Julian Had lost a lot of weight upon his new inspired journey. These gems had taken years away from his life, yet he had never felt more alive. Climbing mountains, journeying farther than he had ever gone before. Going to one side of the planet, then to the other to find such large yet simple gems. Snively always by his side, knowing the information needed and having the appropriate forms and papers to be allowed to travel in such rural, annoying areas.
At first, this adventure was lead by the sickening Snively, knowing everywhere to go and how to get there without trouble was his specialty, but he did not have muscle, nor brains. At some point, when caught in a corner, Julian made the move to take lead, making sure their lives were safe and held a firm grasp on what to get, and how to get it. Snively's a coward. A simple man, like how everyone usually is. Hopelessly weak to their own hubris. Unlike Julian. Julian was brilliant and overwhelmingly confident that he could reach the glistening glow of these beautiful yet powerful gems.
The first quest was to the closest gem to go to after leaving the college he had effortlessly abandoned. They had to leave the green gem back at the college hidden very well. A place Julian hid plenty of things that would make normal people question him as a human. Nothing lawbreaking, but still. A judgment would be passed if anyone saw what he is capable of. Either way, the green gem would never be found without knowing perfect knowledge of its whereabouts. The other gems they have found are all circulating the location of the green gem all around the town. Whether being inside a storage unit or inside a graveyard neighboring a decaying body in a box, none of the gems were too close to each other to cause significant damage to the city. No genuine chaos was caused when they had found most of them. The sixth gem, however, had given an earthquake that shook the whole state. Of course, everyone was baffled by the sudden shaking. As expected, nobody questioned it and moved on faster than the earthquakes passing.
Now as Julian traveled in the quiet yet active part of South Africa, Snively by his side. Both look exhausted and tired, yet both continued to travel. So close to the last nitpicking parts of the plan, they could practically taste the last gem somewhere around this closed in a rural village. Men and women acting so civil yet primal, here. A more honest depiction of humanity. Just simple-minded creatures, satisfying themselves and others as they occupy themselves, eating whatever they can fit over a fire. Where Julian and Snively walked was the center of the town, a food market. The people of this village had their eyes on Julian and his cowering companion. Snively did his best to ignore the folk and focus on the device Julian made. A gem locator on his hand.
Snively was still surprised that the gem locator was so compact and simple. The size and shape of a pocket watch. A circular screen with a classic soundwave radar look. Its design is to locate the vibrations from the gems as well as the energy it exudes from itself. Snively nearly worshipped Julian after making such a simple tool. whenever he got scared during their adventures, he would stare down on the locator like it was his damn thumb to suckle onto.
"How close are we?" Julian spoke as he wiped the grease off of his mustache, which had grown a bit too long for his comfort.
Snively glanced over to Julian and studied the locator as if he was just now reading it, "We should be near it. Fifty-two feet ahead of us, in fact," his head tilted in confusion. The radar had never said that a gem was ahead. Usually said the gem would be beneath them.
Julian turned to look at the locator's radar. The coordinates were right. It should be straight ahead of them. He looked straight ahead of him. His surprised look melted into a grim stare of anger. The emerald was right there, resting upon a poorly made shrine made of clay, soil, and sheet metal. Crude and simple. The gem was inside of a shrine that these idiots made for it. "Well, this complicates things," Julian spoke in a hushed growl.
Snively gave a bit of a chuckle of disbelief as he took a few steps closer, "I mean, does it?" he said with a simple reach before Julian tugged him back away from the shrine.
"We can't be certain, idiot," Julian looked around. The townsfolk's eyes were fixated on them as they continued whatever they did. "Circle the place, Snively. See if there are any guards here. Anyone wearing an outfit just like another, or anyone with an automatic gun."
Snively gave a nod and started walking around the crowds. Julian tried to ease the tension of the folk, simply pulled out his smartphone and started taking pictures of the gem, trying to make himself look like a tourist. Some of the folk gave an exasperated sigh before they started ignoring the genius at work. The feeling of tensed eyes had left him. His eyes then peered around without turning his head. Nobody was looking at him anymore, as expected. He walked away from the shrine and started peering around on the ground, looking for a well-sized and well-colored rock at the rubble of a small building that was seemingly being torn down. He grabbed the rock he was needing as Snively had finally found him.
"There you are! There aren't any guards, nor are there anyone with guns nearby," he said in between his panting. He had his hands on his knees as he steadily caught his breath.
Julian took a look at his partner in crime and gave a tilt to his head in confusion, "What on earth are you panting for, then?" He said firmly, as he looked down at Snively, "I was not that far away from the shrine."
