“Major McDowell, this is Mr. David Spruille, Ms. Andrews’ brother-in-law.” The ensign turned stiffly to present David.
“Well, we certainly are glad you’re here.” Shirley’s smile was the first David had seen since he had reached the facility. From the first sailor who had meticulously checked his identification to this last ensign, he hadn’t seen one sign that anyone had anything good happening in their lives. Shirley turned to the ensign and dismissed him without a word. He saluted and turned neatly on his heel and walked away without a further word.
“Come on with me. Your wife will be very glad to see you.” As she came around the desk she whispered, “Get your wife to eat something. I know she hasn’t had a good meal all day, even though she swore she had breakfast. My sources in the cafeteria said she left everything right on her plate.”
“Is everything all right?” David was suspicious. If Lori wasn’t eating, maybe Cam had taken a turn for the worse.
