Capítulo 13: Battle Training (1/3)

(Yasuo POV)

I wasn't sure what I was expecting, but certain parts of U.A. really is just like a normal high school huh? After the exciting Quirk Apprehension Test, we were sent back to class and looked through our class schedule. English, Literature, Art, Mathematics… these were all subjects we had to study in addition to the Hero Course.

And even though it was only our first day, we still had to sit through boring classroom lessons. It wasn't all bad though. Today we had Mathematics, Literature and Art classes, so we got to meet the teachers teaching these subjects as well. Contrary to my expectations, pro-heroes were the ones teaching us, not regular teachers.

The serious looking yet surprisingly pleasant Cementoss, Ectoplasm who looked more like a villain than a hero, and who could forget the R-Rated Hero: Midnight who wore a skin tight costume that left little to the imagination. Her appearance and general sultry demeanour had the hearts of all the boys pumping during her lesson. That I had confirmed with the boys during lunch time.

During lunch time, I had sat with the few fast friends I had made early in the morning – Mezo, Eijiro and Iida. And just like in the morning, I was slightly disappointed that I was surrounded by a bunch of dudes instead of girls. Though I was happy regardless to have made friends so quickly.

Just like in middle school, the gender barrier was still hard to pierce through as the girls flocked to one another while the guys automatically gathered as well.

Seeing the four of us naturally sit together, the other boys in our class joined us as well, with a few loner exceptions who I assumed preferred to sit alone. The thuggish Bakugo was someone I would not miss, while the super serious Shoto Todoroki was content being left alone as well.

"So… now that it's just us guys here," Denki looked around before lowering his voice and asking the gathered guys during lunch, "who do you think is the cutest in our class?"

All of the boys turned serious, placing their elbows on the cafeteria table and their hands interlocked, covering their chins.

"…That's a hell of a manly question, Denki. Nice one!" Eijiro solemnly remarked.

Iida adjusted his glasses, "Although I am not looking to date before I become a pro-hero and establish my career… I see no harm in just talking."

Fumikage looked on in silence, curious what the other guys thought of the girls.

Even Izuku, the bundle of nerves, looked like he had someone in mind when Denki asked the question.

I looked around the table, "I think we can all agree here… Momo is the cutest, right?"

Denki grinned at me, "Oh, Yasuo you have great taste too!"

A few of the other guys silently nodded, agreeing with my suggestion.

"I don't know, Mina is cute too." Eijiro suggested, "I've known her since middle school, so I don't think of her that way. But objectively, she's kind of a full package right? Cheerful, easy going, and she's really sociable as well."

"Ashido, huh? She has a really nice body too…" Denki added, glancing over at the girls' table where Mina was currently standing over the others and excitedly talking about something.

"Sounds like you got a crush on her yourself, Eijiro." I pointed out teasingly.

"H-hey, that's nonsense! I don't see her that way!" He defended, though I could spot a slight tinge of pink on his cheeks.

"If you're discussing personality, Toru also has that bubbly and cheery energy right? Even though she's invisible…" Mashirao remarked.

Several others shook their head.

"I don't get how someone can date an invisible girl. Oh, but I kinda dig Kyoka's vibes too. She gives off that punk rock chick energy." Hanta confessed.

I nodded in agreement, "I can see that."

Iida was the next person to give his opinion, "I actually think Uraraka is rather cute."

For some odd reason, Midoriya had a larger reaction than normal, "Eh!? Iida, you too- I mean, nothing."

I tilted my head at that, "Wait, back up. Izuku, did you just say, 'Iida, you too'?"

Iida looked surprised, "Oh, I didn't think you were interested in Uraraka! Don't worry, you don't have to think of me as your competitor. Like I said, I'm not interested in dating until my debut."

Izuku looked like he wanted to bury himself in a hole ten feet deep, with his face flushed crimson, "I-I didn't say that! A-and, you're too loud, Iida!"

I chuckled, "Come on, Izuku. Nothing to be ashamed of, we're all guys here. Isn't it better if you declare right now if you're interested if her so that we all know? This way there won't be a conflict of interest between us guys."

The poor boy looked like he couldn't even comprehend what I was saying, "A-Ahh, I c-couldn't…"

Deciding to give him a break, I moved on, "Ignoring that, Mezo, how bout you? Any one special who caught your eye?"

The six-armed, muscular young man looked taken aback at suddenly being called out, "Hmm, no one in particular."

"Heh, you have high standards huh?" I teased.

"No, not really. It's just, I did have a crush on a classmate back in middle school. Well, maybe I still do." He confessed.

Just as the conversation suddenly got juicy, I heard a voice calling me from behind, "Ara, Yasuo?"

I turned around and caught sight of the two cute girls who I had been looking forward to meeting in U.A., Itsuka Kendo and Yui Kodai, who were walking with a bunch of other girls as well.

