The hospital doors crash open as Jules rushed through the rather, clean, and shiny halls. Every footstep he made echoed through the halls clacking with the occasional squeak in his quick pace. Soon after, another set of feet followed him. Charles, behind Jules spoke to him trying to make him a bit calmer, "Jules, you need to calm down and think this out," his voice was young but rough. a soothing hum yet had a sort of dominance to the situation. Clearly the more adult person to the problem they have ahead of them. He continued, "You had no idea her water was gonna' break this early in. Also, Aleena's tough. She doesn't really need you by her side to give birth."
Jules' brown quills flutter and sharpen up in a shiver of fear, as he responds to Charles,
"She's giving birth two months early! I should've been here with her, Chuck. Not celebrating a dumb holiday!" His voice was even younger than Charles'. A faint amount of grime and growl hummed through his vowels giving a somewhat snarky type of tone.
They continued to walk. Jules' pace picked up a bit more while Charles slowed a bit, unsure of what he had said even helped Jules calm down. "One, she's seven and a half months in... She's not two months early. Granted, it's still early. Two, she told you to go and have fun, she knows you've always enjoyed Comet Day, and she didn't want to be the cause of you missing it".
Charles gave a heavy sigh, thinking Jules might still have a buzz from the party. Jules heard his attempt at giving reassuring words and failed to connect with him. Jules shifted his B-line, a one-eighty, and got in Charles' face and blubber his words leaving a boozy stench to linger in Charles' nostrils, "Are you implying that it's her fault I'm not here when I should have been?"
Charles sky blue fur coiled out in a shiver of disgust from his hot, drunk breath, "Ugh.. Of course, I'm not blaming her or you.. Or anyone! It's just...", Charles staggered back and struggled to capture the right words. "...a-a-...A horrible... Set of circumstances".
Jules quickly growled a raging snarl and turned looking away from Charles as he tried to avert the anger caused by this set of circumstances. Charles could quickly see through his brother's emotions. Jules hated that he was not with his soon-to-be wife, and desperately wanted to blame someone or something for his lack of being a proper fiancé.
After a quick moment of silence, Charles' attempts of being the older brother sort of backfired. Maybe Jules should blame himself, for the sake of making things easier for everyone. Charles shook the thought away, knowing the easy route is usually never the best route.
A fox nurse walked past them. Jules gripped her arm and demanded from her, "Were you just in Aleena Carta's room??" The woman gasped to Jules' desperation and tugged her arm away. She nodded and began to speak until Jules quickly interrupts her. All he cared about was that. If she was going to nod or not, "Take us to her room, please! I'm her fiancé..."
The fox did not need to hear much other than that. She nodded back and jogged her way to the somewhat vacant halls. Jules stumbled at first, but caught up, along with Charles.
Charles quickly thought of how to help properly this time. He couldn't have his younger brother or his girl feel guilty over the birth of their child. That could easily cause a lot of problems. Charles preferred to think out the worst possible outcomes. Not to always worry, but to see how to avoid those outcomes, he realized at this point Jules' emotions and opinion on this situation couldn't exactly change at the moment, so it all depended on Aleena and the child.
All three approached a door leading to the room Aleena was in. Jules quickly nods and thanked the nurse as she headed back to wherever she was heading. Jules turned back to the door, looked at the handle, and reached over to it, but halted his motion to the handle. His hand shook. It shook more than ever. His breathing was staggering, he could hear his heart hum and pump through his ears. Even from Charles' perspective, it was clear to see how scared and anxious Jules was. Jules turned to look at Charles. A look only a brother could understand. At that moment, whatever alcohol was left in Jules' system had sweated away. Sobered him at the last minute. He shook and was almost whimpering, unsure if he could even open the door.
The look Jules had given to Charles was enough for him to know. Now, it's time to be a big brother. Charles calmly placed his hand onto Jules and spoke even more calmly, with a faint whisper to make sure Aleena would not hear him from the other side of the door, "Listen, whether you're scared, angry, sad, or ashamed. It doesn't matter, now. That mother is waiting for the father to come through this door, and hold her, and their child," Charles then pointed at the door as he spoke. His words left his mouth at a slower pace to let it all sink in for Jules, "What you need to do is open this door and be there for them, because it's no longer about you anymore. It's about that child, and what that kid will be in the future."
Jules was shivering less. The words began to circle his mind, as Charles began to lend some motivation, "I have, absolutely no doubt that you can take care of them, but it's your choice... Not mine, not Aleena's, not even the kid's choice. You need to make the first step."
Exactly what a younger brother needed to hear. Jules had no longer felt any struggle or fear in this pressing matter. He nodded to Charles. He knew it was no longer about him and that it's time to grow up and man up, for the ones he was going to love for the rest of his life.
"So.." Charles said confidently, "You gonna open that door?"
Jules' hand gripped the doorknob, twisted and pulled, opening the door. He took a step in and even though his fears and worries were gone, a rush of emotions drowned over him, as he saw his soon to be, wife. She leaned up onto the folded hospital bed. Her blue beautiful body, warned out by the harsh labor she had gone through. An exhausted and adorable smile curled up, as she saw her already, emotionally broken lover.
Jules' eyes were not looking at her, however. His gaze was upon what she was holding. A dark, dark blue, child. Cradled in her arms. His tan chubby legs twitched and shook as the youngling rested, adoring the warmth of his mother.
Jules stumbled over, tried to keep himself awake. He lowered himself to his knees next to the bed. Charles rested at the door as he watched the lovely scene unfold.
Jules spoke softly always seeming to be seconds away from crying with joy, "I'm so sorry, I'm late. If I knew this was goi-"
Aleena's weak and staggered voice interrupted his, "But you didn't know... It's ok, Juley. It just happened."
Jules emerald green eyes finally let out the tears he was holding in. Instead of feeling sorry for himself, he had a genuine smile as he cried, silently, "Was it hard? Any struggle?" Jules asked faintly.
Aleena smiles and shakes her head slowly, "There was a small problem at the end, but overall, he's a healthy and excited boy. The doctor said, he was so eager to leave, he was practically running."
They both exhaled a faint laugh, as Jules held her hand and leaned over her to study his child. The blue boy's eyes were closed and were clearly shaking away a dream with his legs. Jules whispered to her, "What was the problem?"
"He was kicking so much, that my hip got displaced, and needs realignment. They're going to put me under in a half hour. Will you watch him while they do that?"
Jules nodded and kissed her forehead, "I promise Alee.. I'll be by this troublemaker's side for the rest of my life."
Her smiles grew more, and she chuckled faintly before she winced at the pain of her hip. She then saw Charles at the door, and glares over to him with a smile, "And you watch over both of them while I am unable to, ok?"
Charles gave a nod, as he spoke, "You have my word."
Jules looked over, and smiled ever so brightly to Charles as he spoke, "Uncle Chuck has no idea, how amazing he already is to Allen."
There was a moment of silence to sink in the brotherly love to which, Aleena interrupted proudly, "No way, is his name gonna be Allen," A tired smirk showed, as Aleena studied her child in her arm as she then continued, "Yeah, he's too cute to be an Allen... Also too enthusiastic."
"That's our dad's name!" Charles scoffed, feeling a tiny bit insulted, but laughed it over.
Aleena responded, assuringly, "I'm aware.."
The blue child was so eager to get out of her, that before, she heard one of the doctors admit that, this was the fastest delivery the hospital has ever had. It was so quick. So fast.
It was clear what his name should be...
