Capítulo 17: A tale from another world

White wandered around the mortal city, observing their mundane life. It was a simple place. There were no majestic buildings of the royalty nor there were magical structures of cultivators. The people dressed humbly as they went on their ordinary life. Without the rest of the group, White was not as conspicuous. Looks were still thrown at him because of his outfit. With one glance, anyone would know that it was made from good materials. White could change his clothes into a more modest one but he never minded being a center of attention. The people here also knew to mind their own business. No point in causing a needless fuss.

The sun had long set and the moon took its turn in the sky. White jumped into the highest building's roof in the city. He took a seat and waited. Seconds later, another person joined him.

White said, "Usually when one watches the moon, it will be accompanied by a drink. Unfortunately, I do not have any."

"I don't like to drink," Ruan Yanxi said. He had changed into a clean set of clothes. His hair which was tied into a high ponytail swayed softly.

"Still remember your preference? Anything else you want to share? How about the fact that you are a cultivator?"

"You know who I am."

"Nope. I had been a shut-in for quite some time so I'm out of the loops. I don't even know the current existing kingdoms. But I've entered your consciousness it is not hard to see that you're a cultivator."

"But you still asked that question when I can still hear you."

"Is that so?" White smiled.

"You know who did this to me."

"We have the same enemy. I need the information that has been locked in your mind and you need to remember your past. Cooperation should begin with a degree of trust."

Ruan Yanxi narrowed his eyes. "You keep many secrets."

"I said a degree of trust not pouring my deepest heart desire to you. Won't you sit? It's tiring looking up at you."

"Hmm." Ruan Yanxi turned away and left.

"He's shy." White grinned.

The group already set off when dawn arrived. Nea immediately hovered around their new party member like a curious cat.

"We didn't talk yesterday," Nea said. "My name is Nea. Nice to meet you."

"Hmm."

"Geez, not much of a talker huh."

"He's just shy," White said, putting his hand on Nea's head.

"Aagh! Don't touch my head." Nea swatted White's hand away and retreated.

"Hurry up," Brianna interrupted. "Our ride is here."

A cart was waiting for them not far away.

"Wouldn't it be faster if we just run?" Nea asked.

"We have someone who is recuperating." Subtly implying that a non-cultivator couldn't keep up with them.

"Oh yeah."

They all got on the cart and began their slow journey. There was not much to be seen at the border. The endless expanse of wilderness and some rare appearance of its inhabitants. Nea who had never liked to stay still soon felt restless.

Brianna said, "Calm yourself, if you can't handle this little hardship don't expect to get far with your cultivation."

Nea stuck out her tongue.

"She's young," White said. "It is not strange to be so jittery. How about I tell you a story?"

"A story? Sure."

"Well then. Once upon a time, in a world without cultivation, there was a young girl."

"Wait, no cultivation?"

"Why is that so surprising? There are countless worlds in the universe each with its own rules. This world blessed its inhabitants with the power to cultivate. There are worlds with different rules to utilize the world's energy."

"Have you been to many of them?" Nea's eyes widened in wonder.

"I have seen many. We're getting sidetracked, do you want to hear it or not?"

Nea nodded eagerly.

"This girl is born as a mage. I suppose you can say mages are rather similar to cultivators. Mages can borrow the power of the world though most can only manipulate a small quantity of it. Despite this gift she has, she is born as a pariah, a slave. Every day she worked tirelessly and without thanks. Her ability to utilize magic is limited and she couldn't use it to break the shackles enforced upon her. One day, she met a young boy born of nobility. The boy took pity on her and began to teach her magic. He was an awkward boy with none of the social skills needed to be a proper noble. The company of a sweet and innocent girl was more than enough for him.

"But one day, his young fiancee found out. Burned with jealousy, she ordered the girl to be whipped. The boy protected her. The boy's parents were enraged seeing his protecting a pariah. So they gave him a choice, either to kill the girl or be exiled. The boy chose exile. The fiancee was so mad and humiliated. She was born in a noble family and a genius mage yet her fiance chose a slave over her. She couldn't handle the insult. When the boy and the girl left the city. The ex-fiancee assaulted them, killing the boy. Seeing the only person that had treated her well died, the little girl lost her mind and turned into a witch."

"A witch?" Nea asked.

White explained, "There was an interesting yet odd occurrence where some mages could transform into beasts called witches. Their rage, sorrow, and hopelessness manifested themselves and changed those mages into witches. They were the embodiment of those negative feelings which caused them to destroy anything in their path. There were few who somehow still maintained their former personality but we would not touch on that."

"So the girl turned into a witch and killed the former fiancee?" Nea guessed.

"Yes, but she didn't stop there. The witch saw the world as meaningless and proceeded to destroy the town. No one was spared. But the town's destruction didn't bring release, so the witch continued to unleash its wrath and destroy more cities and killed countless lives."

"No one stopped her?" Nea asked.

"Someone finally did. But they couldn't kill the witch and merely sealed it away. And so the witch continued to rage in its prison, waiting for the moment it could once again wreak havoc upon the world."

"Well, that's not a nice story."

White murmured, "Not all have their a happy life. Not everyone gained their happy ending. Not all evil received justice. Such is life."

Nea crossed her arms. "With this type of thinking, no wonder you sulked over a millennium."

White laughed. "I suppose you're right."

Nea raised her chin and said, "Anyway, I don't think life is that bad. You should always fight for a brighter future and never give up."

"Ah to be young. I wish you never lose that optimistic view of life. How dreary it would be if everyone sulks like me."
