"Oh! Oh oh oh! Penny look! Funnel cakes! Let's go get some right now!"

"Of course my beloved!"

"... So… are they… always like this?" Oscar asked, somewhat helplessly as he watched Ruby and Penny race off into the festival grounds without so much as a by your leave, blinking slowly as rose petals in red, green, and gold began filling the air in their wake. "Also, is their Aura like… is it just me, or is their Aura like, a scary level of synchronized? I mean… I guess I don't know much about it other than the myths and the stories online, but… that's not normal, right?"

"No, it really isn't," Blake stated quietly as she shook her head, crossing her arms and rolling her eyes at the sheer display of love- at this point, it was just a normal thing for her, and while it was still sickeningly sweet and adorable, it had kinda just become part of daily life by now. Plus the rose petals always made her nose itch a little. How annoying. "Aura synchronization usually takes years of companionship for most Huntsmen and Huntresses, and those that can manage it early into a relationship are usually said to be destined to last forever, but that's… not always true. Much as most people would like it to be true, there's really no sign that a relationship will ever last forever. Whatever the case is- achieving a level of synchronization like that is… hard. If their Auras meld together any further, I'm almost expecting them to just swap Aura colors entirely and start using each other's abilities…"

"... Why would you say that? That doesn't sound like anything I've heard of- either from Ozpin's voice in my head, or from what I've read online… which… admittedly isn't much," Oscar asked, looking a little down as he trailed off at the end of his sentence. "Then again… it does sound pretty cool, doesn't it?"

"Yeah, but still. I mean… I guess I skipped ahead in my explanation a little," Blake mentioned, guiding Oscar to go sit down on a nearby bench while they waited for Yang and Weiss to get back from, probably, making out in the corner whilst they went off to go get corndogs. Or maybe Weiss was just pigging out on bacon wrapped turkey legs or something. Whatever. For all that Blake loved her girlfriends so, so much to the point that they had Aura synchronization flashes, she did still enjoy her peace and quiet and solitude sometimes. Oscar was… good company, even for that. Quiet, not too outspoken, a good listener, and endlessly curious. Good kid, he was. Anyway. "So… I guess I should start from the beginning, clear up any information you got wrong from the stories online- there's a lot of myths and misconceptions around it, and sometimes that leads to… bad situations."

"Oh- uh… okay?"

"Yeah. So…" Blake started, tapping her fingers together before continuing on with her explanation as if reciting a lecture. "So, contrary to popular belief, Aura synchronization, or soul bonding, isn't really a well studied phenomenon. It's got a lot of circumstantial evidence and is an actively and regularly observed phenomenon, but it's still kind of just a thing that happens, and it's not like scientists know how to predict when and where one will form or what effects it will have. At the core of it, Aura synchronization is when two or more people connect with each other with their emotions and their very souls begin to bleed together from their emotional closeness to the point that odd phenomena begin occurring around them. The way it works is, usually, by sharing an open, earnest, honest emotional bond with someone. Mental baggage severely degrades the quality of a bond, and while that's not a dealbreaker when it comes to a relationship, it does cause Aura synchronizations to weaken. An Aura synchronization also isn't an indication of a romantic relationship either- Sometimes it's just friendship or just raw closeness. Hell, even enemies can synchronize if the emotions they feel for each other are communicated so openly and earnestly that it starts showing in their Auras."

She paused, looking away and clearing her throat for a moment before speaking again, with Oscar staying silent for now except to make noises of affirmation to tell that he was still listening.

