Capítulo 11: Chapter 11- Defenses and traps

"David, I've got ideas for our defenses!" Ethan shouted as he and Ruth arrived home. "Can't I have something less intense?" David asked with a sigh, "Nope, now get your ass over here and look at the plans." Ethan said excitedly.

David came over to Ethan, where he saw mountains of papers scattered about with sketches and messy handwriting on them. "That's a lot... How much time did you spend on this?" David asked both impressed and depressed. Impressed because his dad must have put in a lot of effort to make all those plans, but depressed since he knew that he'd be the one to make all of the ideas into reality.

"I worked on it in the last half a year while you were enchanting all the drips. Take a look." Ethan handed David a paper from the huge stack. On the paper was a small turret-looking device with some scribbles around it. "Hm... Do you want me to make a small turret that shoots ice shards?" David asked as he read the scribbles. "Continue to read," Ethan instructed. "Oh, this is brilliant! It'll gather moisture from the air and turn it into ice shards and shoot them. It'll probably be pretty slow, but if I make enough it will compensate for that. As for the building materials... We can carve them from sandstone!" David exclaimed at Ethan's plan. "I knew you'd like that, now come and sit, we have to filter all of those" Ethan said as he pointed at the huge stack of papers. "Fuck."

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"Oh, this is a good one! I didn't even remember that I wrote that." Ethan said excitedly as he found another idea he liked in the stack we were analyzing. "What's it this time?" David asked with no light in his eyes. He thought that the purpose of their endeavor was to take only a handful of the best defenses his father came up with and implement them.

Unfortunately, his dad took his role extremely seriously, and almost every idea was worth implementing. They tried to get rid of those that were similar, but David still had a mountain of papers about a feet tall behind him with ideas they needed to implement. "A quirk nullifier," Ethan said as he read his old scribbles.

"A WHAT?!" David jumped up from surprise. "You can enchant objects with various effects, right?" Ethan asked in an attempt to lead David. "Yes, but h-" David asked as he stopped mid-sentence as he came to a realization.

"Originally, I thought you could make a barrier that nullified or weakened the quirks of those within, but you obviously aren't at that level yet, so I figured It would make a good combo with the turrets. Even if the enemy blocks the ice shard, their quirk will still get weakened from the secondary enchantment. That is if you can make one like that."

"I don't think I can... The problem is that the more powerful and complex the enchantment is, the harder it is to implement it. If you told me a very specific category of quirks, it'd be possible, if you told me a specific effect, it'd be excellent, and if you told me a quirk down to the tiniest details, It would probably be nullified or severely weakened by the enchantment. Though for complete nullification I'd need my quirk to be stronger than theirs" David said, Shooting the idea down.

"I see, but we can still make it work." Ethan insisted. "We can enchant every couple of turret to weaken a different quirk category. A couple for physical enhancement, A couple for conjuration, a hell of a lot for mental types. As long as we cover our bases well, we can make a really solid defense." He explained.

"I hate it that you're right... Fine, but it won't be that effective so don't expect much from it. At least it'll be some good practice" David said. "yeah, but you won't enchant only this. We still need those medical supplies right?" Ethan winked. "...You're pure evil" David sighed in defeat.

In the end, David and Ethan decided on enchanting cloths to have a passive healing effect and some water containers to have a rapid and intense healing effect, though the water would only heal existing wounds for a moment. And so, another routine began.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

*Unspecified amount of time later*

"God damn... You look half-dead, David. What have you been doing?" Ruth said as she caught David with a pale face, sitting next to a weird device and a pile of clothes. "I finally have it... Luckily it's like drips enchantment, but planning this one was really difficult." David muttered.

*BANG* "Talk clearly," Ruth said as smoke was coming off David's head.

"Ouch!" David yelped. "Fine, I'll talk better. Can you call Alex? I have another pile of clothes ready, and I want him to start installing those turrets." David asked Ruth. "I'm busy with my training class... But it's in the same direction, so sure, I'll call him on my way" Ruth replied after thinking a little.

"Take your time, I'll take a nap in the meanwhile," David said as he lied down on the sandy floor. "Hey, D-" Sarah came in the house, but as soon as she got in, David jumped upwards in a sudden motion, and accidentally pushed a little sand cloud into her eyes.

"WH- Shit, that hurts!" Sarah rubbed her eyes to get the sand out. "Language," David teased her. "Oh, shut up, you have absolutely no right to lecture me about language." Said a pissed off Sarah.

"Fair enough, and sorry about the sand," David apologized. "What did you come here for?" He changed the subject. "I basically haven't seen you in forever, all you do is stay here. Why is that? My dad keeps telling me that you're busy, and not to disturb you, but I do want to know what's going on." Sarah explained, finally stopping rubbing her eyes.

"Alex and I are working on a very important, and classified, project together," David said. "What projects are classified, exactly? I don't remember there ever being one. And besides, can't you trust me with this? I thought we were past this " Sarah didn't buy it. "There's a first time to anything, and I'm telling you the truth. If the others find out about what we're doing, there will definitely be a bad outcome. So please, let's leave it at that," David asked.

Sarah looked David in the eyes, and she could tell he wasn't lying. She knew him since they were babies, and she knew how to read the guy. "Ok, I'll let it go. But now you got me curious about this project. When the results are out, whatever they are, I'm expecting to be impressed" Sarah said as she said goodby and left.