"Oh hey Itsuka! And Kodai too. You guys made it in as well!" I replied with some joy. Contrary to the exercise outfit they had been wearing during the Practical Exam, I had to admit that they looked much better in U.A.'s uniform instead.

Yui had returned my greeting with a cool nod, though Itsuka smiled in amusement.

"Class 1B. And you're in… General Education right?" She asked, though I could tell she was just teasing.

"How mean. Is that how you treat everyone who saved your life? That hurts, Itsuka, right here." I jokingly pouted while gesturing to my heart.

"Hey, I wouldn't say that you saved my life… Fine, fine, geez can't a girl just joke around anymore?" She relented, smiling.

"Jokes aside, I'm glad to see you two made it in U.A. as well. I have to admit, I was disappointed when I didn't see you in my class." I divulged.

"Mm, Itsuka was upset too when she didn't see you in 1B." Yui who was silent throughout the conversation spoke up.

"No I was not!" Itsuka exclaimed, slightly flustered. Cute.

The guys in my class looked at each other and I overheard Denki whispering to Eijiro, "He's totally not introducing us to those cute girls… Hey, I know he has a powerful quirk and all, but you think we could take him if we went all at once?"

Eijiro firmly nodded, "Such betrayal…"

Somehow, I garnered the resentment from my own classmates as well.

(This was kind of a joke scene that I found funny to write by channeling the way the boys and I talked about girls when we were at that age. I know some of the personalities of the characters don't really match up their canon counterpart. Don't take it too seriously.)

-----------

The next day, regular classes started as usual, with normal lessons like English that was taught by Present Mic. But in the afternoon, however, that was what got us excited – because it was Hero Basic Training!

"I have…!! Come through the door like a normal person!!" All Might declared as he entered the classroom, decidedly not like a normal person.

I widened my eyes in awe, "It's really All Might!" I had been looking forward to this moment since he had announced via holographic projection when I received my U.A. acceptance letter that he was going to be teaching here.

Probably every teen my age had a phase where they admired the Symbol of Peace, so it was hard not to feel like a fan after seeing the actual hero-celebrity in person. I could feel the general atmosphere of excitement and eagerness from my fellow classmates as well. No one was immune to All Might's awe-inspiring aura that could be felt the moment he announced his presence – not even Bakugo could resist being stirred.

"Hero Basic Training!" He started, "The class that will put you through all sorts of special training to mold you into heroes! Today's activity is…Battle Training!!"

I could hear Bakugo's slightly over-enthusiastic reaction two seats in front of me.

"And for that, you need these!" All Might gestured to the wall and with a click, segments of the wall protruded out of it to reveal cases within numbered from 1 to 20.

He continued, "In accordance with the special requests forms you filled out before being admitted to U.A., these are the specially made, custom costumes designed for each and every one of you!"

The whole class stood up in excitement, some of us, including myself, pumping up our fists in the air. "Costumes! Alright!"

"After you change, assemble at Ground Beta!" He instructed.

We quickly made our way to the locker rooms so that we could change into the costumes that some of us had designed ourselves.

I opened up the case that had my student number, 19, engraved on it and put on the costume within that I had designed and submitted to the school.

The largest article of clothing was a black trench coat with dark blue lining that was tighter at the top and secured with three straps going across my chest. Underneath it was just a form fitting black tank top as well as black pants with a black leather utility belt.

I wore black military boots and fingerless gloves to complete the ensemble. Oh right, I almost forgot to strap on the forearm protector that I had requested as well on my right arm.

I had designed my costume to function for one purpose and one purpose only – to look cool. Or at least how I imagined a cool costume to look like. The trench coat was added for the sole purpose of fluttering in the wind when I was flying.

The one exception was a gas mask I requested that covered the lower half of my face. It was similarly black with dark blue lining and two circular filters.

This was a countermeasure against gaseous attacks like Midnight's Somnambulist quirk since I wasn't sure if my barrier could keep out something like that. Other than that, it was also a way to protect my anonymity when I officially debut as a pro-hero.

I understood that licensed, pro-heroes had to officially register with the Hero Public Safety Commission, so it wasn't like my identity would be hidden like the olden days when vigilantes were more prominent.

But I had to also consider my defenceless mom and dad, one of whom lost the ability to use her quirk effectively and the other having a non-combat quirk. I didn't want villains recognizing me when I was out with my family and then deciding to target my family. It was a patchwork solution to an unsolvable problem.

Aside from the mask, because of how versatile my quirk was, I had little requirements when it came to my costume. Anything and everything that came my way I could just handle with my Psychokinesis, so unlike some of my classmates who had requested for certain devices that could enhance their quirks, for me it was unnecessary.

I looked around in the boys' locker room, taking a glimpse at the costumes my classmates were changing into.

Izuku was putting on a rather simplistic green jumpsuit that looked more practical than showy. Bakugou had hand grenade like attachments on his wrists, which seemed weirdly fitting. Iida had on what looked like a full set of sleek armour that seemed to need a bit more time to put on.

