Capítulo 28: Don't bother me again

"Why would I want to report you to the police?" Karina asked back, after trying with no success to remember what he had done wrong to warrant such action from her.

"That night at the club, I killed people. Any normal person would go to the police or be freaking out right now. But here you are, acting as if nothing happened." Veron explained, seeing how she was genuinely confused by his question.

His explanation made Karina knit her brows and purse her lips as she looked away from him. She just realized that she hadn't even thought of it that way until now.

If she had decided to go to the police, it would have been because of Chloe's suspicious involvement in the whole issue. It wouldn't have been to report Veron, despite knowing that he killed people.

"Tell me, was that a usual sight for you? Have you killed someone before?" Veron queried, and Karina's widened eyes snapped back to him.

"No! Why would I do that? That was the first time I witnessed something like that." Karina quickly responded in her defense.

"There are lots of reasons to kill someone, but let's leave that. If that was your first time, why are you so cool with it?" Veron's expression didn't change. He remained calm as if the answers he sought weren't important to him.

However, inside of him, he was itching to know. He had been expecting police summons, but she disappointed his expectations. And ever since he started dealing with humans, no one except she had achieved that.

"I'm not cool with it. I just don't want trouble."

"What kind of trouble?" Veron pushed further, and Karina almost cried out in frustration. She came here to discuss something different, not this. Shouldn't he be happy she didn't file a report?

"Everything that has to do with the authorities. It will only give birth to further problems for me and I want to avoid that at all costs." Her answer made Veron narrow his eyes at her, an action which made her swallow as he suddenly looked more intimidating.

"You are being vague. I hate that. Give me direct and clear answers." His voice echoed, as he moved his body forward, his elbows now resting on the desk.

Karina unconsciously leaned back and frowned. It was becoming clearer that the both of them can't work together. Just a few minutes and the atmosphere was already tense. How would she cope for three weeks?

"I'm sorry, I can't say more than I've said. It's something personal and I wouldn't want to discuss it." She said in a low voice, hoping he'd understand and not get offended, or even insist she explained.

Veron said nothing for a while, watching her. She was no longer looking at him. Instead, her eyes were darting from one item on the table to the next, while her lower lip was trapped between her upper and lower teeth.

He pushed his body away from the table, and shifted back to his previous position, suspecting that he may have scared her.

"Do you like parties?" A different question flew out of his mouth, bringing relief to Karina as he decided to drop the police issue.

"No, I don't." She answered, still finding the table and the things on it more interesting and less intimidating than his face.

"Why were you at that club?" Another question, and this time, Karina let out a frustrated sigh, before setting her eyes back on him.

"Can we just talk about why I'm here?" She threw a question back as the whole question-and-answer session was becoming unbearable.

"We will do that after you tell me why you were there."

"I didn't intend to go there. I was going to the party organized by the class with Chloe..." Karina narrated what happened that night up till the time he showed up. If this was the only way to get him to quit questioning her, then so be it.

"Now can we talk about why I'm here?" She asked after her narration, frustration now evident on her face.

"Of course. I want you to attend a party with me, Saturday night." Veron requested and Karina looked at him incredulously.

"I said I don't like parties. In fact, I hate them." Karina reminded, stressing each word in case he didn't understand her the first time. Apart from frustration, anger was already brewing inside of her.

"I heard you correctly." Veron rocked his head. "But I still want you to attend this one with me. That's the last and most important condition attached to me working with you."

Karina clenched her jaws as she glared at him for a few seconds. Then without a word, she stood up and made to leave the office. However, his voice made her pause.

"I will be expecting a response from you by Saturday morning. If I don't hear from you by then, I will pick someone else."

"Go ahead. I don't care. I won't attend any party with you." Karina returned, her voice raised higher than normal due to her annoyance.

As soon as she said that, she stormed out of the office without looking back.

One side of Veron's lips curled up the moment she stepped out. His mission has been accomplished. He could predict her next move, which was to return to Mr. Joel, stating reasons why she can't work with him, and the man will have no choice but to pair her with another person.

His heart suddenly tightened at that thought as a strange sadness suddenly engulfed him.

"Gerrard?" He called out to his wolf, but all he got was silence.

"I know you are there, Gerrard. You don't have to give me the silent treatment. You know I'd rather have your endless, annoying whining in my head than watch you go through the pain of rejection."

"You are a coward, Veron. And don't you dare make this about me. Until you decide to do the right thing, don't bother me again." Gerrard remarked, then disappeared from Veron's head the next second.

Veron frowned as the sting of guilt hit him. Moving forward on his seat, he pinched the skin between his brows and shut his eyes. He could feel Gerrard's emotions and knew his wolf was hurt, but he consoled himself with the thought that what he did was for their good and the best for both of them.

After calming himself down, his eyes snapped open and a dangerous glint flashed across them. He jumped into Skye's head and dropped a message.

"Skye, find out everything there is to know about Chloe Bradford."
