With the snowstorm outside raging on, Aoni's ragged breath echoed through the cave as he collapsed on the bed while a concerned Glacia nestled up beside him.
The last 9 hours had been a literal hell, taxing not only his body but also Aoni's mind. On more than one instance, he had found himself screaming and thrashing about on the floor as he felt bones, skin, muscles, tendons, and organs be pulled, stretched, and shredded time and time again.
It was almost as if he'd been broken down like clay and remolded from the ground up, but as Aoni lay there staring up at the ceiling and gently petting his summon, the Lad couldn't help but feel it was totally worth every ounce of pain he had been subjected to.
After all, the numbers spoke for themselves.

For starters, Aoni finally understood the point costs of leveling up his Stats, and it wasn't until he increased the Speed Stat that he was able to recognize the pattern.
1.5 from G- to G
2.75 from G to G+
8.5 from G+ to F-
Total expenditure going from G- to F- = 12.75 points.
The point values in the G-Rank were oddly familiar, and after doing the math, Aoni soon realized they matched the numbers used to determine someone's overall Rank.
It took him some time to figure it out, but eventually, Aoni concluded that with each increase in Stage came a multiplier, while each Rank before is added to the sum beforehand.
Eh…how to explain it….ok, so remember that value table I gave….
R | - | Base| + |
G | 0.5 | 1.0 | 1.25 |
F | 1.5 | 2.0 | 2.25 |
Well, as he moved up the ranks, the value of the previous Rank was added to the new one. So, to go from G- —to G, it was 1.5, then from G to G+, you'd add up the numerical value of both G- —and G with the value of G+. Like this, Aoni was able to find a number that matched what he was seeing on the Traveler's display.
This task was a pain in and of itself because he was continuously gaining more points with each upgrade.
However, the formula seemed to change the moment Aoni pushed into the first step of the F-Rank. Sure, everything before it was added together, but then an extra 2x modifier was applied.
This was something he'd noticed ahead of time in the case of Aoni's Defense and Attack stats, but he wasn't sure about it until he'd pushed his Speed up.
Aoni had spent a whopping 32.5 points, but surprisingly enough, he earned a decent amount of points in return. Each time his stats broke through to the next Stage, he'd received 5 Progress Points, and, more impressively, upon Aoni's Rank finally entering the next Stage, he obtained another 10 points, so in theory, although he had spent 32.5 points, the Lad had gained back 25.
With one hand scratching Glacia behind her ears and the other behind his head, Aoni glanced up at his TD and found it impossible not to feel overwhelmed.
'Still, it looks like I finally increased My Attribute by a step, from NULL to CF, but it only happened once my Speed Stat hit F-. There must be hidden requirements…either that or I actually used it enough to power up.' Wearing a smile, Aoni thought about how far he'd come in such a short time.
Just a day ago, things were looking bad; having a shit Potential attached to a low-Grade Attribute was practically a death sentence, or at the very least, a life destined to be nothing more than a normal mundane.
But now, the door had been swung wide open, and he not only had a summon but also surpassed the limits of his Original Potential, something which would have shackled Aoni down to a life of mediocrity.
There were ways and resources to do such a thing, but they were rare, extremely so, and, of course, expensive. Not that Aoni would have ever considered such an option in the first place; only the Richest families or higher-ups in the government had access to that kind of stuff. Then again…
Aoni's eyes drifted toward the mouth of the cave and out into the darkness beyond.
'That fruit Glacia found was able to increase my Rank Potential from G+ to F-, providing it works more than once, which is a long shot. Wouldn't I Be able to save points by chowing down on those for a while…'
"Glacia…" he said while pausing the head scratches for a moment, causing the small creature to look up at her Lord with apparent annoyance due to the lack of scratches.
"That fruit you found, do you remember where you got it?"
"Gao??" Tilting her head, Aoni noticed the lack of understanding was rearing its head yet again, so he quickly fetched his handy dandy notebook and drew his best artistic rendition of the spikey round fruit.
"Remember this?"
"Gaoo Gaoo," she said while licking her lips and patting her belly.
"Good, good, now, how many were there?"
"….."
"Sigh…" noticing a lack of response, Aoni went ahead and drew a tree, which was a pretty big assumption on his part, but he was hoping his thought was correct.
"Now, how many of them were here!" Aoni stated while pointing at the fruit, then to the top of a tree, and back at the fruit.
"Was there one?" drawing a fruit, he watched as Glacia shook her head no.
"Two?"
"Oo…gao…ooO." At two, Glacia reacted but then fell into thought as if she couldn't make up her mind, but Aoni got the gist of what it was confusing the little ball of fluff and drew a little picture of his rendition of Glacia dropping from the tree with a fruit in her hand and two more still above.
"Does this look right, Glacia?"
"OOO, OOO!" Standing up on the bed, she pointed at the tree while nodding.
'So there's two left…' Aoni thought while attempting to calm the riled-up summon.
