It's summertime, and the air conditioning was blowing in the room. The butler handed a glass of iced Coke to Alex.
"Thank you," Alex said, expressing his gratitude. He set the iced Coke aside for the moment and opened the Poké Balls.
A flash of red light revealed a Pokémon resembling a small creature—Nuzleaf.
Nuzleaf's original body color is brown, but its Shiny form is lighter. Nuzleaf has a pointed nose and a light brown mask with a pointed pattern extending to the back of its head, topped with a leaf.
The main difference between Shiny Nuzleaf and a regular Nuzleaf is the color of the leaves on its head. "The leaves on a normal Nuzleaf's head are typically turquoise or emerald green. In contrast, the leaves on this Nuzleaf's head are bright red," Mrs. Weston, a senior Breeder engineer, pointed out, highlighting what makes this Shiny Nuzleaf special. Additionally, its body color is lighter—a lighter brown.
Shiny Pokémon are rare, and this Nuzleaf's talent was quite decent.

The production rate of Shiny Pokémon is typically higher. The four Shiny Pokémon Alex captured all had elite-level talents, with the highest being Shiny Nuzleaf, which reached the gym level. Its HP and dual attack values were maxed out.
If Nuzleaf became the main player of a team, it would perform well, but being the team's trump card would be challenging.
Wendy and Mrs. Weston examined the Shiny Nuzleaf closely. "Well-proportioned body," "Looks good," "The limbs are strong," Mrs. Weston noted, recognizing Nuzleaf's external talents in just a few words.
"As for its Ability, we'll need to test it to be sure."
Alex realized that, unlike him, no one else could see a Pokémon's Ability at a glance. Breeders and appraisers needed specific methods for verification.
"There are many common methods available," Mrs. Weston explained, sharing some identification knowledge. Schools would teach this, but not in depth.
"Take Nuzleaf, for instance," Mrs. Weston continued, familiar with Pokémon's abilities. Without pause, she mentioned Nuzleaf's three potential abilities: Chlorophyll, Early Bird, and the hidden ability Pickpocket.
"To determine if Nuzleaf has the Chlorophyll ability, observe if its speed increases in sunny weather," Mrs. Weston explained.
Alex quickly added his observations from when he captured Nuzleaf. It moved slowly in the shadows but sped up significantly in the sun. He had been "exhausted" at the time and took a while to catch up with Nuzleaf. He shared this casually, saving Wendy the step of testing Nuzleaf's Ability.
"That should be Chlorophyll," Mrs. Weston concluded with a smile.
Nuzleaf had always thought of Alex as its Trainer and wanted to follow him. But Alex had different plans. Rather than having Nuzleaf sit idle, he decided it would be better for it to follow Wendy and receive warmth and companionship.
"Nuzleaf," Alex said, taking Nuzleaf's hand and communicating with it. After some heart-to-heart talking, Nuzleaf accepted that Alex would no longer be its Trainer and that it would follow the kind, slender Wendy instead.
Nuzleaf wasn't sad about this. It even felt relieved, knowing it wouldn't fare well in Alex's team. Charmeleon and Riolu alone could outmatch it tenfold in talent.
"Ye~" After some encouragement, Nuzleaf agreed and became Wendy's Pokémon.
This time, everyone was happy.
Next, Alex called out Larvitar. The main purpose of this visit was to see if Mrs. Weston, as a senior Breeder master, could help solve Larvitar's development issues.
"Kira!" The quasi-god landed, and both Wendy and Mrs. Weston were immediately impressed. Quasi-gods always draw attention, especially foreign ones.
But soon, they noticed the problem.
"This Larvitar seems to have some issues, and its talent appears..." Mrs. Weston trailed off, trying to spare Larvitar's dignity.
Seeing this, Alex shared his hypothesis. Larvitar missed critical post-birth development by not breaking through the ground on its own, resulting in stunted growth and a lack of mental acuity.
Addressing Larvitar's mental issues was a major concern for Alex.
"This matter," Mrs. Weston said, frowning. It appeared to be a difficult case. After circling Larvitar twice and observing carefully, she shook her head. "I'm sorry, Alex."
Even a senior breeder couldn't help?
Alex was taken aback.
However, there's always a silver lining.
"I specialize in Pokémon breeding and am not skilled in internal development, but I can recommend a Breeder master to you," Mrs. Weston continued, instructing the butler to fetch the business card box. She found a gold-gilded business card and handed it to Alex. The card was simple, containing only a name and phone number.
Reading the name, Alex was a little surprised.
