Capítulo 15: The Final Test

Kai unceremoniously plopped himself down on the ground after performing the sustained sideways jumps test. Poorly. He rubbed his lower back. As one can guess, he really did carry out his plan as he had stated. As he summoned the Zergling, the whole class looked with a bit more awe in their eyes than horror. They had now been exposed enough to realize how powerful this Quirk was. The awe then turned to confusion and shock as it ran around the entire track to build up speed and then jumped right into Kai as he jumped into the air.

His back hurt like hell, but he had been knocked about 10 meters forward before hitting the ground, so he had at least gotten the results he was going for. Still, he hoped that they would not run this test again. Well, perhaps by the next time, he would have a better plan.

Sitting down, he watched the others go through the test. This one and the last were rather lackluster. There were few that actually had anything they could do. Bakugou was able to do a long "jump" himself, using his explosions to propel himself through the air. Depending on how long he could sustain that, it was clear that he could fly.

Mineta only had a chance to stand out again in the sideways jump, where his spheres bounced himself rapidly and almost effortlessly between the spaces. Kai sighed. Clearly, there was more potential to his Quirk than he even knew, and such a Quirk went to an almost shameless pervert. It was a pity, but perhaps he could be worked on.

Tsuyu Asui, the frog girl, naturally excelled in both jumping tests. Kai watched her doing the sidestep test pondering the depths of her Quirk. Animal imitative morphic Quirks had a tendency to have rather fluid boundaries. To put things a little more simply, the fact that her Quirk imitated a broad range of species meant it was possible that she had many little elements from many of them.

"Froggy girl, froggy girl, does all things of the froggy world…" Kai muttered under his breath (to the "Spiderman" tune). There was a distinct possibility of that being true.

Kai looked to the next in line. Once again, it was Aoyama. He had been able to shine (or sparkle) in the long jump, using his beam to push himself backwards several yards. Kai was still working on the mechanics of his Quirk, because it had some contradictions. It was able to pass through the lens on his belt, but was able to give him momentum when he wanted it to. So, what the heck was it?

Kai shook his head. Quirks had made such a mess out of physics. Things acted the way they always had and would, except when someone's Quirk decided, "hey, wouldn't it be funny if we this happened instead?" Still, the scientific method was more or less the same, and asking the questions anyways almost always led to something.

But, that tended to be too much effort for most, and they would just say, "my Quirk does this. That's it." Well, Kai would have some time to slowly build everyone up. He was going to need everyone at their peak.

As he concluded his thoughts, it came time for the final test. Well, at least, the last test that really meant anything. If anyone was going to try to show their potential, this was their last chance. Leaning back and feeling the sun on his face, Kai decided that he had shown enough of what he could do. Even if he wore a changeling again, it wouldn't show anything new to Aizawa.

Not to mention, out in the sun, it would be even more uncomfortable than the last time.

Everyone lined up at the home base on the field. Bakugou went first, getting a couple of meters beyond his previous performance. As he watched and waited, Shoto Todoroki stood behind him, wondering who he was. Kai had already shown himself to be a… unique… individual. But beyond that, he had called out to him by name, without needing introductions. Had they ever met before? Impossible. He would remember someone with a Quirk like that.

So, who the heck was he?

Uraraka went next. Using her Quirk and throwing with all her might, the ball sailed into eternity. The whole class watched in fascination as the ball disappeared. After thirty long seconds, it was gone. A full five minutes later, Aizawa hit a button on his phone, cutting off the reading and manually putting in a value and showing it to the class.

"Infinity!?!"

"Wow, she really got an infinity!!"

Kai was silent but impressed. After all that time, the ball would have been almost halfway out of the atmosphere if she threw it straight up. No wonder Aizawa had cut it off. If it hadn't stopped after all that time, then her Quirk really had no range limit. That could be useful, he mused.

In no time, it was Midoriya's turn to go. The nervousness showed on his face as he stepped up to the plate. Kai hoped that he had had some insight that would let him get some kind of result. After all, it would be useful to have someone like him around. As Midoriya stepped up to the plate and closed his eyes in concentration, an interesting exchange reached Kai's ears.

"Midoriya's not doing too well, is he," Iida, also known as the glasses maj-sack, mused.

"Of course not! He's a Quirkless f**king guppy," Bakugo instantly started screaming in his usual fashion.

Kai bristled at this last remark. Racism due to history was one thing, but racism due to perceived powerlessness? Kai shook his head. The day would very soon come that he would… correct… Bakugo's worldview. But, that would need some time and a reason of opportunity.

Still, he called Midoriya Quirkless? Even though he was strong enough to obliterate Zero Point with one punch? Perhaps Midoriya really had unlocked his Quirk recently. Still, that was odd. There were tests for undiscovered Quirks just for late bloomers who needed hope. And late bloomers were not unheard of.

In fact, one of America's great heroes right now was a late bloomer who only discovered the details of his Quirk at 21. Everyone thought he was Quirkless, but the tests had shown that he had some kind of power. He just didn't know how to use it at all. Then, one fateful day, he discovered his power. Turns out, his Quirk was super strength, agility, and uncanny reflexes. He just needed to get drunk in order to unlock it. His 21st birthday party was a disaster, but he finally found the power to become a hero.