Eijiro went the other route, opting for a bare-chested apparel that showed off his muscly torso, while Yuga was strapping in an ostentatious cape attached to a medieval armour.

I thought that Iida's armour and Hanta's costume looked the coolest aside from my own, while the ones like Koji was wearing was pretty lame. But to each their own I guess.

When we were about done, we started heading out of the locker room and towards the training ground. We found that the girls were already assembled at Ground Beta ahead of us. Looking at how skimpy Momo's costume was, I guessed that the girls just had less things to put on when compared to the guys, some of whom were decked out in armour.

But I had to say, the assembled Class 1A looked pretty dang heroic already, what with all of us in our hero costumes.

Momo surprisingly took the initiative to approach me, "Yasuo? Wow, you look so different with that mask on. Sharp costume!"

I pulled down the mask, since it was designed with a tight, air proof fabric like material, it could be pulled down and used as a scarf-like accessory as well. "Does it look uncool? I thought it'd be an effective countermeasure to gaseous attacks."

She shook her head, "Oh that's smart. And no, it looks cool. A little scary though."

I looked her up and down, the only appropriate time I was reasonably justified checking someone out like that, "And I'm guessing your costume was designed for you have as much exposed skin as possible to create items, right?"

"Oh my, you'll make a girl blush staring at her like that. And yes, you're right. I actually wanted it to be even more revealing so that I could create even bigger items. But I was rejected because they had restrictions on exposed skin in a costume." She teased before shrugging helplessly.

'Even more revealing huh…' I mused to myself, "That's unfortunate."

"Indeed."

While the rest were chatting, All Might called for our attention, "Are we all here then? Looking good students!!"

Iida raised a hand, "Sensei! This appears to be the same testing location used in the Entrance Exams. Will we be performing cityscape maneuvers again?"

All Might raised a finger and shook it, "Nope! You will be moving on to the second stage of your training – Indoor Anti-Personnel Battle Training!"

He continued, "While villain battles are most commonly seen outdoors; statistically, the most heinous villains are more likely to appear indoors! That is because the cleverest villains out there lurk in the shadows, away from the public eye in this hero-filled society of ours! So you will be learning how to battle in close quarters and confined areas as well."

"You'll now be split in two teams: Villains and Heroes; and face off in two-on-two indoor battles!"

Tsuyu stepped forward, "No basic training?"

All Might smirked, "Experience is the best teacher!"

"What determines victory?"

"Can't I just blast everyone away?"

"Will you threaten to expel the worst performing pair like Aizawa-sensei did?"

"How do we proceed to divide ourselves up in teams?"

All Might cleared his throat before pulling out a slip of paper.

"One at a time, young ones. Patience. Let me explain!" He declared before starting to read from what I assumed to be a cheat sheet.

"This is how the training will unfold: villains are hiding a nuclear weapon in their hideout and the heroes have to go take care of it! The heroes have a limited amount of time to either capture the villains or secure the weapon. Whereas the villains must either capture the heroes or protect the weapon until time is up. Simple, right?"

"Your partners will be decided by drawing lots! There are ten sets of two slips of papers that are alphabetically ordered. Your partner will be one who drew the same letter as you."

Iida widened his eyes, which was hard to see under that helmet of his, "Is that really the best way!?"

Izuku stepped in to explain, "It makes sense because pro-heroes often have to team up with heroes from other agencies on the spot during emergencies."

"So that's how it is. I apologize for getting ahead of myself, sensei!"

All Might beamed, "It's fine. Now let's draw lots!"

The students started taking turns to draw lots.

I smiled to myself. The others could only let fate decide who their partners would be, but not me. And the partner I wanted was… Momo Yaoyorozu.

Putting aside her beauty, she had a quirk that was immensely useful in any kind of situation, especially so when put to use by someone as intelligent as her. She was also probably smart enough to come up with a strategy that would maximize our chances of victory. Being able to spend more time with her and chat her up was just a bonus.

I politely let Momo go ahead of me, and after seeing that she drew 'C', I used my Psychic Sense to permeate the box and identified the other 'C' slip that was fortunately still in the box. I reached in and pulled it out after her.

"Oh, what a coincidence. We're on the same team." I remarked to Momo, showing her the slip of paper I drew.

She smiled, "So it seems."

Once everyone was done, All Might took out two more boxes, one labelled Hero while the other was marked as Villain.

"So that is how we get chosen for either the Hero or Villain role." I commented.

"Moving on, first up are…" All Might fished out two balls, "Team A and Team D!"

Team A and Team D, if I recalled correctly was the delinquent partnered with the honor student and the self-hurting quirk user partnered with infinity girl.

I glanced at the two teams, where Izuku and Bakugo seemed to be aware that they had been chosen to compete with each other. 'Should be interesting…'