"Right. So. There's a lot of circumstantial evidence to also say that a soul bond can actually be one sided, where one side of a relationship feels the bond more strongly than the other, which is also usually the sign of an unstable relationship- not because someone has too much baggage or secrets or whatever to reciprocate, but sometimes it's just a matter of two people seeing each other differently from how the other does- for example, sometimes someone sees a relationship as student and teacher, but the other feels it's familial and feels the emotions a lot closer than they should. The mechanics of it are odd, but… they're there. Ruby and Penny, as far as I know, started off as having an incredibly close friendship bond when they first became friends- Penny never lies and is incredibly self aware and communicative, and Ruby is both an empath and almost as open with her words and emotions as Penny is. Granted, they had a bit of a one sided relationship at the start, because Penny couldn't feel Ruby's emotions like Ruby could feel hers, but gradually that changed as they got closer and closer together," Blake continued, rubbing her chin and crossing her legs. "Now. As for the stuff the CCT Network tells you- no, you can't force an Aura synchronization with someone. If someone doesn't want it, they're not gonna have it. You're also not destined to synchronize with someone, and a lot of people never do. It's not an indication that a relationship is going badly either- I've met a lot of retired Huntsmen couples who didn't synchronize at any point, but they're still in loving, healthy relationships after decades together. Some people just… aren't very good at projecting their emotions like that. And yes, there's a certain skill to it. You have to not just have an unlocked Aura, but be good at manipulating it, and good at projecting it and good at filling it with your emotions. There's no such thing as a destined soul bond either, by the way. Some people will feel like there is, but usually that's just two people who fell really hard, really fast, and then decided to get poetic with it. A soul bond takes work dammit, and you don't just instantly snap your fingers and make one."

She paused, then cleared her throat. "Ruby and Penny are still the closest I've ever seen to that actually happening, though. They bonded frighteningly quick, and while their Aura synchronization shenanigans only started after they got together, they still found themselves synced really, really quick. Within weeks, even."

"How… do you know? If the… shenanigans… only started after they got together?" Oscar asked, tilting his head to the side as he tried to keep up with the information. "... also, how long is this explanation going to be?"

"... Look, I spent a lot of time researching Aura synchronization to write fanfics when I was younger, let me infodump on you okay?" Blake huffed, pouting a little and patting Oscar on the head to keep him in place as though he were a kitten and she his momma cat. Or… something? "As for how I know… it's like… with a strong Aura and a high enough skill with manipulating it around, you can sense other people's Auras and know vaguely what's going on with them. I'm the best sensor out of the part of Team RWBYP that's, y'know, not an android or an eldritch creature, so I've known for a while- those two were super in sync since they became friends, and with how open they are and how good they were at reading each other and how close they got within even a week of their first meeting… their souls were already starting to synchronize before they even started synchronizing for real. Speaking of the shenanigans… Aura synchronization takes more than one form, it turns out. It's sometimes manifested as glowing, or sharing Aura colors with someone, or even having Aura colors mix with the person you're synchronized with… sometimes it causes uncontrollable but safe Semblance activation in more positive relationships… sometimes it results in the destruction of a fairly large area. Again- largely circumstantial evidence there. Saw it happen though, once. Biiiig breakup in the White Fang. Did not end well."

She shuddered, shaking her head from the sudden chill that ran down her spine. "For me and Yang, it actually takes the form of either her Aura overpowering mine and turning me gold, or mine overpowering hers and turning her purple. It's really fun, and really nice. Yang and Weiss produce a lot of steam because Yang's fire and Weiss' ice cancel each other out. Weiss and I sort of… inflict an area with the sensation of a midnight blizzard… or so Cinder says. Cinder… mostly just starts steaming up and catching fire with her soul bond, but there've been moments where Yang's caught them all canoodling together and it makes them fade in and out of visibility like a desert mirage- oh right, and all three of us together, that's me, Yang, and Weiss, end up causing a dark cloud of smoke to kinda just pour out around us. For Ruby and Penny, they literally get blindingly bright when they're on full bore, and there's just rose petals everywhere in red and green and gold now. And, also, Penny is starting to show signs of leaking rose petals like Ruby does. Not sure what Penny's Semblance is, but I'm assuming that one or both of them have started trying to play around with it."

"I see…" Oscar nodded, then cleared his throat. "So all that to say…"

"Yeah. All that to say that Ruby and Penny really just are like that all the time."

"... Ah."

"It's so sweet and adorable though, isn't it?"

"It makes my heart feel like its teeth are rotting…"

"Gods, right!?"