And thus, the Whiskey Soldier, five-time winner of the "Captain America" award (awarded to the greatest hero with the least "flashy" Quirk) was born.

But again, even he knew that he had some kind of Quirk, he just didn't know what the procedure to activate it was and didn't come across it until he could legally drink. For Midoriya to be completely Quirkless and then suddenly have power like this was odd to say the least.

Kai decided he would have to keep a close eye on this one.

Meanwhile, Midoriya was getting ready to activate his Quirk. If he didn't, he would be dead last, and Aizawa would expel him. For his mother who had always believed in him, and All Might who had given him this opportunity, he could not fall so soon. He wound up and got ready to pitch.

Here it comes, Aizawa thought.

All of the encouragement that All Might had given him rushed through his mind as Midoriya pushed power into his arm and threw…

"46 meters," a robotic voice sounded as the baseball thunked onto the ground well within normal parameters.

"Wha… HUH??? I tried using it for sure just now…" Midoriya wondered out loud.

"I erased your Quirk," came a gruff voice from right behind him. Turning around, Midoriya came face to face with Aizawa.

"It defies reason. How did someone like you manage to enter this academy?"

"You erased it? And those goggles… I know you know! You must be the hero who can cancel out the Quirk of whomever he's looking at! The Erasing Hero, Eraserhead!"

The class buzzed with confusion. Most of them had never heard of Eraserhead. Others had heard the name but knew little more than that he was an "underground" hero. Kai's face brightened, as he knew a bit more. He hadn't known this detail from the "Reaper of Hope" stories because it was too identifying. After all, Quirk targeting Quirks were very rare, so those that had them were easily identified by them. And to be able to erase any Quirk temporarily was very powerful.

Not only that, but of all of the heroes that Kai knew of in Japan, the mysterious Eraserhead was one of very few that Kai had any admiration for. After all, he shunned the spotlight and just did his job. And do it well he did. Not only that, but for many intents and purposes, his Quirk wasn't why he won fights. After all, he couldn't be looking at everyone in a crowd at once, and Eraserhead's specialty was organized crime. Group fights were very common. But Eraserhead was not known to work with a squad very often. So with pure skill and light weaponry, he dealt with many criminals on his own.

Kai was very excited to learn from him. He wasn't too concerned with Midoriya getting blocked there. He had a feeling that this guy was going to be able to show Aizawa his worth. Besides, Aizawa's lesson here was something Midoriya was going to have to face.

"From what I've seen," Aizawa continued, "you can't rein in your Quirk's full power. Meaning you can't use it efficiently at all. Did you believe someone would come save you after you crippled yourself again?"

"N-no, I didn't, I ju- whoa!" Midoriya was cut off as the scarf around Aizawa's neck opened up and pulled him closer to the teacher. Kai wondered how this worked, knowing that there wasn't a Quirk involved in its operation. It clearly moved according to Aizawa's will, but how did it move?

"Whatever hopes you may have nursed of your imminent rescue as you can see, nobody is in a position to come to your aid. There's a certain insufferable hero who made a name for himself rescuing over a thousand civilians from a disaster all by himself. You have his brute courage, but all you'll manage to do is run around like a blockhead who needs saving himself. Face it, your power won't help you to become a hero, Midoriya Izuku."

Kai nodded in assent. While he was being a bit harsh, he was right. Kai's admiration of him went up a few notches. Here was a man who saw through the bullsh*t the world tried to push on everyone. Midoriya was going to need to know this as well.

With that, Aizawa closed his eyes and restored Midoriya's Quirk to him.

"Let's get this over with."

The class muttered amongst themselves. Aoyama comforted Uraraka, who was clearly worried for Midoriya (was she really not dating him?). Bakugo just dismissed any comments in Midoriya's favor. Kai just chuckled, which drew some looks.

"Just watch. You're about to see some serious stuff."

Aizawa put some drops into his eyes. He's persistent, he thought. He's not backing down from dying out here… or will he simply wither and settle for last place? Whichever way he goes, he doesn't have a prayer.

Midoriya's mind raced as he got ready to pitch again. I still can't adjust my power output, he thought. Can I stake my chances at adjusting it on this one pitch? No, it's as All Might told me: I can't get it down in such a short span of time! Dang it! Arggggghhhhh.

Well if that's the case, then nothing for it! Full Power!

Aizawa sighed, seeing the resolve in his eyes.

"Probability… zero," he muttered.

Then, just as Midoriya finished the motion of pitching, a wave of energy flew through the air as the ball was sent far into the air. Midoriya shouted in part due to effort, and in part due to pain. Sharp eyes could see that a single finger on his right hand had turned dark as it was destroyed by the backlash of the energy that had gone through it.

Aizawa was shocked, but a grin grew on his face as he realized that Midoriya had found and made a new path. Well, perhaps there was some worth to this kid after all.

Midoriya turned around and clenched his fists, even though it hurt.

"Sensei, I can still move!" he shouted.

Suddenly laughter filled the air. It was Kai. Clapping, he congratulated Midoriya.

"Well done, kid! I knew that you had it in you!"

Whiskey Soldier was the result of a DnD style RPG I played with some friends once. As I was thinking about other Quirks, it just naturally came back.

Another chapter is ready, just gonna do some "editing." Can't not put the air quotes since half the time, I just let it sit until it's been a while, then post without doing anything to it.
