Capítulo 38: Edward, the almost-former hunter

Hades followed Gabriella and the guild receptionist outside the guild. The training ground at the back was a large dirt field where hunters test their abilities.

As the receptionist opened the wooden door, the hunters training inside stopped glaring at her. She smiled, "We have a newbie test, care to leave for a few minutes?"

They all gave her a sad look sighing, one woman who had a big hat, red eyes, and long black hair approached her. "Nina, just one more explosion."

Nina frowned, "No, you aren't here to train. You just like playing with it." Nina walked past the woman, "Well be done quickly, just wait a bit."

The woman sighed with a sad face and she walked to the back, as she passed by Hades she stared back at him. "Can I have a moment of your time?" She asked.

Hades turned toward her with a surprised face, not many people talked to him like this. "What is it?"

She scanned him with her eyes, "I sense a strange thing about you. Can you use magic?"

Hades shook his head, "Don't know what magic is."

"Really? How do you fight then? I don't see you carrying a knife let alone a blade." She wandered, unable to get the uneasy feeling from her head.

"I punch things." Hade swung his fist [Repulsion] BAM! A blast of air released, it wasn't big as he wasn't even trying to hit something.

Seeing that the woman sight, "A strengthening ability, a volatile brute one. Sorry for the unneeded question." She turned around and walked away but suddenly stopped looking back at Hades, "We hunters fight as teams, when alone we usually retreat. You and the lady over there are a team, remember that." She then waved her hand and left.

Hades looked at her confused, what was her deal?

"Hades, what are you doing? The test is about to start." Gabriella called him, exhaustion was clear as day on her face.

When Hades approached, Gabriella and the receptionist Nina were accompanied by a bulky man wielding a massive battleaxe.

As Hades scanned him with his eyes, the man looked in his late thirties, tall and a bit brawny with a short beard. Wearing plate armor that has seen some fights, even though it still glowed in the sun.

"You the guy? Hear a fuss in the guild earlier." The man looked at Hades with a smile.

"And you?" Hades glared back at him.

"Call me Edward, an almost former hunter. I will be testing you today." He smiled shaking the handle of his axe. "I was a chopper, the one handling the big weapons to cut the massive monsters. With age you lose that strength, need to retire when the back starts grinding." He patted his hip, lower back pain had taken a tool at him.

Nina lifted her hand by Edward's side "Sir Edward here has been an excellent hunter in his golden days. When hunting big monsters, the essential thing is to trap them first. Sir Edward here was the one responsible for killing the trapped monster by chopping the head."

"You stopped?" Hades looked at Edward with a puzzled face.

"Of course, back pain. It's dangerous for everyone if I can't kill the monster in one hit so I retired." Edward smiled lifting his battle axe and handing it to Hades.

As Hades tried lifting it, he couldn't. It was heavy, unbalanced, and unwieldy by all means. Edward laughed seeing Hades struggle to move it, "Don't try, swinging this for years is what mess your health." He took the battleaxe from Hades and laid it on his shoulder.

Gabriella smiled, "Hades, you can go first. I will be sitting to the side."

Nina nodded, "Sir Edward, make sure you get a good feel for his strength."

Edward frowned, "Get a good feel? Then give the kid a sword, he needs something to block with or swing."

Nina smiled pointing with her hand to a table to the side. The table was jammed full of sharp steel blades "He could grab one from there if he wants, we won't force him though."

Gabriella looked worried for a moment, "You use real swords for testing and training?"

Edward looked at her with a big smile, "Of course lady. Those who can't take the risk of playing with real weapons have no business in hunting monsters. It's either you take risks or avoid them all."

Gabriella looked at Hades, "Don't stab him, he will die. Remember, no killing." Hades nodded, he could already tell that the man was to not be killed.

Edward burst laughing, "Color me surprised, I would love it if he killed me. That would mean the next generation would do better than us." The then quickly scratched his beard, "No, I have a wife and kids, dying is probably a bad idea. Sorry, kid, I'm not dying today." The moment Edward slammed his battleaxe on the ground, it caused a faint ripple with an oppressive feeling.

Hades walked toward the table and picked a sword that seemed similar to the one used by Cael. That was the only knowledge he has about swords.

"This one looks good." Hades walked toward Edward dragging the tip of the Longsword on the ground, CRIIIIIIIIII!

Edward looked at Hades with a puzzled face, "That will dull the tip, hold the sword up. You will not be able to stab with it."

Hades smiled, "I'm not going to stab…just going to swing it like Cael and see how it goes."

Edward crossed his eyebrows and stared at Hades, "Cael? Cael Vendetta, the captain of the guards? Fine, show me what you learned from him."

BAM! Hades immediately charged with [Repulsion] the moment he got close, Edward swung the massive battleaxe horizontally.

Hades lowered his body, sliding under the attack while swinging the sword. CLANG! He smacked Edward's back leg with the flat of the blade knocking him off. Edward immediately shifted his weight before he could hit the ground and turned to face Hades.

"A nimble one, I would increase the speed a bit," Edward said but quickly noticed that Hades was glaring at his sword.

The sword's blade was a little bit bent, and Edward's footguard had a small dent in it. Hades knocked on the blade with his fist, "Is this a good sword? It didn't cut when I swung it." He wondered which scared Edward a bit.

'Hold up, he was trying to cut my leg? I thought he used the flat intentionally…' He clenched his fist on the battleaxe grip and resolved himself to be serious. Something was off with this newbie.

Hades stared at his blade and concluded, "I didn't swing it hard enough, need to put more strength in it."

Hades had no knowledge about how to use a sword. To him, it was no different from a harder and fancier stick.

Grabbing the sword with both hands, he approached Edward wiggling the sword in the air as if it was a metal bat.

This time Edward charged. Thud! Thud! Thud! Thud! GRWAA! Screaming he swings his axe. Hades dodged to the side but Edward had predicted that, Thwack! He kicked Hades away.

[Attraction] Hades bounced right back in.

BONK!