"I surveyed the area as fast as I possibly could, so things could go by more smoothly. I know you, Julian," Snively spoke before he snickered, "You love to be so impatient."
Julian gave a rather, unamused glare at Snively. He was not wrong, though. Julian loved it when things progress at a faster pace than usual. Julian started to walk back to the shrine. One foot after the other. he retraced his steps as he then saw the shrine once more. He faced the back end of it. Julian circled to the front as Snively followed quietly.
"Snively?", Julian spoke softly.
"Y-Yes?"
"Extend the sides of your jacket with your arms..." Julian was standing there, patiently as he waited for Snively to say that he has done as asked.
Snively tilted his head slightly but slowly did as demanded. He slipped his hands into the pockets of his jacket and slowly extended his arms to the sides of his body whilst he kept his hands in his pocket, blocking the view of any suspicious eyes, "Ok, Julian."
Swiftly, Julian swaps the gem for the rock and quickly starts walking off. He did not look back. He couldn't. It was too much of a risk. Snively just quickly followed. they both walked off in silence and turned to a corner. Julian and Snively look to one another. Julian gave a big thieving grin and Snively gave a quiet snickering. It was that simple! Well, of course, it was. Julian is that brilliant compared to the fools that control this village. Snively was still soaking in what had just happened. Julian just took it and nobody even cared to look.
That was when they heard the commotion from behind. Villagers ran about in a panic. spewed their tongue to others willing to listen and care.
Julian's pace had quickened. They were the only foreigners in this village today and they were being eyed at not too long ago. It was still a brilliant and easy route to take. Snively was about to look back but Julian spoke, "You look back, and they'll see us, and then this will result in a chase. Do you want to be a street rat?"
Snively looked at him and slightly shook his head, not really knowing what Julian was implying. To Snively, Julian could have implied that he was going to point at him and run away and get the treasure for himself. "...N-No I don't"
"Then just walk faster," Julian's whispered the faint British demanded. There was no point in hiding if they were going to get caught. They walked on and on. The village was vast but Julian knew where they were. He had the layout engraved into his brain since he had a feeling that this gem would have been just as difficult retrieving. He was not going to give up now with the seventh Gem at hand. He will happily sacrifice whatever just to see where this adventure was going to take him. There has been too much investment. He did not care what others would think at this point. Like he ever did. However, he had fears that Snively was going to back out at the last minute. He could not worry about that now.
Eventually, the crowds dissipated. The further they went, the less panicking faces were around. They were at the edge of the village at the south end. Julian was out of breath. It was just a fast-paced walk and yet he was exhausted. He needed to work out more often but he really couldn't ever find the time to. Frankly, he knew he was lucky he was this thin. Of all luck though, them escaping was not luck. It would never be luck with him around. Sure, this was less calculated then the other adventures he had with Snively this year, but he was satisfied to say that they survived another quest to find paradise.
Julian had pulled out his phone and unlocked his lock screen to reveal a text message that was drafted and ready to send. We're at the east end. We are ready to leave, it said. He tapped the send button and as they stood there to catch their breath, a simple red car rolled up in front of them. Snively, feeling his chest as it burned from trying to catch up with such a tall companion, he looked over to see the car and then to Julian. It was then when he realized that a significant portion of this was planned after all. How much of it was a risk, though?
They both entered the car and sat at the back. There were cupholders, both with chilled plastic bottles of water. They both grabbed one and cracked the bottle caps open before chugging half the water down, "Julian?" Snively spoke sternly.
"Hm?" Julian spoke whilst still chugging.
"How much of what just happened was part of your plan?"
Julian finished chugging and exhaled sharply as he leaned back on the fabric cushions of the back seat, "Why do you ask?... Hmm... Eighty percent of what happened was my plan. All the articles explaining this village never said if the temple was guarded or had firearms. That was the only risk having of all of this to never happen. If there were guns, we would have left and come back at a later date with a sharper strategy."
"What?! Julian, don't put that much luck on us again!" Snively barked at Julian as Julian gave him a grin.
"Luck does not exist. I shouldn't have to tell you that. Plus! We will not have to take risks anymore, once we are back," Julian said with confidence as he pulled out the gem. It shined brightly in his hands. each corner and cut sharp and precise. No human could ever make something that beautiful. The thought of a god existing shivered him to the bone. He can suffice with godsent artifacts. Who knows... Maybe these were made by someone else other than humans and that these legends are just false tales to give these gems a price.
Julian laughed to himself as the driver drove away from the village and headed to the nearest airport.
