On a typical weekday morning, Max would usually find Yukio bustling about, preparing breakfast, while Viper might already be engrossed in her experiments in the laboratory. However, today was different. As Max descended the stairs, he was greeted by the unexpected sight of Blink, the cook for the day, and Yukio still nestled in bed.
Even Viper, who typically delved into her scientific pursuits early, was lounging on the sofa with a groggy air about her. It seemed that, apart from her time spent in the laboratory, Viper had developed a fondness for the comfort of the sofa.
"Yukio isn't up yet?" Max inquired casually, noting the unusual morning scene.
"Who could sleep through such a ruckus last night?" Viper quipped back with a playful smirk.
Max chuckled, responding, "You'll get used to it eventually."
Viper was momentarily taken aback by Max's nonchalant demeanor. Soon after, Yukio made her way downstairs, though she appeared slightly under the weather, likely due to a restless night.
Despite the simplicity of the breakfast, Blink's culinary skills shone through, earning praise from Max. Following the meal, Max set out with Blink, picking up Lauren along the way. The duo embarked on their training regimen, each assisting the other in honing their unique abilities.
Blink skillfully manipulated portals while Lauren demonstrated her talent for closing them, a skill she had honed through practice after the incident where Blink's overuse of her abilities left her in a coma, ultimately saved by Lauren's intervention.
As they trained, time seemed to slip away unnoticed, consumed by the intensity of their practice sessions. By the time they returned to the villa, evening had descended, and they gathered for dinner. Lauren decided to stay the night with Blink to continue their training, further strengthening their bond.
Amidst the training and camaraderie, Max couldn't help but notice a subtle shift in the atmosphere at home. Viper, perhaps intentionally, made several casual appearances in her underwear, adding a playful charm to the evening.
....
In the tranquil depths of the woods, Blink and Lauren found themselves locked in a persistent struggle. The portal they attempted to close displayed erratic behavior, its size fluctuating unpredictably. After what felt like an eternity of effort, they finally managed to wrestle the portal shut. Blink let out a sigh of relief, but Lauren's expression remained troubled.
Yet another setback.
Their dynamic was akin to fire and water: water could douse flames, but against an inferno, its efficacy waned. Initially, they experienced many triumphs together, with Lauren making remarkable strides. However, her progress had hit a plateau, frustrating both herself and Blink.
As they caught their breath, a subtle flicker caught their attention—the distant door opening, signaling Max's arrival in their realm.
"What's going on?" Max inquired, noting the unexpected disturbance.
Blink and Lauren watched as Max, suspended in the alternate space, lifted off the ground. Though his levitation was modest, barely surpassing the height of a fist, it was a remarkable feat nonetheless. His muscles strained with the effort, struggling to maintain balance.
After hovering for more than ten seconds, Max descended, returning to solid ground.
"You can fly?" Blink and Lauren approached, excitement bubbling in their voices.
Max, slightly fatigued from the exertion, shook his head. "I barely managed to hover. 'Flying' might be a stretch."
"That's progress!" Blink exclaimed enthusiastically.
Max grinned wearily. "It's taxing, though."
Though not a prodigy, Max demonstrated a knack for learning through trial and error. He also sought theoretical insights from Lauren, tapping into her knowledge gleaned from high school education. After all, everything she knew had its roots in academic teachings, and Max proved adept at catching up.
Lauren delved into the concept of gravity, elucidating its intricacies. Gravity, she explained, manifested as the inclination of massive objects to draw closer to one another, stemming from the curvature of spacetime influenced by mass. It represented a distortion of the fabric of reality, intertwined with cosmic forces, the speed of light, spatial dimensions, magnetic fields, and structural composition of objects.
Max, simplifying the complex notions, likened gravity to the way space warps around a black hole.
Through his exploration, Max discovered that when he created a door, it caused a distortion in the alternate dimension's space. However, this distortion lacked the potency to generate enough gravitational force. Nonetheless, it granted Max a clearer grasp of the concept.
Shifting his focus, since he couldn't alter the alternate space, Max pondered altering himself. He experimented by opening a door on himself at the same frequency as the distortion, which proved successful. Though he lacked understanding of the theoretical intricacies, achieving success demanded physical effort and unwavering focus, marking a promising start as Blink acknowledged.
After a brief break, Max inquired about Blink and Lauren's progress, offering guidance where needed, before diving back into practice in a different space. Despite a few setbacks, Max ultimately triumphed in soaring into the sky—albeit within his alternate dimension.
The timeless dream of flight stirred within Max, bringing an undeniable rush of exhilaration. Even though he couldn't feel the wind as in the real world, the experience thrilled him nonetheless.
Ascending into the sky through a door above him, Max felt the gravitational force vanish upon emerging from the alternate space, initiating an involuntary descent. The wind roared around him, filling the air with a chorus of whistling sounds.
As the ground approached, Max swiftly reacted, opening a door in front of him and disappearing mid-air. In the alternate dimension, his body halted steadily, descending slowly.
