Wiyot had gathered up with a group of the other male leaders in the pack of owls. They were Mato, a true owl, Naytai, a long-eared owl, and Karuk, a Ural owl. While Shayan was the eldest one there, he was not part of the meeting. He instead stood off in the distance, his head turned away from the four.
“It isn’t going to be as easy as you want it to be”. Karuk told Wiyot. “It isn’t as though we can walk right out of here without Henry doing something.
“Well, what is it that he can do?” Wiyot asked.
“He’s the farmer. There are a lot of things that he could do to put an end to anything that we want to make happen”.
“You cannot allow for fear to hold you back. That’s how you all got into this mess in the first place”.
“What would you know about any mess were in?” Nayati asked. “We just met you today!”
“I know this not freedom”. Wiyot said. “I know that you are all slaves”.
Wiyot walked out towards the broken planks of wood as he peeked his head out. Night had fallen across the land. Wiyot looked around and felt surrounded by a clear empty space. It was wide open and quiet. Wiyot looked around again before he went back inside the barn.
The decision had been made to go through the back right side. There was a loose plank that would not take too long to knock out. Wiyot inspected it and was able to get it out of the way. After that he led the way with the other owls in tow. Shayan however, stood there in the barn, not looking into the direction of the new opening.
“Is this what you want?” Wiyot asked.
“This is my fate”. Shayan answered. “I will not fight it”.
“How can you be so sure? What if you were meant for another path?”
“It would have been so if that were the case. Destiny has a funny way of calling us. I found mine. They are still lost. You are no different than”.
“Old age is not as honorable as death, but most want it to be”.
Wiyot walked out of the barn. Shayan stared at him as Wiyot joined the other owls on their way out. Wiyot looked back to see that Shayan was still there, watching him and the group descend. He took one good look at Shayan before he continued to walk with the rest of the owls.
“Tonight is your first night of freedom!” Wiyot told the owls as they hooted to his words.
After that they continued to march forward. They made a good amount of progress, going past the pond and through the fields. With no signs of the Henry, Casey or anyone it was full steam ahead. The owls began to smile as Wiyot smiled as well. There were shifts in the grass as Wiyot surveyed the area. He began to move again as the grassed bristled once more.
“What was that?” Wiyot asked. “Are those wolves or something??”
“Don’t be silly”. Mato said. “There are no wolves in Washington”.
AROOOOO!
“Then what was that?”
“The hounds”. Karuk said.
“The hounds?”
“Get those fuckers!” Henry shouted as the howls turned into barking. It was in fact Henry’s sheep dogs that were on Wiyot and the owls’ trail. Wiyot looked around and took flight. But when he looked down, he saw that none of the other owls had joined there. They stood in still as the hounds approached them.
“What are you doing?!” Wiyot cried out. “You’re just going to give in like that?!?”
The owls did not respond as they just stood still in their places. Wiyot flew back down to them as the hounds arrived. The hounds stopped dead in their tracks and began to inspect Wiyot. They took some sniffs of him as Wiyot pecked at them. The hounds then took one good look at Wiyot before they jumped him. Wiyot tried to fly away, but the hounds were able to grasp him before he took off.
It was a mad dash at that point as Wiyot struggled to break free from the hounds. He was able to do so as he got out, but not without some battle scars. Just as he freed himself, Henry and Casey showed up. Calian, Takoda, and Halian were not too far behind them. Wiyot laid there in pain, looking up at everyone.
“What the hell is going on?” Henry asked. “Who the fuck is this owl?”
“You did it”. Calian said. “You crazy bastard”.
“What?” Casey asked. “Takoda…”
“It’s hard to explain”. Takoda said.
“No, it’s not”. Wiyot said.
“What the fuck?!?” Henry yelled.
“Is he your friend?” Casey asked.
“Yeah, I guess you can call him that”. Takoda said. “Though, we just met like a few days ago so I don’t know how you would measure that uh…”
“What was he doing?”
“Freeing the owls that you and your father enslaved”. Wiyot said.
“Are you out of your damn mind?!?” Henry shouted. “I have not enslaved any owls! These are here because they want to be here!”
“They are here because they don’t have any other choice!”
“Wiyot!” Takoda yelled.
“Is that how you feel about this?” Casey asked Takoda. “Do you think that we’re slave owners?”
“I mean, yes”. Takoda said. “Well maybe, no? I don’t know. It’s just that Wiyot was concerned about the rights of the owls. He’s like a freedom fighter ya know?”
“I want you out!” Henry shouted. “I want you all out! If you’re not gone within the hour, you will be having a meeting with my shot gun!”
Henry marched off as his hounds followed him and the owls flew back with him. Casey took one look at Takoda before she walked back with the group. Takoda, Calian, and Halian stood around Wiyot. Looked into the distance as he watched the owls fly back with Henry, Casey and the hounds. Shayan was perched up on a tree branch up high.
“Why?” Takoda asked. “What were you thinking man?”
“I wanted them to be free”. Wiyot said.
“How did you know that’s what they wanted?”
“Because everyone wants to be free!”
“But they could have easily gotten away from those hounds and didn’t!”
“They didn’t”. Wiyot said as he wept. I failed. I failed”.
