Chapter 66: Time Travel?

"I love the ice cream here," Evelyn was happily telling Alice about her life. "Too bad Mom doesn't like me eating too much—Hey, Aunt Jenny, add more nuts please!"

"Sure thing, little Evelyn," Aunt Jenny, who seemed equally familiar with Evelyn, agreed with a smile. Her hands didn't stop working as she made small talk, "Is this your new friend?"

"Her name is Brielle. She just moved in next door," Evelyn introduced.

"I see..." Aunt Jenny nodded, handing the ice cream to Alice and Evelyn. She reminded them, "Here's your ice cream. Hurry home after you finish, girls. Don't stay out too late—Backlund isn't very safe these days."

"Thanks, Aunt Jenny," Evelyn took the ice cream. "We've been out for a while already. We'll head back soon!"

"Thank you," Alice also accepted hers gratefully, then asked curiously, "Has something happened in Backlund recently?"

"There's a serial killer targeting women on the loose. They still haven't caught him," Aunt Jenny sighed worriedly. "Those police... hmph!"

Serial killer? Alice was startled, quickly recalling what Aunt Jenny was referring to.

Although Loen's police were far from what she remembered, mostly useless in most situations, that case had clear traces of demon worship. Alice suspected it had already been transferred to Beyonders.

But Beyonders... with their ability to communicate with spirits and divine, why hadn't they caught the culprit yet? No, that's not right... This must be some kind of ritual requirement. If that demon didn't have a way to prevent spirit communication and divination, he wouldn't dare carry out a ritual in Backlund.

I wonder what the purpose of this ritual is...

Alice looked at Evelyn, who was tugging her to leave, and silently prayed:

Everyone in Tingen City didn't end up becoming part of the price. I hope you in Backlund, and perhaps the friends I'll meet in the future, won't become the price either...

I don't want to see important people die before me again. If there must be a price, I hope I can pay it myself...

...

Alice met Klein that night.

She had expected Klein would come find her while she was out.

When she first read the diary, she was so shocked by the incredible truth that she even doubted if she was a real person. Evelyn's timely knock on her door was like a lifeline, and she grabbed onto it without thinking.

But as she gradually calmed down, she realized Klein was probably, maybe, possibly waiting for her...

After all, Klein must have considered the possibility that the other party needed to rely on her to advance to Sequence 0, even if they had no means or clues how to do so.

"Alice," Klein looked at her hesitantly, "Are you alright? I wanted to find you as soon as I recovered my spirituality, but you were out..."

"...I know," Alice sighed. She knew Klein must have tried to find her. In their similar situations, they were natural allies in a sense. "I, I thought of some things and my mind was in chaos."

"..." Klein fell silent for a moment, then suddenly put on an exaggerated smile and said, "At least you know your ending now. You can choose a way to die that you like, can't you?"

"?" Alice looked at Klein with a puzzled expression. She recalled how "Justice" had become strange after communicating with "The World", and suddenly realized she may have corrupted Klein a bit.

...Damn it.

Alice cursed inwardly, then looked at Klein expressionlessly and said, "I suddenly feel chatting in the gray fog isn't a good idea."

"Why?" Klein looked confused.

"Because I can't hit you," Alice said coldly. "Besides, you don't really think I could die by suicide, do you?"

Klein, who had just crawled out of his grave not long ago, argued, "Maybe if you commit suicide multiple times it would work? You know, I can clearly feel the difference between my two resurrections. The second time was more difficult..."

"Is that so?" Alice glanced at Klein. "That's a shame. There wasn't much difference in my two awakenings. I even felt the second time was smoother."

Klein closed his mouth.

So Alice leaned back in her chair and shared her guess: "I may be the potion ingredient for His advancement to Sequence 0."

Sequence 0 potion ingredient... But what are the ingredients for a Sequence 0 potion? Klein couldn't help but cast a worried look at Alice.

"The Blasphemy Slate... or Blasphemy Tarot Cards," Alice lowered her eyelashes and said softly, "If we can't find the ones for the 'Fate' pathway, let's look at other pathways first. There might be similarities, such as..."

Such as powerful mythical creatures, or deities themselves.

Alice didn't continue, as there were only so many possibilities. If she could think of them, Klein certainly could too.

"You..." Klein looked at Alice, not knowing what to say—because the Alice before him was as vivid a person as could be. He really couldn't imagine such a possibility.

Alice stared at the hesitant Klein for a few seconds, then suddenly smiled and said, "What if there's a kind of mythical creature... They don't have fixed bodies, but are reborn again and again in human consciousness. They might think they don't belong to the current era, but are travelers from another world..."

Before Alice could finish her idea, Klein decisively cut off her connection to the gray fog.

Back in the real world, Alice was stunned for a moment. Thinking of Klein's final expression, she suddenly felt much better.

...

Although he knew Alice was just talking nonsense, after cutting off the connection, Klein couldn't help but ponder alone in the gray fog.

What if there really was such a mythical creature?

Born in other people's consciousness, completely replacing the host's consciousness one day, living in place of the host, and believing themselves to be a transmigrator...

No, that's not right. If that were the case, how to explain this space above the gray fog?

Oh, maybe he would be resurrected here, then be born from here each time... This would be like a womb or ovary. Alice might have come from a similar place. Are they two subspecies of some mythical creature?

No, calm down, don't think anymore, can't think anymore...

To control that terrifying thought, Klein fell from the gray fog and focused on meditation.

I feel like I should at least write about Klein seeing his own fanfiction, otherwise I would have written such explosive content for nothing (opens notes) (silence)

There's one more update after dinner (lies down)
