“Cameron is awake,” Maya whispered to her. Now, all three were sitting around Cam.
Beatrice laid a hand on Cam’s leg. “Does this hurt?” she asked, afraid to touch anything
“Everything hurts.” Cam told her softly.
“You were so brave. I would have screamed at the first lash,” Beatrice said with admiration in her voice.
“Brave…or stupid,” Cam commented, her eyes still shut.
“Sometimes they are the same,” Rosa advised, patting her shoulder.
“Raul and Tomas brought what medications they could find and Rosa made a poultice from some leaves to help you,” Maya told her.
“From the coca leaves?” was Cam’s immediate question.
“No. I know what other herbs are here,” Rosa answered, with a smile in her voice. “Tomas went with me into the forest to gather them. The coca leaves will help once the healing starts. Their oil will numb the breaks in the skin.”
“You should have let me die,” Cam whispered. She was still hyperventilating, unable to catch her breath.
