It was yet another peaceful day on Earth if one didn't take into account the constant internal political struggle among humans. The classes for the day had ended, and students could be seen roaming about in the park, going on dates, sharing intimate moments, and even preparing for the upcoming event.
However, Rayne was nowhere to be found at the military base. Instead, he was deep in meditation at the temple, and he wasn't alone. With him were two captivating individuals—the blonde-haired beauty named Erin, also in a meditative state, and a young girl with short black hair and a fair porcelain-like complexion. Her almond-shaped eyes, adorned with a pair of large red irises, emitted an otherworldly luminescence as she gazed intently at the flowing water of the stream.
Erin's eyes fluttered open as she woke up from her meditation, releasing a misty breath as she slowly stood up. Her gaze shifted towards Rayne, then turned to Cia, who was looking at her.
"Still hasn't woken up," Cia responded, as if anticipating Erin's forthcoming question. "And I don't think he'll be waking up anytime soon."
Upon hearing it, Erin raised an eyebrow before asking, "And why do you think so?"
"Don't know, just a feeling," Cia calmly replied.
"Alright then, I'll be on my way," Erin said.
"Okay," Cia said, "Oh, and Rayne asked me to give you this," while tossing a scroll in Erin's direction, interrupting her thoughts. Erin swiftly caught it, her curiosity piqued.
Looking at the scroll, Erin inquired, "What's this?" as she unfurled it, revealing a series of exercises with detailed descriptions.
"He wrote it. He said it will help you improve your Qi control and flow throughout your body," Cia explained.
Upon hearing this, Erin nodded. Having mastered the first stage of the sword technique she had been learning, she finally had a solid foundation to progress to the next level. However, to do so, she needed a higher mastery of Qi, which she currently lacked because she didn't know anything about it. This realization brought her sword technique training to a temporary halt. She had expressed her eagerness to learn about Qi a few days ago, which led Rayne to introduce her to Cia. While Erin initially felt a twinge of jealousy upon seeing another girl by Rayne's side, she soon realized that Cia harbored no romantic feelings towards him. Rayne, on the other hand, spent most of his time in the temple's lab, engrossed in his own pursuits. Together, Erin and Cia sparred, with Rayne occasionally visiting to unlock their Qi and offer guidance on utilizing it effectively in combat.
Letting out a sigh, Erin made her way toward a metallic column situated near the temple. It displayed blue glowing lines and was veiled in mist at its base. It seemed to be a recent creation of Rayne's, and Erin could only speculate about its purpose. She stared at it intently before turning to Cia and expressing her doubts, "Are you sure this is safe?"
Cia hesitated in her response, "Yeah, even though it's only a prototype, I suppose it should be safe. At least, that's what Rayne said."
Erin sighed heavily, then reached out and touched the column, following Rayne's instructions to imagine her dorm room at the Pure base. In the next moment, enveloped in a white glow, she vanished from the temple, only to reappear safely in her room.
Seeing her disappear, Cia took a deep breath, closing her eyes for a brief moment as if thinking about something, before standing up and dusting off her skirt. She looked at the night sky, which looked beautiful with its vibrant stars. It had been more than 6 hours, and Rayne still hadn't woken up from his meditation trance. As for what was happening, it all started after she told Rayne a few days ago how she was able to sense something bad was going to happen during their portal outing. She dismissed it as just a gut feeling, but it later became true when she fell down into the cavern and had a vision. The vision showed her past, present, and a future where she saw herself lying in a pool of her own blood. It horrified her, and the same thing happened later on, but she was ultimately saved by Rayne when he gave her his blood. Soon after, Rayne introduced her to Erin, telling her that he would be teaching them about Qi. On that day, he had handed both of them a pill and asked them to swallow it whole without throwing up. The pill was dark-colored with a weird medicinal smell, and its taste was horrible. Despite wanting to throw it up, she swallowed it like Erin did. As soon as she swallowed it, she felt a warm sensation spreading throughout her body. She immediately started meditating and was able to sense her life force energy circulating throughout her body almost immediately. She observed it until the flow started to lessen as the effect of the pill wore off, but she didn't stop there. She gathered a little bit of Qi and started moving it around her body, imitating the previous flow. Then, she gathered more Qi from her reserves, making the flow more vigorous. She kept adding more until she felt an internal pressure build up, at which point she stopped the flow and let it return to its natural state. She slowly opened her eyes and saw Rayne sitting beside Erin with his palm on her back, helping her with Qi circulation. It confused her because it felt like a second nature to her. At that moment, she noticed Rayne turning to her, grinning like a madman, which sent a shiver down her spine, but she shook it off as one of his eccentric behavior. They continued to improve their Qi control and connection through sparring, while Rayne spent most of his time in the temple's lab. However, that wasn't the only thing he was doing. He also visited the red planet Elysia, where Arthur now resided, to watch over the village and collect some herbs.
Finally, Cia broke out of her internal musings as she heard rustling and saw a monkey jumping out of the foliage. She sighed in relief before remembering what Rayne had told her about her prediction ability. "Whatever happens, don't let your emotions get the best of you when you have a vision. Always think rationally because it can often be actions influenced by your emotions that lead to the said outcome. Always control and interpret visions without being overwhelmed or misled by your emotions."
She shook off the unease she felt and looked in Rayne's direction, seeing him still meditating. Not having much to do, Cia decided to pay a visit to the chamber located under the temple. She was already adept at wielding her Qi effectively, and her control was extraordinary. She didn't want to train with the blood aura because she still was a noob in it.
As she made her way inside the temple, she noticed that it had transformed completely. The previously rugged and roughed-up state was gone. It had been repaired by a single spell from Rayne, and now it looked pristine and beautiful both from the outside and inside, with crystal torches lighting up the interior. She walked inside and stood upon a circular magic pattern, inputting some of her Qi into it to activate it and teleport herself straight to the underground lab.
