[Daily login reward received:

Gained Psychic Null Passive/Active skill.]

"MOTHERFU-!" I nearly scream aloud in the Archive Area before clamping my mouth shut.

There's a reason for my surprise at the sudden gain of this double-edge skill. Even with my limited knowledge of the 40k universe, I do know that a Blank or a Psychic Null is basically the direct antithesis to Psykers and Chaos. In the tumultuous verse that is 40k, being a Blank is like having a permanent buff against anything Unholy. However, the blank, in a way, is anything but Holy.

Blanks are born with no connection to the Warp at all and generate no psychic presence in Warpspace, essentially making them Soulless. A Blank's proximity to someone with even a modicum of psychic ability can also be quite painful or even lethal to the Psyker, especially to psychically sensitive beings such as the Aeldari otherwise known as Space Elves to the unintellectual. Even ordinary, non-psychic individuals categorized by the Imperium as Sigma grade and below in psychic ability can be affected by a Blank's Anti-Psyker aura, as they radiate a sense of unnatural "wrongness" that makes all other living creatures extremely uncomfortable and uneasy in their presence. People in the presence of a Blank will often harbor intensely hostile feelings towards the Blank for reasons that they cannot explain. As a result, most Blanks do not live long as the feelings of hatred and distaste they generate among even non-psychic individuals means they have few friends and many enemies. This glaring negative is why I am more annoyed than happy with the skill I received. The last thing I need is to be alienated and be yoinked to some Emperor forsaken Black Ships belonging to the Sisters of Silence.

Fortunately, it appears my luck still holds up nicely. Emperor blesses me once again, I guess.

[Psychic Null passive:

Immune to direct psychic effects. Immune to Demonic possession and spiritual corruption by the forces or agents of Chaos.

Projects an aura that dampens any psychic or Warp-related powers occurring within the aura's area of effect. (Aura radius scales with the skill bearer's willpower and can be increased by actively deploying the skill to full effect.)

Passively deal damage and increase damage dealt to beings composed of pure psychic energy such as entities native to the Warp like Daemons.

Psychic Nulls Active:

Massively improve the passive effects.

Induced mental burden on the skill bearer. The effect is mitigated by the skill Debuff Immunity.

Acclimating with the skill for a prolonged period will reduce the mental load. Please train hard, skill bearer!

Psychich Nulls special modifier:

The skill bearer does not impart discomfort on non-hostile entities unless the skill bearer is willing.]

Yeah, I basically received all the goodies with very minimal cons. Glory to the Emperor? Honestly, the Daily Login System is more or less a Daily Gacha and today is possibly one of the best Gacha pulls I've ever had. That said, Psychic Null is also another skill that I will have to take some time to get used to, much like Battle Meditation. I sigh, resigning myself to endure another round of headaches to get the skills up to par. Well, I will just leave the trouble to future me. For now, I better finish what I have come here for.

In the Grand Archive of Kasr Derth, I, a lone Guardswoman of Cadia, can be seen perusing the many data slates and traditional dusty tomes. In a place that is only frequented by the most intellectual of the Imperium, e.g. Tech-Priests and nobles, my presence here is seemingly out of place. Yet, the Lexmechanics of the Derth Grand Archive are used to my presence. Ever since a young age, the orphaned me has wandered daily into the Archive in search of precious knowledge of the verse. Over time, the Lexmechanics and Tech-Priest have come to regard me as a nascent seeker of knowledge, seeing me as a young initiated on the path of enlightenment by the Omnisiah's will. I silently accept the title, seeing no harm in doing so.

