*Adam Kane POV*
"...Nice to meet you."
Ajax's voice was barely a whisper as he looked down at the ground when confronted by my father.
My father reached out to pat him on his shoulder but as he raised his hand Ajax winced in anticipation.
I frowned upon seeing this, usually he would try to act impassive or apathetic, for him to be so reactive was strange.
My father only gave a sad smile as he lowered his hand before saying.
"If there's anything, and I mean anything you ever need help with, please don't hesitate to ask. The favor we owe to you is great."
"Thank you."
Ajax agreed but something gave me a feeling that he wouldn't be calling that favor in any time soon.
While the atmosphere grew slightly awkward, Corin changed the topic once again.
"I think its best if we let the two get some rest, we'll talk about the details of all this later."
Truth was yesterday, was the most rest I'd gotten in weeks, but I wasn't going to say no to that offer.
"There should be cabins prepared for you both, if you'd like you can go there now, someone should be able to guide you there."
Ajax responded with a nod before leaving promptly, he hadn't seemed at ease ever since he'd stepped foot in this place, leaving him alone for some time would be the best.
"He's a bit of a strange one." My father said as he looked at the door he'd just left from.
"Do we know anything about him?" Emma asked Corin.
"No. You'd think with the unique appearance and odd name, finding information on him would be easy but I've not been able to find a single record of his existence."
"Did you check international records?" My father asked.
Corin nodded "Still I couldn't find an exact match, no one like him does or has ever existed in any of our allied nations."
I didn't like where the conversation was going, I felt immense gratitude for what he had done for me and while background checks were necessary, speculation wasn't.
"What matters is what happens to him now, not where he came from." I stopped any theories from being thrown around.
I understand it may seem a bit naive, what if he was from a shady background or even associated with the corrupted?
However, that made no sense. If the corrupted wanted to infiltrate our ranks why would they send a suspicious nobody to the place they had just destroyed.
Also, not to brag, but saving my life was the worst possible decision for any corrupted to make, as I was the strongest current active hero.
The others understood this, and I gave my suggestion.
"He's an awakened, dual attribute enhancer with great inherent agility, I think it makes the most sense to send him to the academy."
However, hearing this, the rest of them grew silent for a while.
"Adam, the academy exams are over." My mother said.
"What?" I looked around at everybody to ask for confirmation and all of them nodded.
"They didn't delay it because of the attack? Some of the teachers were even called to the frontlines!"
I remembered the martial arts instructor; Kaoru being sent to the western front.
"The headmaster said that the exams should continue as a sign of protest, refusing to bow to the corrupted."
That was the stupidest fucking thing I've ever heard, what about those whose families and livelihoods were affected?
Then again it did sound like something that idiotic headmaster would do.
I was angry but what could I really do? Besides there was a more important thing to ask.
"How did it go?" I asked Emma.
"What do you think? Of course, I crushed it. I'll be in the top 5 for sure." She said with a smirk.
"Arrogant brat." I said jokingly, knowing she was probably right.
I sighed as I remembered that I had told Ajax that he could probably still go to the academy.
"The least we can do for him is get him registered as an awakened and find him a place to live, what happens after that is his choice."
My father said seeing my disappointment.
"I'll get that started tomorrow, for now you should all focus on recovery and preparation, the media is going to go crazy once they find out he's alive."
She was right, I could already imagine the headache, but at least it would boost the morale of the civilians after such a loss.
I left with my family, leaving Corin to her work, technically I was the general and she was doing my job, but I never really liked that job in the first place.
"Do you still have business with that boy or are you ready to come home?" My father asked.
I thought for a while before deciding to stay, I wanted to do something to help Ajax before I went back to my normal life.
I had an idea, but I had to get the approval of my parents first and shared my idea with them.
"The rest I agree with but are you sure about that part? Are you sure the boy wants to be a warrior in the first place?" My father asked.
"Yes, I'm sure."
You don't practice dagger swings and mana control for fun, something told me he fully intended to use the powers for combat.
"Alright, I don't have any problems with it, we can get it here by tomorrow morning." He confirmed.
"I think it's very sweet of you to go so far for this boy." My mother said as she pat me on the head.
As they were about to leave to prepare for my return, Emma approached me.
"If you're doing this, you must think that he has the potential to be one of the strongest heroes in the future."
"Why, you jealous?" I said with a smirk.
"No! You know what, never mind." she sighed.
I thought about it for a bit, analyzing potential of somebody who just awakened was hard, but I had learnt to trust my intuition.
"I don't know if he's a monster like you, but I do think helping him will help us in the future."
She nodded, satisfied with the response before leaving with my parents for Copperfront.
I felt slightly bitter watching them leave, but I would be joining them soon and besides, I had a debt to repay.
Commment what you think about the story, I've cut down a lot from drafts and original to try and speed everything up.
