Sitting on the leather sofa in the middle of Alonso's office, Natalie held a cup of hot chocolate in her hand as she finished explaining how the envelope had reached her. Throughout the entire explanation, Alonso listened without uttering a word or making a single comment. The silence was nerve-wracking.
"…Aren't you going to say something?"
"When did you last eat something?"
She stared at him in silence. How can I eat when my stomach's always in knots?
He avoided her eyes. "Finish your drink. You have lost weight since the wedding."
The next gulp she took tasted sweeter.
"Your eyes are really red," he continued, still avoiding direct eye contact. "Did you get any sleep at all?"
She shook her head, "Absolutely not. I couldn't even sit on the bed in Kevin's room. Just looking at the pillow reminded me of what you said before you left the club."
"About not sleeping in my bed?"
"Yes."
