Chapter 63: Performance and Audience
"Mr. World's" hoarse voice interrupted Alice's wandering thoughts:
"I'm looking to obtain the true roots of the Mist Treant, at least 60 ml of its corresponding sap, as well as the medullary crystals from the Elven Spring and the entire spinal fluid of the Evil-Patterned Black Panther.
"Can any of you provide these, or have relevant leads? What would you like in exchange?"
*Ah, he's planning to do some shopping!* Alice realized as she recognized the familiar material names.
Before Audrey and Alger could react, the previously silent Derrick spoke up: "I know where to find Mist Treants and can help you obtain the materials. However, I must wait until I complete my advancement, gain sufficient strength, and join the appropriate patrol team."
*As expected of the monster-filled Silver City. The little sun seems quite capable too... Though it's no wonder, I guess they don't have any Beyonders of the "Fate" pathway there.*
"World's" hoarse voice sounded again: "What do you wish to receive in return?"
*Can't he change his voice?*
Derrick answered without hesitation: "A weapon suitable for me that can enhance my combat abilities."
Alice immediately thought of the runic steel sword, and she guessed Klein must have remembered it too... *Ah, why didn't he say so earlier!* This thought occurred to both of them simultaneously.
"World" responded impassively: "I will seek a weapon that meets your requirements as soon as possible. Shall this transaction be witnessed by Mr. Fool?"
Klein's main body then nodded slightly.
*He's really good at acting...* Alice marveled at the scene.
At this point, Audrey glanced at Derrick and reminded him: "Except for the Mist Treant sap, the materials Mr. World is requesting are all non-beyonder materials corresponding to Sequence 7, with an approximate value between 500 to 700 pounds."
"The potion formula for Sequence 7 is around 800 pounds," Alger added.
*I wonder how he's translating the word "pounds"...* Alice thought silently, knowing that the little sun was speaking in the language of giants and that their current conversation relied entirely on Mr. Fool's simultaneous interpretation.
"I understand," Derrick nodded slightly, then added in a low voice, "Thank you."
The fake "World" maintained his gloomy style, offering no comment on the previous exchange. He turned his gaze towards Audrey and Alger, not forgetting Alice.
After a few seconds of contemplation, Audrey said:
"The potion formula for 'Psychiatrist' and its corresponding non-beyonder materials... This is Sequence 7 of the 'Spectator' pathway.
"You can gather information first, no need to rush into purchasing. Wait until I have leads on the Evil-Patterned Black Panther and the Elven Spring medullary crystals before taking action. Um... if you're willing to exchange these for pounds, you can buy them at any time."
*Miss "Justice" is really wealthy.* Recalling the 15,000-pound bounty, Alice couldn't help but marvel.
"The Hanged Man" Alger pondered:
"The potion formula for Sequence 6 'Wind-blessed' of the 'Sailor' pathway. This is more expensive than all the non-beyonder materials you need combined.
"If you can find it, you should consider what additional compensation you can offer.
"I can't guarantee that I'll be able to collect those materials for you, even one of them, so you don't need to spend anything in advance."
*Oh? He doesn't plan to obtain advancement materials from the church? He... he doesn't want the church to discover that he already knows about the acting method!*
Alice quickly realized Alger's intention and gave him a meaningful look. She then said to the fake "World": "I'll try my best to help you collect materials when I have free time."
Alger looked at Alice thoughtfully.
"Alright," "World" replied in a low voice, then continued, "I have another request."
"World" looked around and said: "I hope to obtain information on all the fallen nobles in the Loen Kingdom, including their current addresses. The more detailed, the better."
*This sounds like Miss "Justice's" area of expertise... But what does he need this for? Is he investigating something?*
Audrey was taken aback upon hearing this. She scrutinized the member at the far end of the bronze long table once more and probed: "What do you intend to do?"
"World" laughed hoarsely: "You need not worry. I'm merely searching for some things and won't cause them any harm. On this point, I can swear with Mr. Fool as witness."
*Isn't that still just you saying whatever you want? Come to think of it... It wasn't obvious with "Diviner," but "Clown" and "Magician" are full of performative elements. The abilities of "Faceless" and "marionettes" aren't clear yet, but they also sound like they have a performative aspect...*
*If the later stages of this pathway really are Circus Master... No, even if it's not Circus Master, this pathway sounds like it was born for "performance," and a performance always needs an "audience"...*
*But the abilities of "performance" naturally counter the observational abilities of the "audience"... Eh, it sounds like a love-hate relationship between pathways?*
Audrey's voice interrupted Alice's thoughts: "I know some information about fallen nobles, but it's not detailed, specific, or comprehensive enough. I'll need some time to refine it, probably three or four days. Is that alright?"
"No problem," "World" chuckled in a low voice. "What reward would you like? I can currently offer: some secret histories from the Fourth Epoch, knowledge about certain extraordinary pathways, and a few formulas. However, to be frank, I don't believe the information about those fallen nobles is equivalent to Sequence 8 or Sequence 7 potion formulas. Heh, if you have other requests, I'll try to fulfill them."
"I'd like to hear about knowledge of certain extraordinary pathways, but only those I don't already know about," Audrey replied after a moment's thought. "Respected Mr. Fool, could you be the judge of this?"
"Certainly," Klein answered calmly.
"Then let's communicate privately," Audrey looked towards "World."
At this point, Klein lightly tapped the table twice, and Audrey and "World" were pulled into a discussion group.
Within the discussion group.
Klein nodded downwards, indicating that they were now in a private conversation.
"World" looked at Audrey and asked in his usual hoarse voice: "What do you know about the Witches' Cult?"
Recalling the information she had once bought at great expense, Audrey cautiously gave a brief answer: "I know what they worship, which era they originated from, what extraordinary pathways they possess, and the tendencies of their upper echelons. I also know the names and effects of their potions up to Sequence 7."
"World" laughed grimly: "It seems you already know about the effects of the witch potions?"
"Yes," Audrey paused. She had actually felt some admiration for witches before, as she didn't yet know about the existence of "Pleasure Witches" or their evil acting method. But there was no need to tell "World" about this. "If that's what you wanted to say, I already know about it."
