...nnnnnngh...
I opened my eyes and found myself in my own bed, in m little apartment with very little space and very overpriced rent.
It felt like my body was completely fine -as if sleeping through my day off was exactly what was needed to relieve the tension in my muscles.
Wow... I need to take a day off more often and...
…
"...crap..."
I burrowed my face into the pillow and sobbed.
Who was I trying to fool with that act?
What was okay?
I felt like shit – worse than shit...!
That dream I had... the forest in the mountain... the werewolves... and... Lucian...
Everything felt so real...!
...which made it ten times as horrible to be brought back to reality...
"What time is it anyway...?"
I mumbled to myself and reached for the phone, charging on the nightstand right next to my bed – I did so without looking and knocked something on the floor, but I couldn't care less about whatever it was.
I tapped the screen to wake it up and was greeted by the default wallpaper and the big digital number informing me that it was 10:21am, and a notification about the last seven missed calls.
10:21am, huh...
...I start work at...
...9:00am...
"AAAHHH!"
I jumped out of the bed in absolute terror!
Forget about a morning shower! Rushed to the closet and hurriedly put on random clothes.
Makeup?
Are you insane?!
I threw a brush into my purse together with the phone and a charger and rushed out of my apartment putting on shoes while running.
My usual bus was long gone since there's no way public transport would wait over three hours for anyone so I had to wait for the next one – that gave me enough time to check the missed calls.
One was from my mother – the other six were all from my company's number, more specifically, the number of my direct superior, Rose..!
"...ugh...!"
Gritting my teeth, I hurriedly called him back – and my call was picked up almost instantly as if he was waiting for it...
...bad sign...
"Mister Rose?! I'm terribly sorry! I overslept! Is it possible for me to take another day off?"
I panicked and blurted out – instantly regretting my words.
Overslept...?
I should have told him that the bus got canceled or that there was huge traffic or something!
Too much sleep must have messed with me after all...!
"Miss Smith? Don't be ridiculous. You are an adult – it's high time to start acting as one – you already are enough of a burden for your coworkers."
Rose's dry voice almost made my ears bleed even through the speaker.
And did he just said that I am a burden for my coworkers?!
HUH?!
Excuse me?!
The last time I checked I had to deal with all the problems they caused by slacking off!
...is exactly what I did not say to him...
"I'm sorry! I'm sorry! I will be there as soon as possible!"
Instead, I apologized, bowing to the phone like a doormat.
"You already threw a wrench in our schedule with that sudden day off! As for your tardiness – you will simply stay that much later to make up for it."
Rose scoffed at me, torturing me with his awful voice.
"Wh-what...?! B-but I have been staying overtime past this whole week to deal with all the assignments and additional paperwork...!"
I gasped in disbelief.
"This and that are two different things – both are the consequences of your own actions that you must learn to deal with if you want to keep a job in this city – am I clear?"
What the... was... was he threatening me...?!
"B-but...!"
"The time is ticking, Miss Smith."
Rose ended our call leaving me with his last condescending remark.
...that...!
...this damned balding, pale son of a...!
I clenched my phone, shaking from the almighty anger filling every part of my body...!
Until the bus arrived and I had to get on it and let myself be driven to my prison...
Workplace.
I wanted to say workplace.
Of course, there were no free seats so I just found the least crowded spot for myself to stand on and checked the news on my phone...
I swiped through the headlines on autopilot – until one of them had caught my attention.
Young CEO of Moonsimonial Corp. Lucian King signs a contract to save over 100,000 sq mi of the Amazon rainforest.
Oh, Moonsimonial Corp. I remember! It was one of the places I sent out applications to, since they were hiring but never got a call and had to take what was given to me instead...
Oh well, at least they are doing something for the good of the...
"Eh...?"
I loudly sucked in some air.
Wait, what...?
Lucian King?
Like, the handsome guy I've dreamt about?
No way...! Right...?
That's just a coincidence, I probably just saw the name amongst the headlines like this before and since it sounded cool I connected it with some handsome actor or model...
I clicked on the headline to show the full story.
It brought me to an article with the photo of a handsome young man with jet-black hair and eyes so incredibly green they could be mistaken for actual emeralds...
Whoa...!
That's him!
The guy I dreamt about!
Ho-la-la...!
I might be overworking myself half to death but my brain sure knows how to pick the very best subject to dream about to relieve some stress!
My heart rate increased merely because I looked at Lucian's photo for a little while.
...but at the same time, I felt bad again...
I got reminded of the sweet dream but the reality smacked me down twice as hard – the dreams will have to stay the only place where I could meet someone like him – we simply lived in two separate worlds...
Huh... I wonder is that why I made him and his employees werewolves...?
I guess that subconsciously I think that meeting a mythical beast is easier than meeting a successful handsome guy who would be interested in me...
...I should stop thinking about it, the more I analyze it, the more depressed I get...
Still...
The article was from today and it specified that it was an exclusive scoop on the story since the contract was signed yesterday night...
…
Didn't Lucian in my dream said something about signing a contract that would help their Latin-American brethren...
Latin-American...
Amazon Rainforest...
…!
Have... have I been so tired that I somehow got a prophetic dream...?!
I couldn't help myself and gasp.
Oh well, I am sure that it was fine to indulge myself one more time and return to my dream, but the bus has pulled to my stop so I walked out and jogged the rest of the way to my workplace – an avant-garde skyscraper which design would stop being popular in a few more years, than had cost a ridiculous amount of money, that the company could have spent on hiring more workers, or raise the wages for the already hired ones.
Like me.
Mostly me.
I literally hate every single other person in this building, and I'm not at all surprised that in my dream I made them all vampires.
Though it seems like I subconsciously pinned them as the beautiful sparkling types...
...a mistake... I would love to have a dream when that creep Rose is turning into a puff of smoke and a little pile of miserable ash the moment sunlight hits him.
...oh well, maybe next time...
I sighed and entered the building.
"Ah, Miss Smith."
One of the security guards spotted me instantly and was already walking my way.
"Right, right, a moment!"
I raised my hand and started looking for my employee card.
The security guard's footsteps stopped abruptly but I didn't really pay attention to that, because I managed to find my card – finally - and so I offered it to the man, expecting him to be standing right in front of me waiting for it.
"He.. re..?"
I stuttered in confusion once I realized that the guard is in front of me, but he's keeping at least a nine-foot distance between us – and when I reached my hand towards him, he pulled back even farther!
"Umm... my card...?"
I asked with hesitation, tilting my head, looking at the man in confusion.
I quickly glanced down to make sure that there wasn't something wrong with my clothes, but no – everything was in order.
"I-it's alright, miss Smith... please... please go to my desk and put the card on the scanner."
The guard waved at me from a distance and shouted the instructions without the slightest intention of getting closer.
…
Well... that certainly wasn't the usual reaction...
Even so, I was already very late and had no time to think about this new behavior, so I did as the security guard had told me and then hurried through the next door.
"...ACK..!"
And when I passed near the guard on my way, he let out a panicked scream and backed off as fast as he could...
...and he was surprisingly fast too... they sure aren't messing around with hiring the athletic types, huh...
What was his problem?!
I thought to myself, walking as fast as I could without actually running, but that one odd encounter was merely the beginning of one of the strangest days of my entire life...
