Eastwatch Castle
John's POV
I lie on the bed in the room assigned to me, staring at the ceiling and thinking about everything that has happened. After all we went through beyond the wall, Jon and the others are resting, trying to recover from the cold. Roberta is in the room next to mine, probably doing the same.
But I cannot stop thinking about the Night King.
He is nothing like he was in the series. He did not go down easily. This Night King is different. He dodged my attack with Caliburn, which proves he has superhuman reflexes, just like me.
And then there is his strength. The way he hurled that ice spear with such force was insane. No ordinary being could pull that off, not even a strong one.
The Night King is dangerous. That much is obvious now.
Let us break it down. What does he have?
Superhuman strength
Superhuman reflexes
Superhuman durability
Fire immunity
Cryokinesis
Necromancy
Limited immortality (He has been around for centuries without aging or weakening.)
But even with all that, he is not unbeatable.
When I tried to retrieve the sword during the fight, he touched it for barely a second before letting go. Either he did not have the strength to hold it, or it hurt him.
I think it is the second option. Caliburn is a holy sword, after all, and it makes sense that someone like him would be affected by it.
That realization makes one thing very clear: I need to get better with Caliburn.
Right now, I cannot even use it to its full potential. My portals are short-range and unstable. I can barely keep them open for more than a few seconds, and even that drains me.
It is not as simple as just thinking about it and having the portal appear perfectly. Okay, maybe it technically is, but I still need to practice control, precision, and range.
Arthur took years to master this. But I do not have years. I do not even have months.
If I am going to face the Night King again, and I know I will, I need to get better. Fast.
I have got three days before the next spin.
I was hoping for something good like toon force from Kimihito, but no luck this time. Looks like my bad streak is not ending anytime soon.
My thoughts are interrupted by a knock on the door.
Moving quickly, I open it and find a Night's Watch soldier standing there.
"A meeting is being held," he says plainly. "Your presence is requested."
I nod and step back, closing the door behind me.
Before heading to the meeting, I make my way to Roberta's room.
Knock, knock.
"Who is it?" she asks from inside.
"It's me," I reply. "A meeting is happening. Do you want to join?"
Seconds later, the door opens, and Roberta steps out. Together, we head toward the meeting room.
When we arrive, most of the group is already there.
The Hound sits near the fire, staring into the flames. It looks like he is coming to terms with his past.
Beric is on the opposite side of the room, quietly observing.
Tormund and Jon are seated near the table, along with Davos and Gendry.
Daenerys is absent, likely still recovering from the loss of one of her dragons.
As we find seats, my mind drifts again. I cannot help but wonder if the Valyrians of old used some kind of magic to bond dragons to their bloodline. It would explain why they respond only to her family, even now.
I'll have to get Daenerys's blood, along with Bran's and a few others'. I have some plans regarding her dragons, though I need the perfect time and opportunity to implement them.
Davos's voice snaps me out of my thoughts. "I don't know your name," he says, straight to the point.
Guess we're skipping the small talk. Everyone's eyes are on me, waiting, like they're trying to piece me together.
"I'm John Smith, a mercenary," I say, keeping it casual. I nod toward Roberta. "And this is Rosarita Cisneros, my partner."
Roberta doesn't say much, just gives a small nod. She's got this calm, no-nonsense vibe that makes it clear we're not here to share life stories.
They get it. No one presses for more.
Davos looks at us for a second longer, then nods. "Well, John Smith, Rosarita, welcome to our little corner of the world. Let's hope you're as good as you seem, because we'll need every bit of help we can get."
"Don't worry," I say, "We're good at what we do."
Before anyone can say anything else, the door opens, and Daenerys walks in.
She looks composed, but you can tell she's been crying. Her eyes are red, and there's this heavy sadness around her, even though she tries to carry herself like a leader.
"Let's start the meeting," she says, heading straight for the center seat, taking control like it's second nature.
Jon stands, his voice steady but serious. "As you've all seen, there's an army of the dead marching south. Soon—"
I interrupt, "And a dragon."
The room goes dead quiet. Everyone's faces tighten as they realize what that means. A dead dragon on their side.
Daenerys's expression hardens, her pain flickering into anger for a second.
Jon gives her a quick glance before continuing. "And a dragon. Soon, they'll breach the castle. After that, Winterfell."
"The longer we wait," he add, leaning forward, "the bigger their army gets."
The silence after that is suffocating. It's not just about survival anymore. It's about facing something that grows stronger with every step—and knowing that time is not on our side.
