It usually gets busy this time of the year, just before the festival of fireworks; although the incident with the 'dick-head' earlier had left a bitter taste, but thanks to the good business which began right afterwards, Perhaps the Mrs.Verne's good wishes had really worked.
Evelyn didn’t have even an idle moment. She had to prepare fresh batches of cookies as the ones prepared by her father were charred.
As the day went by annoying incidence faded away from her mind, Evelyn knew that once she would start fearing that 'dick-head' he would try to blackmail them even more. So, it was pointless feeling low about his empty threats her father had never signed a debt bond, this shop was everything they had, Evelyn would never let anyone else acquire it at any cost. She did want to bother herself thinking about that scum bag.
Eve cheered herself up, it was good day, to begin with, it was the news of the selection at the Baking competition and then the entire evening at the café had been bustling, and they even received some advance payments for cake orders.
Late in the evening when the rush loosened up a bit, Aria and Noah dropped by, they were still in their school uniforms, "Hey, why are you both still roaming around? You both should have gone home way before. Don't you remember you need to finish the assignments by the next two days. You both have already pushed to much." Evelyn was back to her mother chicken mode, and why not, she was the one who would push Aria and Noah, sometimes she would even tutor them, or share her notes which could help improve their grades. "Oh! Come on Ms.Cute baker. Don't spoil the mood now." Aria hugged Eve tight, "Congratulations love" she kissed Eve on her cheeks as she already climbed up the aisle of kitchen, chuckling with her bright eyes she was like a baby rabbit Eve wanted to cuddle right away, "But how did you guys..." before she could finish her sentence,
Noah picked her up and took a big spin, taking her by surprise and making Eve giddy, "Hey Noah put me down, put me down already..." After several futile requests, followed frantically hitting on his shoulder, he finally put her down, "Congratulations Eve" his eyes gleamed, he was still holding her, anyone would be about sense his insanely beating heart for her, only one immune to it was Eve herself. Aria knew well Eve loved her friends but to her they were more like her family, she didn't see Noah as a man, Eve had bigger dreams, she was matured, Aria was sure she wasn't here to be a part of the world of this small town, there's a bigger world for her. On the other Noah had been falling harder for each day. She on the other hand was suppressing her feelings for him hard, she knew it was an unrequited crush. She was neither beautiful nor charming nor attractive as Evelyn, for whom every head will turn and every man's heart would beat, she was ordinary, short and round. Noah who was the best volleyball player, with a charm which can make the hearts of many girls flutter, had eyes only for Eve. Aria never had any hopes, she was happy with hanging around with him, she was happy as long as she could stay by his side. However, everytime she would find Noah looking at Eve a faint pain would penetrate her heart.
Aria loved Eve, being jealous of her was the last thing that she could do, but was scared, what if the truth gets revealed and their bubble of happiness gets busted? She didn't want anyone to get hurt. Every night she would pray for the bubble to remain intact until they graduated, "I will leave for finding a job in the city, if I leave then I won't feel hurt, and perhaps Noah will be able to make some progress with Eve, who knows she might give him a chance."
But, Aria's hopes were blown away as Eve ruffled his hair like some one would do to their younger brother, and "Thanks Noah" and the she pulled Aria's cheeks, "Thanks peanut" a name she would call her when she would get overly emotional. "We met Mrs.Verne on our way back from the ice cream parlour" the moment Aria said it, she and Noah looked at each other, "Oh snap" Noah ran outside.
Apparently when they heard about Evelyn's selection they spent their entire pocket money to purchase a special icecream cake for her, but they completely forgot about it and left it at Noah bicycle basket.
"It melted, it's all because of you dummy, couldn't you remind me?"
"Look who's talking, apparently it was your idea to put it in the basket, I was fine with carrying it with my two hands." Aria snapped while hitting on his head.
"Yes,and then rolling down like a pand in the middle of the market. Who would have carried you then? And the cake would have got wasted" Noah retorted
"Yes I knew it, it's the cake you would be worried about." Aria's voice was heavy momentarily.
"Isn't that obvious?" Noah laughed to his heart's content while pulling Aria's cheeks. However her sudden change of demeanor didn't go unnoticed by Evelyn, something was different.
"Stop it Noah. How dare you say such harsh things to our cute rabbit." Evelyn hugged her right away, Aria bit her tongue to subdue her tears, how could she even think of being jealous with this girl, her love, warmth and kindness, she was a different league, who wouldn't fall in love with her? She was really mean to even have such thoughts for once.
"Oh Eve, look how pathetic this guy is! We should completely boycott him for now onwards."
"Of course we would"
"You traitor didn't I feed you with 70% of my ice cream today. Don't you dare ignore me panda" Noah gave a bear hug from the back and they laughed while the ice cream melted away like time, Eve wondered what good deeds she had ever done to deserve such wonderful friends in her life, who would give up their entire month's allowances to celebrate her little achievement.
As a custom, the eateries at market at Mignos remains open till the late hours just before the festival, but the bakery was a bit too far from the prime location, so there were hardly any visitors during this time. It was usually her father who manages the café during such late hours.
Her father usually manages the cafe at such late hours, however it was talking him more than a usual time to return, maybe he is stuck with some overtime. After completing her book-keeping for the day, Evelyn decided to practice baking a miniature cake, in the final round of the there would be different stages, one of the challenges would to bake her specialty. Evelyn already knew she would prepare something unique, which would have a touch of her native place, she decided on the Royalty cake.
As the story goes, it was something which bears the pride to have been first prepared at the royal cuisine of Magnolia. It had been one of the emperor's favorite. Over the years, it has been known as the royalty cake and only the noble ladies knew about the secret recipe, who have carefully handed it down over the generations. Evelyn laughed at the idea that even they were a part of the nobility once. However, it was because of that reason, she got to learn how to make the Royalty cake. The process involved in baking it did justice to the very name, for it was a combursome method. Evelyn had a nack for baking, and she had mastered the art of baking variety of cakes, cupcakes, cookies right from her middle school days. However, every time she tried a hand on the Royalty cake, she failed miserably, there was always something was missing, a secret ingredient which she couldn't point out, but she could feel it. Baking was an emotion for her, and she was extremely zealous and touchy about perfecting it.
"I have to perfect it this time," Evelyn rolled up her sleeves and turned on the radio.
