Capítulo 5: Power

I felt a knot tighten in my stomach as I stared at the broken tap in my hand. What had I done? The weight of my aunt's fury hung in the back of my mind like a shadow, a reminder of the fear she had instilled in me. I couldn't shake the memories of being locked away for the smallest mistakes. My heart raced as I made my way down the narrow hallway, each step echoing my growing anxiety.

The old man's bedroom door was slightly ajar. I took a deep breath and pushed it open, finding him seated at his desk, cleaning his glasses with a gentle touch. "Sir?" I called out, my voice trembling.

He looked up, his brow furrowing in curiosity. "Maxwell? Everything alright?"

I hesitated, anxiety flooding my veins. "Um, I— I broke the tap in the bathroom. It just… came apart in my hand." I expected his face to twist in anger, a disappointment like the ones I had grown used to.

Instead, he chuckled softly, shaking his head. "Oh, it's not your fault, kid. That tap hasn't been used in ages. No wonder it gave out. Don't worry about it; it's an easy fix."

Relief washed over me, flooding the corners of my mind that had been cluttered with fear. "I'm sorry," I mumbled, a smile creeping onto my face. "Thanks for understanding." I turned to leave, buoyed by the old man's kindness. "I'll just go freshen up."

As I walked back to my room, I caught a glimpse of my hand, still gripping the twisted metal fitting. Confusion creased my brow. How had that tap come apart so easily? I dismissed the thought, telling myself I was overthinking things.

After splashing some water from a bucket onto my face and brushing my teeth, I decided a walk would do me good. The weather looked promising, and the fresh air might help clear my mind.

Feeling lighter, I strode toward the old man's room again, eager to share my good mood. But as I approached, I noticed him on the phone, deep in conversation. I didn't want to interrupt, so I slipped out of the apartment, taking the stairs down.

As I stepped outside, a soft smile spread across my face. The sun bathed the street in warm light, and the air was fresh with the scent of blooming flowers. I walked through the gate, feeling a sense of freedom.

But then, I bumped into a massive figure, a man with a scowl etched across his face. "Watch where you're going, kid!" he barked, towering over me like a dark cloud.

My heart sank. "I— I'm sorry," I stammered, taking a step back.

The man sneered, clearly unconvinced. "What's a little brat like you doing here anyway?"

I lowered my head and refrained from uttering another word convinced defending myself won't do me any good. "You dare ignore me?!" he yelled. I felt small under his glare, fear creeping back in. Just as he raised his hand, ready to strike, I thought, *No!* Instinctively, I raised my arms to protect my face, bracing for the blow.

But instead, a gust of wind surged around me, freezing the man's arm mid-swing. I watched in shock as he stumbled backward, landing on his butt with a surprised yelp. He scrambled to his feet, confusion in his eyes, and bolted away, leaving me standing there, bewildered.

"What just happened?" I whispered to myself. My heart raced, a mix of adrenaline and confusion swirling inside me. I turned to head back home, feeling more unsettled than ever.

When I entered the apartment, I found the old man pacing anxiously, still on the phone. I caught snippets of his conversation—something about a lost child. My heart sank again. Had he thought I had run away?

Just as I was about to explain everything, my thoughts swirling with the strange events of the day, something odd happened. A flickering window appeared in front of me, shimmering like a hologram.

**ERROR.**

Time froze around me. The old man's conversation had paused, his lips had stopped midway. I felt trapped, caught in a moment that defied explanation, the world around me had paused in an eerie stillness.

What was happening? My mind raced, confusion and fear battling within me as I struggled to grasp the reality of it all.
