Capítulo 5: Descendant

Alice Sinclair stared at her reflection in the mirror. Her bright blue eyes shone, framed by her golden hair that curled elegantly around her soft features. This would be her first big adventure, and she had no idea what she was getting into.

She sighed, leaning down towards the dresser and scooping up her brush. She brushed through her silky strands, trying to calm her nerves. She was nervous, unsure of how to handle herself in such a dangerous situation, yet couldn't be more excited. She had always dreamt of escaping her noble life and going out into the wild to do something worthwhile. She felt like a bird in a golden cage here.

As the only child, it had always been her job to carry on the family legacy. A legacy that was almost impossible to eclipse. Her great-grandfather was the mighty hero who had defeated the evil Demon, Jasmine, all those years back, after all. How was she ever supposed to measure up to such a feat?

Just thinking about him, her heart sank to the bottom of her chest. She wanted to make a lasting impression and have a statue built alongside him when she eventually passed away. Unfortunately, that seemed extremely unlikely, especially if she stayed cooped up inside a giant palace.

A knock came from the door, making her jump slightly in surprise.

"Come in!" Alice called.

It was her maid, Jane, who entered carrying a tray of steaming coffee and a fresh loaf of bread. "Good morning, Alice. It seems as though you haven't eaten your breakfast yet?"

Alice couldn't help but let out another sigh as she glanced down at the food. "No, thank you. Just isn't the time yet."

Jane frowned, looking away and setting the food down at Alice's bedside. "You need to eat, Alice. It's already noon, and you haven't done anything else except change clothes since this morning."

"Don't remind me," Alice responded, placing her brush down with a huff. "I need my sword."

"Listen, Alice," Jane said with concern. "I understand how you feel. You don't want to become a business owner like your parents want you too. You want to follow in his footsteps and make a difference. But you can't do that without being alive, and eating is important."

"Sorry," she mumbled, casting her eyes to the floor. She knew better than to argue with her. Her parents had abandoned their ancestor's legacy and instead became wealthy merchants. They weren't fighters and rarely even used their own power for anything beyond intimidation.

"Here. At least sit and drink some tea." Jane poured out a cup of tea, steam rising from the liquid, and handed her the cup. "Now, eat a piece of this bread. I got this recipe from the castle chef's family, and I've been wanting to try it myself. I tried a little piece of it, and it tastes so good! You'll love it! "

Alice sniffed. She took a sip. It really was delicious, especially considering how hard-boiled Jane was. Most other noblewomen had trouble saying their true feelings, and it must've been very uncomfortable having to spend so much time living with a bunch of men.

After swallowing her bite, Alice wiped her mouth, satisfied, and reached over to pour some milk onto her saucer, as was proper etiquette. She didn't care much about etiquette, but if Jane cared, then she'd follow her lead.

"Much obliged, Jane."

"Glad I was able to get you to eat something," Jane giggled, wiping her hands on her apron. "Don't be too worried about it, Alice. You're only 21. Life isn't a race. Even though I'll reach 40 next year, I still feel as young as I was ten years ago, because I haven't wasted any time. You're beautiful, and you're strong, just remember that."

With that, Jane turned and left, leaving a confused Alice standing by her table. Her maid was the only one in the castle who had actually talked to her face-to-face since childhood. With no real friends growing up, she had spent the majority of her youth surrounded by the castle guards and the occasional visiting dignitaries who stopped in.

Another sigh escaped her lips. Sure, life wasn't a race, but at this pace, she wouldn't ever reach the same greatness that her great-grandfather had. Sure, she was talented at swordplay and boasted incredible strength, but she hadn't learned to use any magical powers yet. To be honest, she had absolutely no clue how magic actually worked, nor had she practiced. She had only had a sword instructor.

Finishing her meal, Alice decided it was finally time to prepare her things.

She chose a new pair of leather boots, a lovely white blouse, and a blue skirt. Golden trim ran the length of each article of clothing. She packed all her belongings inside her trunk, then grabbed her scabbard and unsheathed her blade.

Her sword was beautiful. The one and only Excalibur, the same weapon the hero had used.

The steel hilt, encrusted with a stunning jewel, sparkled with her reflection on the polished surface. The blade itself was razor-sharp and glinted menacingly. She held it high above her head and slashed across, slicing through the air like butter.

She tested the balance, swung again, twirled, and struck. The balance was good.

Leaving her enormous bedroom, Alice closed the heavy oak doors behind her, taking one final look inside the space.

"Maybe it will all go better than expected," she thought.

With her spirits lifted, she dashed out of the room, her feet pounding along the marble floors.

Although she wished her parents would see her off, it was finally time to head out. Athainia was her first destination.
