Capítulo 39: Chapter 39
After entering the city the walked looked at all the city had to give the unique clothing, wines and finally the went too what was a colosseum and ethewold described what it was used for which Sigurd said " they let their warriors fight to prove themselves and to the people what great fighters they were, this sounds good," but ethewold corrected them and said it was slaves that fought and the people who build didn't fight and Ragnar said that only coward will not fight, which sweyn was in agreement Olaf was enamored by the way the homes was built,he asked ethewold " what is the material used to make all this homes from its much stronger than wood," to which the priest explained that it was stone that was used and described how it was used to help make the houses and roads to their carts to move easily around their kingdom.
While they walked through the market they heard people talking and one that got his attention there was conversation about lothair and his army moving to the papal state territory, as the king was informed there was mercenaries in the area that was hired by the rebels to attack the king while he was laying siege to them, this made Olaf angry as that man who wanted them to fight sold them out to weaken the king forces.
sweyn now asked " what do we do now olaf they know we are here?" Olaf was in a tough bind as he wanted to stay to look at more of the city but he couldn't risk losing his army and way of going back home and order for them to return to the ship, they rode their horses hard and few hours later they reached the cave, there he was informed that a force of a thousand men were searching and the man leading them was Angelo. This angered Olaf who thought of ambushing them, but decided against it and told the men they would sail down Italy coastline.
As they were starting sailing one of the Vikings shouted saying the army frankia was ambushed, when Olaf looked he realized it was a trap for the kings army as they are now brought out a 1000 men away from the army and wanted the Vikings to fight and weaken them but since they were gone it looked like they had no choice but to fight themselves.
Olaf spoke "let's settle the ships nearby and watch the battle," they moved the ship to behind a hill and stayed hidden to watch, from the beginning the rebels had the surprise attack on their side but after sometime the Frankish army which was better trained and armed started turning the fight around and in the end the rebels were destroyed and the Frankish army decreased by half the size.
This was when Olaf said " let's attack the Frankish army but if you find Angelo capture him I'll kill him myself," that was when the fresh Vikings charged down and hit the tires and weaken Frankish men and it turned one side as the Vikings cut them down.
An hour later the battle field was cleared out as Olaf stood before Angelo who said " thank you for helping us, you have our gratitude," Olaf lifted his ax and said " well you sold us and we know so don't waste my time," Angelo spoke " well I was willing to do anything to fight lothair rule," when he heard this Olaf looked in thought and changed his mind, he said " I was going to kill you before but I see your more valuable alive," this confused the jarls and son who saw how angry Olaf was but the confusion would increase even more with what he would say next " in fact I will give you all my treasure which you can use to raise an army and with the steel and armory here you an raise a bigger rebellion against them," this brought happiness to Angelo who was worried that the rebellion would die down but with the support it would let the rebellion continue, no it would rise higher and he thank Olaf for it.
After sending the gold and silver with the rebels Ragnar asked " okay Olaf you didn't kill the man who sold you out but gave him gold, why would you do that?"
Olaf spoke "well Sigurd can you tell me why I did it?"
Sigurd knew this was another test by his father and said " if there is a rebellion happening in the south that will reduce the army that will be in the north,"
Olaf smiled at his son's answer and nodded to it while saying " let them have treasure that won't hurt us as we will pick the one in Lisbon and give the Frankish kingdom trouble here I say it's worth it, but I wish we could have gone to Constantinople, the priest said it was greater than any city has to offer, but we need to return home we have sailed far to the new lands made friends,fought great battles and feasted great banquets.
The Vikings got on their ships and sailed back home.
