Chapter 38: Exchange of Information
"It's not necessarily so," Klein said. "We could temporarily leave Tingen City, avoiding the authorities' attention while we look for a way to change our appearances... Hmm, we should still prepare identification documents."
Looking at the still somewhat confused Klein, Alice pursed her lips and said, "Klein, Mr. Azik... you both need to be careful of 0-08 and Ince Zangwill."
The name on the wanted list immediately triggered Klein's memory. He and Azik both turned to look at Alice.
"0-08 can make written stories come true," Alice explained softly. "Ince Zangwill used 0-08 to create coincidences. His target should be the Night Watchers' headquarters in Tingen City... maybe something inside the headquarters?"
"The ashes of Saint Selena!" With the information complete, Klein immediately thought of the answer.
Alice looked at Klein in confusion. Meeting her gaze, Klein explained, "Ince Zangwill is a failed 'Gatekeeper,' and behind the Chanis Gate in Tingen City are the ashes of Saint Selena. She was a Sequence 4 Saint of the 'Sleepless' pathway during her lifetime..."
"So, 'Gatekeeper' is Sequence 5 of the 'Sleepless' pathway?" Alice guessed.
"No," Klein continued to explain, "'Gatekeeper' is Sequence 5 of the 'Corpse Collector' pathway. Similar sequences can be interchanged at higher sequences..."
Alice suddenly understood Ince Zangwill's goal—he needed Saint Selena's ashes to ascend to a demigod!
After confirming that Klein was not as naive as Alice in this regard and would not recklessly expose their resurrection to the Night Watchers, Azik left with the warning to "be careful of 0-08 and Ince Zangwill."
Left behind, Alice and Klein looked at each other in silence.
The earlier sudden events had diluted their emotions. They hadn't even had time to sort out each other's situations until Mr. Azik left. Only then did Alice remember the goddess's warning and Klein's different state upon waking.
"Have you seen the goddess?" Alice asked softly.
"No, why do you ask suddenly?" Klein looked at Alice in confusion.
"Well... because I suddenly remembered that the reasons for our resurrection might not be the same," Alice propped her chin and looked at Klein, revealing something she hadn't told Azik. "Someone... no, some unknown existence erased the part of my fate where I died."
Klein was slightly stunned. He speculated that his resurrection was due to the mysterious palace, and he might have already resurrected once before. But how did Alice know such detailed information?
"The goddess told me that before I woke up in this body, some unknown existence erased the traces of the original owner's fate," Alice explained, seeing Klein's puzzled expression.
The description of "this body" made Klein frown slightly, feeling a subtle discomfort. But his attention was more focused on another matter: "The goddess?"
"Yes, the goddess." Alice looked at Klein and made the sign of the Crimson Moon on her chest—this was the most sincere prayer she had made since waking up.
Klein's pupils contracted slightly. They both understood what this meant—Alice had been a follower of the Night since she woke up. But he had another question: "Woke up?"
Alice looked at Klein, recalling the enclosed, tightly wrapped space, the absurd death of Megose, the initial lucky one, and the unclear voice she heard before Megose died. She responded in a distant, confused voice, "I suspect that before this, I woke up somewhere else."
Without waiting for Klein to respond, Alice continued, "You are no longer a Night Watcher, so I can tell you the answer to the previous question."
Klein was momentarily stunned before realizing what Alice was referring to. A faint sadness surfaced in his heart, but Alice's voice quickly dispelled it: "Have you heard of the Law of Indestructibility of Extraordinary Characteristics?"
"What is that?" Klein asked cooperatively.
"Extraordinary characteristics cannot be destroyed, cannot be reduced, and can only transfer from one carrier to another... Honestly, it sounds a lot like the law of conservation of mass and energy," Alice quipped, expressing her initial reaction to the law.
Klein ignored Alice's quip, softly chewing on the words, feeling a sense of foreboding: "Could the substitute material be..."
"The remnants of an Extraordinary after death can serve as the main material for potions... just like Ince Zangwill needs Saint Selena's ashes." Alice calmly filled in the last piece of the puzzle.
"So, how do you know this?" Klein felt an even stronger sense of foreboding.
The familiar smile on Alice's face seemed to confirm his suspicion. He heard Alice's voice: "When I first woke up, a Sequence 7 Lucky One fell to his death in front of me."
"Lucky One, fell to his death?" Klein repeated the words. He could fully imagine what happened next—Alice consumed the Extraordinary characteristic, accidentally becoming an Extraordinary herself. But he couldn't understand why a Lucky One would fall to his death.
"Do you know how Megose died?" Alice asked, seeing his incredulous expression.
Hearing the question, Klein suddenly remembered that this fellow countryman and former colleague had met Ince Zangwill—this meant Megose was dead. But she clearly didn't have the ability to kill the child in Megose's belly, so he had to ask, "How did she die?"
"After killing you, Megose lunged at me..." Alice recounted the bizarre scene, "Then she tripped, and as she fell, the bone knife happened to be horizontal at her belly, slicing her in half..."
The absurd answer once again brought silence to the scene. They looked at each other, reading the gravity in each other's eyes.
After a long while, Alice forced a smile and said in a self-deprecating tone, "On the bright side, at least I can go to Pritz Harbor to find the Extraordinary of the 'Monster' pathway, right?"
"I think I suddenly understand what a 'Clown' is." Looking at Alice's smile, Klein suddenly said.
