Capítulo 1: The Hogwarts Letter

Ruby Ravenwing was a strange girl. She could do things no one else could. You would often find her with her nose in a book, and rarely the same book twice.

She had an incredible memory, which was a blessing and a curse.

It was a blessing to never forget her homework, always clean her room, and know what most adults were talking about, but never forgetting things meant she would always remember the day she became an orphan.

She was only one year old. Her parents, Raymond and Marrisa Ravenwing, had just gotten home from work. After her babysitter got paid and left, the doorbell rang. Ruby never saw his face, and he didn't talk either. She watched him murder her parents in cold blood, and in a most horrific way.

She didn't know why he didn't kill her too, but that day, she was spared. She was sent to the nearest orphanage, where she grew up.

Her oddity was something she hid from everyone, so in turn, she hid herself. She was rarely seen and never heard, and no one could get her to start a conversation first.

When she did speak, however, she was articulate and clear. She held many meaningful conversations with the people who visited and helped them carry whatever they brought.

On the 25th of August, two people visited that would change her life.

"Someone get the door!" the matron hollered.

"Welcome to Wool's orphanage, how are you today?" Ruby politely inquired.

"I'm doing just fine, sweetie. I've just got some journals for you kids, they've been in my shop for ages!"

"Let me take those for you, Mrs?

"Oswald, thank you, dear."

"Who was it?" Ms. Cole, the matron, yelled once again.

"That was Mrs. Oswald, Ms. Cole." She spoke loudly but refrained from yelling.

Ruby finished washing the dishes like she'd been assigned before settling in her shared room with a book.

Professor Minerva McGonagall stepped up to the doorstep of a shabby orphanage, where a young Tom Riddle had once lived.

Knocking loudly on the door, she waited for someone to answer.

"Yes?" a woman opened the door.

"Minerva McGonagall," She stuck out her hand. "I'm here to discuss the schooling options of Ruby Ravenwing."

"Come in." the woman invited. "She's a bright one. Always has a book. The living room's here, sit down, won't you?"

"Thank you. Now, young Ruby has been accepted into a private school in Scotland. As an orphan, she'll have most of her expenses covered by the trust fund. We would board her from September to May, then she would come back here for the summer. They can also stay during Christmas break. The school lasts seven years and will prepare them for the real world. All we need is your signature, and I'll take her for her supplies."

"Sounds reasonable, where do I sign?"

"Right here."

"Would you like to talk to Ruby now?'

"Thank you, yes," McGonagall answered.

"Miles, where's Ruby?" Ms. Coles asked the caretaker, who'd just walked in the room.

"Girl's dorm." came the short answer.

"Up those stairs, second door on the left." Ms. Cole directed.

Minerva climbed the rickety steps, pulling open an old, worn door to reveal a large room crammed with beds.

All of them were bunks, but some had three instead of two. Some girls were sleeping, others writing papers, and a few were reading a book. On the lowest bed of a three-bed-bunk, in the very corner, sat a very pretty girl. She had soft black hair that cascaded down her back, and a pair of stunning green eyes that caught all the light in the dimly lit room. With a book in her hand, she looked exactly like the picture of Rowena Ravenclaw in the staffroom.

From the same colored eyes and hair to the book she was reading, she matched the portrait in all but the background.

"Hello, who are you looking for? Maybe I can help you?" the young child politely asked, closing her book.

"I'm Minerva McGonagall. Where could I find Ruby Ravenwing?" McGonagall was almost positive this girl was her but asked anyway.

"That would be me. Would you like to talk outside? Some of the girls are still tired from last night."

"Sure." Minerva agreed, wanting to talk with her alone anyway. "What happened last night?"

"Jillian, Micah, Sammy, and Patrick wouldn't fall asleep, so we had to take turns watching them. What can I do for you?" Ruby asked, gesturing to a bench they could use.

"You have been accepted into a school in Scotland."

"Why?" Ruby asked.

"Your talents." Minerva handed her a letter.

On the letter, in the same stunning green as the color of her eyes, was her name and address.

She carefully ripped the letter open, pulling our two sheets of paper.

"Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry." She read aloud.

She read the rest silently, with a puzzled expression on her face.

"This means I'm a witch, which would explain how I grabbed that book from the top shelf, but if magic was real, wouldn't everyone have heard of it?" Ruby fired off the question as soon as she'd finished reading.

Minerva had not expected her to accept her magic so quickly. "The Statue of Secrecy means we can't tell muggles about magic or show them any magic."

"What's a muggle?"

"Someone not born from a noble wizarding family. You would be a Muggleborn because your parents had no magic, but you do, so your also a witch. That means you'd be called a muggleborn witch."

"What would you call people whose parents can do magic?"

"Some call them purebloods." Minerva sounded slightly uncomfortable.

"Why not just call them magical?"

"I.. Don't know."

"Oh. Where do I get the stuff on the second page?"

"Diagon Alley. It's like a wizard's shopping mall."

"How do I get there? Do wizards pay in pounds? Do you use a wand, like in the books?"

"Yes, we use wands. No, wizards pay in Galleons, Sickles, and Knuts instead of pounds. I'll be taking you there, and it's in London, about a mile from here." Minerva answered them backward.

"When can we go?"

"Right now, I suppose."

"Can we?" Ruby grinned. "Awesome."