She looked around, taking in her surroundings. The chamber or lab had also undergone significant changes. It now had a modernized touch, with the wooden desk, scrolls, and library books all repaired to their prime condition. As she moved through the library, eyeing the scrolls and books and occasionally taking one out to read, her curiosity piqued. It was her first time there, so she looked around curiously until her eyes finally landed on a blueprint lying on the workshop table. She stared at it intently, trying to decipher its contents—a huge circular ring-like structure that looked like a portal with various notes written in an unknown language (the Eldritch language used by elder gods).
Lost in her examination, she suddenly felt a breath on her neck and heard a voice, causing her to scream like a banshee. Rayne, covering his ears, yelled, "Stop!" Her scream subsided, as she calmed down.
"So, where is Erin?" Rayne asked.
"She went back," Cia said.
"Hmm, then let's return."
"Okay."
Rayne grabbed her, activating his teleportation skill, and they appeared back inside her dorm room.
"Don't look at her," Cia whispered, obstructing Rayne from looking at Layla's sleeping form, resembling a particularly creepy shiny vampire.
Rayne sighed resignedly before saying, "I am not like that. I am just examining her body," which was true because he was genuinely examining her with his dragon eye skill, determining her aura and Qi level. He then teleported out of her room and returned to his own, falling asleep mentally exhausted after meditating for so long. He stored away his uniform in his inventory, which happened to be his sentient living armor.
The next day, early in the morning, Rayne could be seen doing push-ups.
"98, 99, 100!" Rayne said, letting out a huge breath before going through some yoga stretching poses. He then lay on the ground, relaxing his body, before heading to the shower for a normal one. Afterward, he grabbed his packed bag and departed from his dorm room, making his way to the homeroom to meet up with the rest of the students and their homeroom teacher for the inter-military base tournament.
Once all the students had packed their belongings, they followed their homeroom teacher outside in front of the school gates. The students lined up in a single file, with their homeroom teacher at the front. On the right side of the entrance were the first-year students, and in front of them stood General Nathan. On the left side, in front of the gate, were all the second-year students, with General Duke in front of them. The sergeants stood beside both generals.
Standing in the center of the two groups was General Mike, who would lead the students during the event. He had the ultimate say in matters. Paul, the Head General, would stay behind, like the other Head Generals, to remain at the base with the other soldiers in case of an attack. It was essential to have someone in charge who was strong enough to defend the base.
"Alright!" Mike yelled in a loud, booming voice. Somehow, his voice carried outside and could be heard by everyone in the crowd. "Your teachers will now call out the names of the students who will be participating in the events. Please come up to the front when your name is called."
"Everyone else, remember, you are here to support these people. Cheer at the top of your lungs!" Mike shouted, banging his chest.
There was silence among the students.
"I said cheer!" Mike yelled again, and the students responded, shouting back.
First, all the second-year students participating in the events were called up. Since the event was similar to the old Olympics, there were a lot of events to go through, some even banning the use of abilities.
After all the students for the regular events were called up, students for the three primary events were called. One student from each homeroom group would be selected for the main events. Ten second-year students were chosen to participate in the fighting tournament.
Next, it was time for the first-year students. Three students from each class were selected for the three events and walked up to the front.
Finally, it was Del's class's turn. The students for the crafting event were called up first, followed by the others.
"For the Ranged event, Layla Munrow," the teacher announced.
Rayne looked in Layla's direction, surprised that she had been chosen for the competition. He shook his head, getting lost in his own dreamland, devising potential uses for the nest crystal he had been working on. He didn't even hear that Vorden had been replaced by Peter Chuck in the fighting tournament until Peter's name was called. He looked in Peter's direction and felt something, dark emotions. After deepening his connection with Qi after the meditation he had done the day before. He had been trying to connect with the mana in the surrounding area, especially his Qi, which helped him develop a skill called "Qi sense." As he looked at Peter, he sensed an emotionless void, but beneath it, there was hatred, anger, and frustration, all directed towards one individual: Duke. When he looked at Duke's face, he felt greed, amusement, and lust.
At that moment, he realized something. "Holy shit, don't tell me my eyes are active!" He looked around himself, trying to see if anyone was looking at him strangely, but no one seemed to be. Not feeling satisfied, he took out a mirror from his bag and looked at himself. His eyes weren't active at that moment. Then, he realized something else. Unlike his dragon eyes, which required understanding aura fluctuations to determine emotions, what he felt was the raw, respective emotions of others.
"Did I learn an empathy ability?" Rayne wondered. But all of his thoughts were interrupted when he heard his system speak. [No, what you used is the most basic level of Qi sense. Unlike your dragon eyes, which are also a type of Qi sense, that your body created by utilizing the pseudo-draconic life force energy you consumed from that Dalki and your blood aura, allowing you to see the aura of other creatures. What Qi sense does is it allows you to sense the emotions of others, predict an attack, and sense danger, similar to a spider sense, and to some extreme cases even peer into or sense an impending doom that will happen in future.]
After having a brief conversation with his system about this new Qi skill, he followed the rest of the students as they followed the general to the hangar, where they kept mechs and other equipment. He looked around, trying to spot Quinn, Logan, or Fex, but couldn't find them in the crowd.
Suddenly, Mike shouted, "Attention!" The students stopped and saluted. Gas masks were instantly placed over their faces, and the soldiers, including the sergeants and staff, did the same. Gas started filling the room, causing panic among some students while a few remained calm.
One by one, the students around him started to collapse. Rayne spotted Quinn in the crowd, who was still standing before he too fell to the ground, though he was obviously faking it. Rayne could hear his heart beating quickly but didn't want to draw too much attention, so he also imitated falling unconscious as well.
