18 years later
"Sam you can't do this man! Leaving to college!? Leaving me and Dad!? Abandoning us!? It's crazy!" Dean yelled at his younger brother.
'It really isn't if you knew what I know Dean.' Sam thought to himself. It's been 18 years since that fateful day that changed everything. Since he remembered.
That day Sam remembered his previous life and with it the knowledge of this world. Though the peculiar thing is, whatever brought him into this world put some extra information into his head.
It corrected something things from the show. Such as for example the Darkness being God's sister, Death being able to reap God and that God is evil, all these things were in fact not true.
He also got to know that he didn't replace the soul that was supposed to be Sam Winchester, in fact, in this universe, his soul was supposed to be Sam Winchester. He is quite thankful for this particular piece of information because he doesn't need to feel guilty for taking some else's life.
"Dean, it's my choice man, you got to understand, this, all this, this can't be how I spend my life." Sam said.
"This? What do you mean by this Sam? Us? Dad and me? You can't have us in your life is that it." Dean said with a sneer.
"You know that's not what I meant Dean. Don't put words in my mouth. You know I never lie." Which in fact was true. Sam never lied. That was a particular character trait that John liked and disliked at the same time for different reasons.
He liked it because it meant he could always trust the words out of his son's mouth when completely opaque, but also meant it made hunting quite difficult, because Sam simply wouldn't lie and stay silent for the most part until he could state the truth and yet have the other person themselves fill in the gaps.
In this way, he got what he wanted, he didn't lie, the person simply deceived themselves.
"Then what do you mean Sam!? Say it clearly! No word play! Say exactly what you mean!" Dean yelled in rage and sorrow.
"What I mean is that there are better ways to go about this! This can't be our lives forever Dean! And I am determined to make a better life for myself possible!" Sam yelled, he as well starting to get heated.
"Sam, son, explain to me why you are doing this." John ordered, entering the conversation for the first time since Sam told them about his plan to go to college. John himself was different than his canon counterpart. In canon Sam always questioned John, contradicted his commands and basically made things far more difficult for his father causing their relationship to always be in a state of near confrontation.
In this universe though, that is not the case. Though Sam isn't like Dean who obeys without question, he because of his knowledge of the show and previous life experience understood John's situation and that he was doing the best he could.
John knowing his son being very intelligent, and a very good hunter who never shied away from anything that would make him better at hunting wanted to know what his son was thinking by doing this particular course of action.
"Father," Sam began, he never could quite call John dad. Sam acknowledged John as his father, and gave him the due respect and love a son should have for his father, but because of his love for his previous life's parents he never could quite call him with as much familiarity and connection as his previous life's dad.
John himself trying to distance himself from his sons to make them more independent from him and dependant on each other because of his own research and theories about that night made this not something problematic or difficult.
"I have my reasons for what I am doing father, reasons that I... That I sadly can not share with you right now." Answered Sam, looking his father directly in the eye with determination.
"Does it have to do with that night?" Questioned John.
"I know you remember that day Sam, you yourself told me, about how you could remember everything since you were a mere infant." Stated John, though with a hint of sorrow in his tone. It was both a blessing and a curse in his eyes for his son to have such a good memory.
It was useful because he learned a year ago that the demon came into their home because of a deal his wife made and that it had plans for Sam.
Though unknown to John, Sam omitted some details with some wordplay, the fact that the demon dripped demon blood in his mouth being one of them.
"Yes sir, it does."
"Care to share son?" John asked with a raised eyebrow.
At this, Sam sighed and began stating, "The demon as we all know seems to have plans for me. The exact details of the plan is unknown," Which it was, Sam may know the endgame, but he doesn't know all that went into it, "The basic premise we can assume with the knowledge known to us three is that it has some plan to make me go darkside or something.
So how I see it is this, I'll remove myself from the board for some time. The demon has went into hiding after all and from the things we all three know, there isn't much to go on. So-"
"You're planning to make yourself bait..." Uttered John as he seemed to get Sam's thought process.
"Have you gone off the deep end Sam! Seriously!? Bait!?" Dean yelled as he also understood.
"Don't interrupt me, let me finish." Stated Sam with a raised finger towards Dean. Sam hated being interrupted.
"I will take the necessary precautions. We've been hunting this thing for years now and nothing seems to work, the only way we'll ever get it is if we lure it towards us. We know that mother was a hunter remember?
And yet still it was planning to keep her alive before she... Before she interrupted whatever he came to do.
And then it still allowed father to become a hunter, because we know it could erase memories, and from the lore we read on demons, manipulating memories isn't impossible for them.
It could have easily made us docile, made father live out some apple pie life and then come after me when I was the age necessary for whatever it wanted, but it didn't.
This means that for whatever reason it wants us to be in this life, in the life of hunting of the supernatural.
It stated that day that it enjoyed seeing me angry, hateful and that it was useful for whatever plans it has, which stands to reason, if I interfered with these plans of it by getting out of the life, it will try and approach me, trying to get me back in, which will be our perfect chance to strike!" Sam explained.
"Oh that's just great Sammy, let's just put you there in the open alone, unprotected by your family, ready for it to reap, just fantastic! Don't you see how insane this plan is!?" Dean said.
John though, he looked contemplative, which both boys noticed, "Come on dad, you can't seriously be entertaining this insane plan?" Dean questioned with a tone with both rage and horror traced in it.
"As much as I hate to say it Dean, Sam's plan does have some merit. It-"
"The hell it does! I am not letting my baby brother be out there as monster bait, have you gone insane too dad!?"
"Mind your words boy! Don't you dare talk to me that way!" John yelled back, angered by the blatant show of disrespect.
As Dean became silent by this, though no less angry, John continued, "As I was saying, the plan does have some merit because whether we acknowledge it or not, your brother Dean is a better hunter than both of us. Even though he's younger, his combat capability, supernatural knowledge, and body stature make him a force to be reckoned with, and as you very well know Dean, we three are each others prime weakness.
But Sam, even if you do draw the demon out, what do you expect us to do?"
Sam was silent for a little while as he suddenly started to walk around the place and check some things and then nodded to himself as he then turned back towards us stating, "Just wanted to check once more if we were truly alone, because what I'm going to say now must never leave this room, must not even be uttered or thought about unless necessary.
I don't know if you've heard of it, but back in 1835 they say Samuel Colt made a gun... a special gun. He made it for a hunter - a man like us, only on horseback. The story goes he made 13 bullets. This hunter used the gun a half dozen times before he disappeared, the gun along with him. Somehow, a hunter, more specifically a vampire hunter called Daniel got his hands on it. They say - they say this gun can kill anything..."
"Anything, like, supernatural anything?" Asks Dean suddenly in wonder, causing Sam to nod and John feel a sense of excitement he hasn't felt in years.
"You guys will stay hunting, I will give the illusion that I'm trying to have a life for myself outside of hunting, drawing the demon out of whatever hole its hidden itself in and you guys then, and only then when we're sure it's back will get that gun." Sam explained, omitting that he's been researching how to recreate the Colt himself and already knows the bullet creation process.
Reason being, he doesn't want the same problem happening as in the show where the demon went after innocents till the canon Winchesters gave up the gun.
Dean hearing this sighed causing both his father's and younger brother's gazes turn to him because the only opposition currently to the plan is him and for it to work smoothly all three must be on board.
"I still hate you putting yourself into danger Sammy, but... But, damn it, do you make sense. Though, you better take care of yourself and if you notice anything and I mean anything you better call, you hear me?"
"Loud and clear Dean," answered Sam with a smile, causing John giving both boys a warm gaze unnoticed by them, because finally there was hope, hope that this nightmare was going to end soon.
