Perhaps she can offer some advice.
"I don't know what to do after tomorrow. The Swami invited me to come with him." Daas admitted. He did not want to tell her who the Swami really was; therefore, he decided to go along with the act.
"Why are you disturbed? Don't you want to go with the Swami?" The mother asked.
"Yes, but I don't want to leave you again. I want to stay and be with everyone." Daas admitted.
His mother grasped his hand and gently patted his head. "Did you know that I used to live in a small village when I was a child. I wanted to go study at a college in the city, but my parents did not let me go. I worked hard and got a scholarship; then I was able to convince them to let me go. To this day, I am glad that I came to the city. I met your father here and I was blessed with my three children. None of that would have happened if I was living in the village. I never belonged in that Village."
The mother continued. "Son, we are not going anywhere. You can always come to visit us on vacations. I am sure the Swami will let you come. I know that you are meant for bigger things. I want you to go; do not limit yourself to our small city. There is a whole world out there to see."
Daas held his mother's hands and thanked her. Somehow, she always knew exactly what to tell him. With a clear mind, he went to bed; He knew what he was going to tell Michael tomorrow.

Michael and Vishnu were eating breakfast at a small restaurant. Today was going to be the last day he would visit Daas. Michael was nervous; He did give Daas the free will to reject his offer. But he would be heartbroken if Daas actually did not come.
Michael did not expect to recruit everyone that he was aiming for, but he had invested much more on Daas and Vishnu because of their potential and experience. They weren't just Elite soldiers; they were also competent officers who would lead on the battlefield. After all, Michael was not a General; he couldn't lead the soldiers during their missions.
Therefore, Daas was a key personnel in his future plans. Michael turned to Vishnu; hoping that he could predict Daas's choice.
" What do you think Daas will do?" Michael asked.
" He will join." Vishnu declared.
" How can you be so sure?" Michael asked; Even he was not that confident.
Vishnu looked up and smile. " Michael you don't understand soldiers. See there are a few types of people who will join the military. There is the type who are doing it because they want to get out of a bad situation at home. These guys would just serve the minimum years and then leave once they acquire better opportunities.
There are the ones that are doing it because they are forced to; usually by their parents who are also soldiers. These guys are easy to spot. They always act arrogant and never work hard.
Then there are the ones that join because they want to actually serve in the military. After some years some of these guys will learn that the military is not for them and they will drop out. The ones that stay will find a place where they belong and won't leave unless they are forced to retire.
Daas was obviously the latter. There was no need for him to join the elite paramilitary unit if he did not want to. He could have easily gotten a cushy desk job and retired with the full pension, while avoiding the risk from combat. But Daas chose to embrace the risk because he belongs in the battlefield.
When a soldier is in the civilian world; its like he is in somebody else 's home. It nice to do it once in a while, but you get this urge to come back home; where you truly belong. As long as he can, Daas will try to go home. So I am sure that he will accept your offer."
Michael contemplated Vishnu's explanation. Although he thought that Vishnu was oversimplifying things; he agreed with most of what he was saying. "Well, only one way to find out. Let's go" Michael paid the bill and started the journey to Das's home.
Michael arrived at Das's house and was greeted by his family. Apparently, even his extended family was gathered because there were a lot more people than he expected. Michael started the poojas. This time Daas was sitting next to his parents and participating in the prayers.
After Michael finished the pooja, he healed Daas one last time. This time there was less astonishment since everybody already knew what to expect. Daas's mother had actually prepared a feast and did not let Michael go until he participated. Therefore Michael reluctantly ate while avoiding the probing questions from the extended family.
Some of them were even asking Michael to visit their homes and heal their family members. Michael apologized and politely turned down their requests. He quickly finished lunch and approached Daas.
" So what did you decide?" Michael asked Daas.
" I will come with you. As long as the conditions in the contract are maintained I will fight for you." Daas replied.
Michael could barely contain his joy. " Great, meet me at the Maharajas hotel tomorrow. Make sure you are packed and ready to leave."
Michael received Daas's confirmation and quickly left the house before others could pester him.
The next day Daas joined Michael and Vishnu; they departed to Lucknow to recruit a soldier dying from Lung cancer.
