The sun was shining brightly, at noon while shisui and Tobi were jumping from tree to tree at a speed that most would consider fast even by ninja standards, with both of them using shunshin, the entire journey to the border with rice country would only take a few days.
they stopped along the way twice to camp out the night and rest and by the third day, they had already arrived at the border.
Shisui stopped abruptly, noticing this then Tobi did so as well, on the other side of the small clearing they had stopped at, a few shadowy figures came out.
It was the border patrols consisting of leaf ninjas.
What could be assumed as the captain of the team went forward
Unknown Ninja Captain: "State you're purpose for coming and show your ninja identifications"
Shisui threw the mission scroll toward the ninja
Shisui: "Shisui Uchiha ninja id 0188710, here on a b rank mission"
Tobi:"Tobi Uzumaki, ninja id 0096540"
The ninja read through the scroll and did a few hand signs to check if the scroll wasn't fake and then threw it back to shisui and disappeared"
Shisui: "Because we are not allied with rice, the controls here are much stricter because the chances of an enemy infiltration are much higher"
Tobi: "I see, does that mean that such controls don't happen on the border with sand or the hot springs?"
Shisui: "They do not but it is expected to go through a control point and state your ninja id, the mission isn't needed to be specified, usually the control that just happened would be more thorough but because I'm from the Uchiha clan then my chakra is easily identifiable so it wasn't needed"
Finishing the explanation, shisui and Tobi took off with a shunshin in the direction of the last reported village said to be destroyed by the mercenaries.
About 30 minutes later, they arrived at the sight of a ruined village, no chakra could be sensed meaning that all life had been annihilated.
Shisui: "Look around for any clues and come back in 20 minutes to this location"
Tobi nodded and both took off to search around the village
1st Pov
As I stared at the sight of the village, which seemed to have been caught in a massive fire with most of the houses being charred black and collapsed, I couldn't help but think about this world as a whole.
We ninjas fight for lots of things, be that love, hatred, fame, or money, and what I'm seeing right now are just the after-effects of those battles.
The pain was caused to the mundane people, who were in most cases simply treated as livestock, to suck them dry of either their income, their working power for menial things, or their farming capabilities.
They pay us ninjas for protection giving us a tax every year but what are we protecting them from?
ourselves, we are the fear and destruction that they need protection from.
I sighed as I saw a small toy of a horse, burned and turned black by the fire.
Looking around I noticed some tracks leading forth deeper into the woods surrounding the village, ninjas wouldn't leave such tracks but the mercenaries consisted of only 1 ninja, their leader.
3rd pov
Tobi took off to the regroup location and waited for shisui after a minute or so, shisui came.
