Resumen
Angel Draiker, a troubled African American teenager, has spent four years in juvenile detention after being caught joyriding, an outlet for the pain he feels from losing his father to police brutality. Now 18 and released for good behavior, Angel struggles to reintegrate into life with his mother and grandparents, feeling disconnected and restless. His love for speed and flight, which once provided an escape, now leaves him feeling empty.
As part of his release conditions, Angel is sent to counseling, where his counselor, Mrs. Flowers, encourages him to join a trip to The Sanctuary of Fire—a cutting-edge wildlife reserve that houses both extinct creatures and experimental hybrids. Initially dismissive of the trip, Angel's interest is piqued when he reconnects with his old friends from juvenile hall, who are also joining the excursion.
At the Sanctuary, Angel encounters a wolf-dragon hybrid, a fierce and majestic creature that immediately captivates him. Despite the dragon's initial aggression, a bond begins to form after Angel bravely saves the dragon's mate's egg from a loose predator. This act of courage earns the dragon’s respect and begins to heal something deep within Angel.
As the story unfolds, Angel and his friends are drawn into the mysteries of The Sanctuary, uncovering secrets about the creatures and the experiments being conducted. Angel's connection to the wolf-dragon grows, mirroring his journey of self-discovery and redemption. Through their bond, Angel learns to confront his past, embrace his future, and find a new purpose in life.
The story explores themes of redemption, the power of connection—both human and animal—and the courage to face the challenges of the past while forging a new path forward.
