Capítulo 29: Chapter 28: Lucid Revelations

"How troublesome."

The woman, dressed in a purple top, black leggings, and a doctor's overcoat, walked through the alleys with her heels click-clacking all throughout.

"Hmm."

Looking ahead on this night, she saw a figure… no, figures that were smashing cars, and store windows, and causing anarchy wherever they went.

Passersby shied away from them, scared of the criminals and what they'd do should anyone try to retaliate, but Reiki only narrowed her eyes as she used her quirk to 'read' it from a distance.

'A… clone.'

She walked towards the targets, hoping this would lead her closer to her goal of coming here.

A few steps later, and once within close proximity, the thing noticed her, not that 'it' was hard with the mysterious lady being the only one daring to approach.

'It' stopped, waiting in place, allowing her to come, but through her quirk's senses, Reiki felt a signal get sent from its brain to its chest.

Heat swelled up within the core at such intensity that even from a few meters away, Reiki felt like the sun had reappeared and was shining down on her while she was dressed in an all-black outfit.

She instantly put her hands on its shoulder, thankful that it didn't react. 'Revert.'

She spoke out in her mind, and as if a revelation from God had descended, all internal actions within 'its' body stopped.

The husk slumped down, appearing to be resting, though the person in front of it knew it wasn't asleep; it was temporarily brain-dead.

Still not wanting to cause an even bigger commotion and help whatever nefarious person was behind these actions, she grabbed its arm and carried it back through the alleyway she exited, leaving the people's views.

After walking for what felt like hours, twisting and turning, she finally arrived at an abandoned building she'd scouted out before.

She heaved the huge sack of meat up the stairs and through the worn-out and crack-ridden walls before finally arriving on the middle level of the building.

"Phew."

THUD

Dropping it, she took out her phone, checking hopefully but being disappointed in the lack of service or connection she got.

In her mind, the flash of lightning replayed a scene she witnessed not too long ago.

'Cause mass confusion, separate the people, ruin any plans of linking up, and distract the heroes with the endless clones. It's all a distraction… but for what?'

She didn't know; there was too little information she had so far, and frankly, she didn't intend to deal with it even if she found the answer.

In this slow district, someone is planning something—something that has the big-wig heroes occupied right now—meaning if this isn't resolved soon, then All Might should arrive.

Heaving a dry chuckle, she said, "He'll go 'Smash' here and 'Smash' there, and boom, problem over, nothing to involve myself in… ah, here it is."

All while thinking about the outside situation, she'd been searching through her medical bag, finally finding and grabbing her scalpel along with any other tools she'd need.

"Let's get to work. Process 1: Can it make sense?"

She undid her quirk, bringing back this thing's lucidity and reviving it from its brain-dead state.

However, not wanting it to go on a rampage, she used some numbing solutions she'd spread out onto its body to render its limbs useless.

After it twitched a bit, she took out her scalpel and tore along its torso, marveling at the resilience it had to her blade.

If she didn't have the hobby of sharpening her tools in her free time, she was sure this would take a lot more effort on her part.

Although a wailing scream didn't come out, more twitches confirmed that this thing could feel.

"Next process: Can this thing be understood?"

She moved some fingers in front of its eyes, watching as they tracked her. Then, after blocking its senses and testing the others, she determined it could sense her in all ways as her previous experiment suggested.

But when she tried to speak with it, incoherent sounds came out as a relay.

After switching to Spanish, English, and simple Mandarin, she determined that either this thing didn't understand the language or that it wouldn't respond.

To put it to the test, she conducted an experiment using the universal language across all species: pain.

She flipped it over onto its back, digging through its skin before reaching the spinal cord. After making small indents painfully slow, she recorded her information.

'It doesn't seem to be able to think properly on its own, and it's more like a robot that can only do what's ordered. No response to words or outside movements besides tracking… perfect.'

Despite not being able to gain information from it, Reiki was more than satisfied, as this furthered her current theory that she only needed a couple more tests to verify.

And a couple, it wasn't.

She'd spend the whole day torturing the monster: a muscle fiber test, a resistance overall test—she'd even found an EMP located in its arm, solidifying her thoughts that it was a pawn to further the plan of whoever was behind the attacks.

Still, she'd gotten what she wanted and could say that her initial suspicions were correct.

Why would something so valuable be allowed out and have no trackers? It was the ultimate weapon, not something you leave alone.

The answer, when adding in that she saw more of them when she captured this one, was obvious: it's not the only one.

Well, first off, what is this?

'A biological revolution, a weapon of mass destruction, an amplified human.'

She thought up many names, all meaning the same thing: this thing was stronger, more durable, and she'd even wager faster than humans.

It was a better soldier than any minion, and she figured the enemy knew that as well.

The next question was: How did someone make such a weapon?

That was something she could answer off the top of her head. She'd investigated Overhaul and what he was trying to sell in front of their last mission, believing that any clues could lead her to 'him.'

"It's better than being a coward and regretting things forever."

Such words were not originally meant for her, but for some reason, they stuck with her.

She witnessed the boy reconnecting with his friend, Ashnah having some odd but beneficial changes over the months, and the atmosphere being better in the building.

So she asked herself a question when she saw everyone moving forward while she felt stuck.

'Why are you here?'

She'd come with him, hoping he could offer a place and help in her revenge, and yet when she looks back on the last 10+ years, has she even achieved anything?

She thought she was dedicated to her goal, yet something about the way Naia said the word 'coward' opened her eyes.

'I'd been ignoring information about him,'

She could briefly remember some trials she'd found but dismissed over the years. Excuses such as the weather isn't right, or why would this be true?

'Trails that surely have gone cold by now, trails that could've helped me… why did I change?'

In the past, she was a hot-headed person whose only view was revenge, yet as the times moved on with no result, she became complacent.

'Or fear.'

She'd admit that some part of her was still afraid of him because of what she found out about him in the first place.

Despite the horrible activity, she'd truly thought it was for the benefit of society, so her reactions when she found out the truth were shock, disgust, and fear.

She'd finally realized what happened to her colleagues who disappeared, and she was afraid that she'd be next.

'So I ran away.' It was a logical choice back then, but not one she was willing to take now.

So when thinking back to her question 'How did someone make such a weapon?'

The answer was that you didn't.

You don't make such numbers of clones with a quirk, at least not ones this durable and permanent. Instead, you modify people and bodies to suit your needs.

'Bodies were his passion and strong suit, after all.'

There's been a series of kidnappings after people turn into Instant Villains, as the police called them, people whose quirks have gone out of control and made them go on a rampage.

'Sounds a lot like Trigger.'

Backing up her theory that these clones used to be people was a simple test, one so simple and so rudimentary that you wouldn't prepare against it.

A blood test.

She'd snagged a few samples during her time here, and what was the result?

The clones didn't hold the same blood, meaning it wasn't some one person or thing they modified over and over.

'If that's the case, then as long as I investigate enough, I should find some clue towards where he is.'

Set for the future, Reiki stood up, wiping off her utensils and putting them back into her bag.

Then she cut off the head of the creature, being careful as to where the blood squirted.

While doing so, she was actively using her Quirk Lucidation to prevent this thing from making any noise in its final moments.

'Not that the name's correct. To reset the body into a state of rest. Making sure nothing is going on is a good description. But alas, that's what happens when you allow a 5-year-old to pick a 'cool' quirk name.'

She stood up, bag in hand, and walked down the stairs thinking, 'Next destination: the police department. I need to get my hands on a vial of Trigger.'
