Capítulo 6: Rest Time

Akasha appeared above the darkened skies of the Abbey. His vibrant jester clothes and opera mask a brilliant contrast to his surroundings. "And so the day passed quickly as Cade and Emily had easily packed what little they owned into rucksacks. And the Abbey despite its open doors did not recieve a single visitor, supplicant, or confessor. As such it would normally have been boring. But the events of the day left our Emily and Cade in a dark trance till nightfall.

Both of them returned to their rooms to sleep. But the night was long and rough as the numbing agent had worn off in the middle of Cade's slumber. How did he know? Hehehe. The old fashioned way."

The scene goes from Akasha to show Cade in his bed. His hair a mess as he tossed and turned.

He rolled onto his back before a hiss of pain escaped his lips and he was once again forcefully reminded to sleep on his stomach. How Cade was able to sleep despite the days events was simple. His brain had shut down all thoughts as he just thought of it as a dream and that he would eventually wake up to the Abbott beating him again.

All the while down the hallway lay Emily awake on her bed staring at the ceiling wondering about what was going to happen to her next. Her books were all she really had of personal value. Nothing was left with her when she was abandoned at the Abbey. So anything she acquired or been gifted during her time in there was precious to her. As they were all she had.

She wondered about what the future held and if they could truly trust the man called John. He had violently and suddenly trounced into their lives like a storm. And she feared that (like most storms) he would leave destruction in his wake.

The night wore on till the sun's race began to chase the shadows from the horizon. The darkened skies of yesterday were cleared away revealing a clear blue sky.

Cade and Emily could be found in the doorway to the Abbey. Cades hair was still a mess from his nightmarish sleep. While Emily bore dark circles under her eyes as she had found no sleep in her bed.

The pair waited by the Abbey door. Their figures seemed to be tensely waiting for something before the sound of wood clattering on the cobblestones could be heard. At first from afar but it was drawing slowly nearer.

Not long after the sound came the head of a dreary looking horse. It's black mane hung in it's eyes as its dark greyish green brockled skin stretched against the dense muscle beneath its surface. The horses head pulled at the wood and leather that tied it to the carriage it pulled in a defiant manner. Almost like it hated the sensation.

And aboard the carriage sitting in it's driving seat was John. His dark coat still bore little spots of blood from his activities with the Abbott but it was hardly noticable compared to the mask he wore on his face. Silver beaked with grey lenses for it's eyes set across the oiled leather surrounding his head.

"Children. I seem to have made you wait. My apologies. But I am happy to say that I found a ride for us to the nearest branch. Though poor August here hates pulling anything I will have him deal with it for your sake. Now. Hop on! We haven't got all day!" A muffled voice called out as the carriage pulled to a stop before the Abbey's doors.

Cade and Emily looked at each other and took a breath before reaching for the carriage door which eerily creaked open before either of them could touch it.

This made them quickly jump back in fear only to hear johns chuckle from up front. "Sorry! I was told the carriage was a little old. So please bear with the door. Once you're inside it should close nicely."

Cade looked at Emily and nodded and she nodded back reassuredly. Once again they reached the doorway and just as they entered, the world went black and they sunk to the floor unconscious.

Sigh "They get younger every year wouldn't you say John?" A feminine voice echoed from the carriage to which John smiled. "Indeed. But this is the only way they might survive that hellhole. Anybody over 15 always seems to die in that place. So it's better to start them young." He replied.

If one looked within the shadows of the carriage you could make out the figure of a woman. She was dressed in a standard doctor uniform. Her leather coat bore a dark green hue which only made her seem paler and older. Her hands wore gloves that reached her elbows and held a long smoking pipe. She was an older woman. Crows feet around her pale blue eyes and large Victorian nose. Her lips were thin and seemed to be drawn in a constant emotionless state. Yet her eyes stared at the children before her.

The boys hand twitched which showed he was waking up. "This will be an interesting batch." The woman whispered as she took another puff of her pipe before blowing the smoke toward the boy. A rearing cobra seemed to appear in the smoke but once it hit Cade it dispersed. A moment later Cades hand stopped twitching.

"A very interesting batch." She said. (He doesn't even show signs of poisoning in his veins. He hasn't even changed a shade. Truly remarkable.) She thought as she continued smoking.

Meanwhile...

Cade was thrown into darkness. Deep and reaching everywhere he could see. Yet if you looked on his face it was like he knew he was dreaming. And he wasn't scared. A strange insectile hum filled the air. Almost like the sound of a swarm. Yet he saw nothing. Simply darkness.

His fall began to slow as a small red glow came from below him. His eyes were drawn toward the only light he found. And as he drew closer it was like the glow dimmed. Dimmed enough to see what was making it.

It was a bug. A simple bug. One that he had seen many times. Thousands of times. A mosquito. If one was to say anything about it was odd then it would probably be it's size. If the average mosquito was the size of a thumbnail then this thing was the size of a fist.

It's four wings buzzed off and on as it drifted with Cade. It's multifaceted eyes reflected him dozens of times over as they stared at one another.

Cade watched the mosquito for a time but no matter how much time passed it didn't try to lunge at him or harm him. It simply stayed with him. And as teenage boys are his curiosity got the best of him. And he reached out for it.

The creature didn't move away but hovered above the boys hand before lightly landing. It's spindly legs tapping his palm as it circled about before squatting and staring at him. It's odd way of looking at him made Cade laugh as it was almost like having a pet. Though he had never had one before.

He had seen many children walking and playing with dogs. And even a cat every now and again. And he had longed for that. A companion.

Almost as soon as his thoughts went through his head the mosquito's glow exploded. It was lit up like the sun as it's red turned to a venomous and sickly green. But Cade didn't break eye contact with it. Not even when his eyes watered and his hands felt like they were burning away. He didn't want this creature to go.

"Don't leave me alone here." He said.

"Oh my dear child. You will never be alone." A woman's whisper echoed through the space. The Mosquito seemed to grow. First the size of a fist, then an arm, then a person, then a horse. Till it was towering above Cade. But it bore no malice. But it was majestic. It was powerful. And if you could describe it in one word of power. It was...

Pestilence.

It's very energy was engulfing, consuming and growing. Not as a greedy creature. No. But as a power. Filling in the void as it expanded almost endlessly.

"You are the first in many years to find me Cade. Karina would truly be proud. But it is not yet time for us to be here. So I will guide you back. And once you are ready you will find me again little one. Now go. I believe you have much to learn." The voice said as the mosquito looked down at him. And Cade woke up.
