“Were you guys not born out in the wild?” Nodin asked.
“…I can’t say for sure”. Wiyot answered.
“What do you mean by that?” Nodin asked.
“Wiyot here is trying to piece together his past”. Takoda said. “But I can say that I wasn’t born in the wild”.
“Same”. Calian said.
“Me too”. Halian said.
“Where were you all born then?” Nodin asked.
“In a little situation called captivity”. Takoda answered.
“In an anima; sanctuary”. Calian said.
“I remember being a pet store”. Halian said.
“What about you Wiyot?” Nodin asked.
Wiyot looked down to the ground and kept his eyes glued there for half a moment before he looked back up where all eyes were on him. He opened his beak as though he was going to start speaking, but no words came out. He then began to move his tongue as sounds began to be heard.
“I…I don’t know”.
“…You don’t know?” Nodin asked.
“How?” Calian asked.
“I just don’t remember”.
“How do you think you lost your memory?” Halian asked.
“I got it!” Takoda went. “He got into one too many fights, got hit in the head too many times. Don’t worry, I’m sure your memories are in there somewhere bro!”
“Yeah”. Wiyot uttered. “Maybe”.
The sun had begun to set and with that Nodin took Wiyot and the others to a small cove that the moon’s light hit. It was a full moon and it shined bright enough that it left the watering hole illuminated. The green leaves were cast in a dark shadow as the moon’s light bounced off the water.
“This reminds me of something”. Takoda said.
“Well, what is it?” Calian asked.
“It’s kinda vague, you know what I mean?”
“Then why announce it?”
“I suppose you could say that I was thinking out loud”.
“And what’s the purpose of that?”
“I want to see if I can catch that vague feeling. It’s all about the hunt at that point”.
“God help me”.
“This is a beautiful spot Nodin”. Wiyot said while he stared down at his reflection in the water.
“Had nothing to do with me”. Nodin explained while looking up towards the stars overhead. “We got lucky. Our whole family was just trying to find anywhere that was safe and we came across this place. There weren’t really any other birds here, so it was perfect”.
“Where is your family anyway?” Calian asked.
“Yeah”. Halian said. “Be cool to meet them”.
“Tch”. Calian let out. “Speak for yourself”.
“They probably are having dinner right now. But maybe we should wait on meeting them”.
“Why?” Halian asked with concern.
“Sometimes, well, a lot of the times they are not very outgoing”.
“Red flag anyone?” Calian asked.
“Well, think about it for a split”. Takoda said. “They don’t know us from a random possum. We should probably be careful and get Nodin to give us a proper intro”.
“You’re really just going to allow yourself to think it’s that easy?” Calian asked. “Lazy”.
“Everyone isn’t a wolf in sheep’s clothing Cal”. Takoda said.
“The verdict is out on everyone until proven otherwise”. Calian said, looking up towards the moon and the stars. “Guilty until proven innocent”.
“Is that any way to live?” Wiyot asked.
“It is if you desire to see reality for what it is”.
“But has that made your life better?”
“What is a better life?” Calian demanded to know Wiyot’s face. “Is it something that I get so that I feel better about myself? An illusion that I create to help myself to forget about the world?”
Wiyot put his right hand on Calian’s left shoulder. Calian looked at him with eyebrows slanted and eyes crossed. Wiyot sat there with a blank stare, his eyes not moving and focused on Calian. Right as Calian began to back away, Wiyot’s mouth had started to open up.
“May the stars carry your sadness away, may the flowers fill your heart with beauty, may hope forever wipe away your tears, and, above all, may silence make you strong. Hold on to what is good, even if it's a handful of earth. Hold on to what you believe, even if it's a tree that stands by itself”.
Wiyot stopped talking as Calian decided to stare at him. Calian looked around and saw that Takoda, Halian, and Nodin were all staring at him. He looked down in the water where he saw his reflection, looked back at Wiyot, and then turned his head away to the right.
“You know”. Halian started. “It doesn’t even matter anyway”.
“Explain”. Calian said, now turn away from Wiyot and focused on Halian.
“It doesn’t matter what’s thrown at us. We’re going to get out of it anyway. Just like we’ve always had. Right?”
“Yeah”. Wiyot said. “That’s right”.
“We the boys!” Takoda let out.
“I swear to God”. Calian said.
“What? It’s true!”
“Am I one of the boys?” Nodin asked.
“You can take my place”. Calian stated.
“Cal”. Takoda started. “You’re irreplaceable. You know that”.
“And you know that a kick in the teeth hurts”. Calian said.
“We gotta do something about your anger buddy”.
“Haha, haha”. Halian let out, not able to control his movements as he laughed out loud.
“What are you laughing at?” Calian asked.
“Nothing”. Halian answered, toning down his laughter. “It’s just kinda funny how we’re here”.
Wiyot became wide eye before he took a look at Halian. Takoda checked Halian as did Nodin. Calian did a sort of double take and backed his head away as the crickets sang behind and around him.
There was movement in the trees to the left of Wiyot, Calian, Takoda, Halian, and Nodin. Wiyot’s eyes tensed as he turned and looked up at the tree. He got up into position with Calian joining him, ready to spread their wings.
“Wait!” Nodin said, getting in front of Wiyot and Calian.
An older male crow revealed himself from inside of the tree. He flew down to where Wiyot and Calian had struck a pose. Nodin was still in front of them with Takoda and Halian watching in the background.
“Nodin!” The older male crow began. “What in the hell is this?!?”
