Chapter 50: The Brave Bar

Alice, young and naive, felt a sense of uncertainty about the future path of wild extraordinary individuals. "It seems that ordinary ways of making money are completely insufficient to support the consumption of an extraordinary person," she mused.

As twilight fell, Alice stepped into the Brave Bar. The establishment had just opened for business and had not yet reached its peak hours. Nevertheless, Alice could still smell the strong aroma of malt beer.

The good news was that, likely due to the small number of patrons, the bar wasn't particularly lively at the moment. Alice didn't detect many strange odors, and the noise level was still tolerable. Even so, she couldn't help but wrinkle her brow in discomfort.

Her own demeanor, which stood out in stark contrast to the bar's atmosphere, clearly drew the attention of several patrons. Some of the gazes made her feel nauseous.

Alice made a mental note to remember to change her outfit the next time she visited such a place.

Despite her discomfort, the bar truly opened Alice's eyes - especially the rat-catching dog competitions and underground boxing matches. Such things were clearly absent from Shen Yinghuan's memories, at most appearing in descriptions from online novels she had read. But there was an enormous difference between written descriptions and witnessing such scenes in person. If Alice hadn't remembered the advice to "use luck sparingly and avoid squandering it," she might have considered trying to make money through gambling.

After all, "Lucky One" sounded like a sequence well-suited for gambling - though at this point, Alice was unaware of the even more gambling-appropriate "Winner" sequence that existed further down the line.

Approaching the bartender, Alice spoke up before he could say anything: "I'm looking for Kaspar Kanning."

The bartender, having lost a potential sale, showed little disappointment. Alice clearly didn't look like a typical bar patron. After scrutinizing her for a few seconds, he pointed to the side and said, "In billiards room number three."

Without hesitation, Alice left the main area and walked to the door of billiards room three. She raised her hand to knock gently, but the door creaked open before she could.

Inside, two men holding pool cues paused their game and looked towards Alice, who was still standing at the doorway with her hand raised.

Alice stopped her intended knock and lowered her hand. Drawing on the feeling she experienced each time she regained her memories, she shifted her mindset to one of detached observation, as if watching someone else's actions. This helped her maintain a calmer demeanor - she realized it would be difficult to become someone who could completely mask their emotions in such a short time, so she decided to use this method to control any obvious emotional displays.

Of course, this was only necessary in front of strangers.

Surprisingly, Alice slipped into her desired state with ease. She heard her own calm voice say, "I'm looking for Kaspar Kanning. 'Old Man' sent me."

The advantage of a place like this was that no one questioned your background. Neither of the two men showed any reaction to Alice's attire. The older man wearing a linen shirt looked her over and said, "Come in."

Alice guessed this must be Kaspar Kanning.

Kaspar had a large, gaping scar on his face, stretching from the corner of his right eye to the right side of his mouth. His nose was a typical alcoholic's nose, almost completely red.

Given her previous encounter with Megose, such physical features didn't shock Alice much. Moreover, she was still in that special detached state, where everything felt like watching an immersive film.

Alice calmly entered the room, and the other man smoothly exited, closing the door behind him.

Kaspar limped over and asked, "What do you want?"

"A high-powered custom revolver and 50 rounds of ammunition," Alice heard her own steady voice reply.

"Three pounds and ten soli," Kaspar quoted the price. "This is more expensive than regular weapon shops, but it includes the risks I'm taking."

Alice took out four one-pound notes and handed them over.

Kaspar looked at Alice with surprise as he verified the authenticity of the bills. "I rarely see ladies come looking for me," he remarked.

"I'm not here for small talk," Alice replied, now confident in her composure and dropping her detached state.

"Give me five minutes," Kaspar said. He placed the money on the pool table, leaned his cue against it, and limped out of the room.

Alice looked at the billiards table, both familiar and foreign to her. Familiar because such things existed on Earth, but foreign because Shen Yinghuan had never encountered one.

Alice guessed that like playing cards, this game had been introduced by Roselle. However, Alice's current feelings were vastly different from when she had discovered playing cards in Tingen. For some reason, she suddenly felt a subtle sense of melancholy.

"It's like an expatriate desperately seeking familiar traces in a foreign land, knowing they can never return home," she said to herself in Chinese.

Alice suddenly felt the urge to make herself a pair of chopsticks. Why not make Chinese food? The answer was obvious - she didn't know how to cook.

As she was lost in thought, Kaspar returned with a package and two five-soli notes.

Alice opened the brown paper package to find a beautiful silver-white handgun and 50 neatly arranged bullets.

After dry-firing the gun, Alice skillfully loaded it, placed it in its holster, and then looked at Kaspar. "If I wanted to find gatherings held by people with special abilities, where should I go?" she asked.

Kaspar's gaze suddenly turned cold.

"It seems you know," Alice smiled. "You should realize I mean no harm. Otherwise, I could simply interrogate you - you're clearly not one of them."

"Evidently, I don't have the authority to make that decision," Kaspar calmly responded.

"Ask around for me," Alice said, her expression hardening - this look was far more intimidating on her current face than it would have been before.

Kaspar was silent for a moment before telling Alice, "You're in luck. There's actually a gathering tonight... I can take you to have a look, but I can't guarantee they'll agree to let you in."

"Do I need to pay for this?" Alice inquired.

After confirming that Alice was indeed willing to pay, Kaspar answered, "Two pounds."

Alice once again took out two one-pound notes and handed them to Kaspar.

Kaspar then produced an iron mask that covered only the upper half of the face and gave it to Alice.

She put on the mask and, to Kaspar's astonishment, changed her originally brown hair and blue eyes to black hair and brown eyes. The curve of her jawline also became rounder.
