Chapter 7: Embracing the Dark
It was late afternoon, and the mansion was bathed in golden light. Bruce stood on the balcony, his eyes wandering across the garden below. His thoughts were heavy, weighed down by the question of identity. He knew what he wanted to do—clean up the streets, fight back against the rising tide of chaos. But how? A vigilante needed more than just skills and gear. He needed a symbol.
Without thinking much, Bruce strolled down the stairs and into the garden. He always found the garden calming, and with his mind racing, maybe a walk would help him think. He followed the winding path, his boots crunching against the gravel, until something caught his eye—an old well hidden under the overgrown ivy. He had nearly forgotten it was even there.
Curious, Bruce approached the well and peered over the edge. The inside looked deeper than he remembered, pitch black like it was swallowing the light. His heart skipped a beat, not because he was scared, but because something in the back of his mind started buzzing. A memory.
He knew he couldn't just leave it. So, like the action man he is, Bruce ran back to grab his climbing gear. A few minutes later, he was harnessed up and lowering himself into the well. The cool air from below hit his face as he descended, and before long, his boots touched the bottom.
There, hidden below the surface of his childhood home, was a massive cave.
Bruce flicked on his flashlight, sweeping the beam across the stone walls. The place was enormous—dark, damp, and eerily quiet. But just as he was about to take another step, the air exploded with movement. Whoosh!
Bats. Hundreds of them. They flew past him in a flurry of wings and squeaks, like shadows come to life. Bruce stood frozen, watching as the creatures swarmed and then disappeared into the darkness.
And that's when it hit him—a memory from years ago. He had been just a kid, exploring the garden, when he stumbled and fell into this exact cave. The bats had swarmed him then too, their dark wings wrapping him in fear. It was that moment, that very day, that had made him afraid of the creatures for so long.
But now? Now, he wasn't afraid. Instead, he felt… connected. Like this was where he was supposed to be.
As the last of the bats vanished into the cave, Bruce stood there in the dark, a small smile forming on his face. He realized then that these creatures, these bats, weren't something to fear. They were survivors, just like him. Creatures of the night that thrived in the shadows but always found their way through.
This was his symbol.
He didn't need to run from his past. He didn't need to bury the fear. He needed to embrace it, harness it. The bat would be his emblem—a reminder that even in the darkest places, there was strength. That even the things that scared him could be used to strike fear into those who did wrong.
Climbing out of the cave, Bruce's mind was made up. The vigilante he would become wouldn't be just another masked man. He would be a symbol of fear for criminals—a creature of the night, unseen, unheard, but always present.
As he reached the surface and pulled off his harness, Bruce took one last look back at the well, a smirk playing at the corner of his lips. "A bat," he murmured to himself. "Yeah, that'll work."