From a young girl to a Guardswoman, I make time to visit the Archive whenever I can. I accrue knowledge on each occasion and using said knowledge, I trade ideas with the intellectuals of the Archives. On each occasion, there will always be a gathering of Tech-Priests and Lexmechanics around me, a young girl. While it may seem off-putting at a glance, the gathering is where brilliant ideas and innovations are and will be born. My combined knowledge from the life before and this one presented a fascinatingly fresh point of view. Thus making the suggestions that are so mundane to me can become invaluable to breakthrough bottlenecks suffered by the Tech-Priests and Lexmechanicus. This is not even mentioning the meta information I gain from the System. If I share all of them in full, the Adeptus Mechanicus will have its head turn, if I am not accused of heresy, of course.

The point is, I have built up a friendly reputation with the Cadian-branch of Adeptus Mechanicus. All of this is attributed to my sincere thirst for knowledge and respectfulness to the way of the Omnisiah. In short, I am committed to being a good girl and not offending the worldview of the Tech-Priests which is surprisingly easy in my humble opinion. Funnily enough, I was offered to join the Mechanicus by a Magos. Apparently, I've scored enough brownie points that the local Mechanicus branch deems I am fit for further investment. Nevertheless, I turn them down, not too keen on wading into a cult just yet and disliking body alteration. The latter is because my System can outdo the Mechanicus, given enough time and offer.

I do not want skeletonized mechanical arms, thank you very much.

Regardless, it's fortunate that I can leverage my favorable impression with the Adeptus Mechanicus on something else, namely my current project. I do not need to be an avid 40k lover to understand that a Lasgun is more often than not a flashlight against the terrors in this universe. It's why Lasgun is only effective en-mass, and even then threats like Carnifex or a Chaos Space Marine can just shrug off the las bolts. It's why I am here in the Archive today, pulling up the necessary information to complete the blueprint of a revised Kantrael Pattern Lasrifle. My intention is made clear to the Mechanicus of the Grand Archive. It's why they're gathering around me, immensely curious about the blueprint I have just added the finishing touches.

"Done." I announce, cleaning the makeshift workstation I have before unfurling the blueprint in all of its entirety. "Respectable priests, please take a look at my design and comment your honest thoughts on my lackluster attempt."

I step aside, letting the Tech-Priests step closer, using their flesh and mechanical eyes in conjunction to scan my papers. With how fast they have processed information daily, the Tech-Priests take nearly no time at all before voicing their thoughts.

"Intriguing, the efficiency of the power supply is improved by 36.69%."

"The increase in efficiency reduces the strain on the focusing crystal while simultaneously allowing for higher reliability and shot counts."

"The barrel is shortened, making a place for a module in front of the focusing crystal."

"The shortened barrel does not negatively impede the effectiveness of the lasrifle. Instead, the new module exists to drastically improve the accuracy and the lethality of the rifle at all ranges."

"The accuracy is comparable to that of a Long-las, while the damaging potential is approaching that of a bolt round. However, the biggest improvement is in armor penetration. Presented in this configuration, a Lasrifle stands a significantly higher chance to go through the hide of Tyrannid threats or even Space Marine armor."

"It stands to say that the addition of this new module will improve the firepower of a single Guardsman by 50%. If the new Lasrifle is adopted on a large scale, Imperial Guard regiments will see their firepower being improved by order of magnitude."

"This module, codified as Twister Module, will twist the Las bolts of the rifle, turning them into energy drills that can dig through armor while improving the coherency of the bolts. Such a fascinating idea while still remaining simple enough for it to be retrofitted to pre-existing Lasguns! We need only shorten the barrel to make place for the new improvements!"

"We can even incorporate the Twister Module into large las designs! Imagine the possibility of stronger, and more effective Lascannons for battle tanks and lance batteries on voidships! It will be minimal when retrofitted on a small scale while revolutionary on a major scale!"

"Good Ein! Just how have you come up with such a brilliant design!?"

At first, the priests are calm and collected. Yet, as the revelation of my design's potential finally settles in, they are shaking with obvious excitement from their mechanical and remaining biological parts. I honestly find the sight to be quite funny. However, facing their genuine appreciation, I just scratched my cheek.

"Actually, I am inspired by you all. The brainstorming sessions we have all this time have encouraged me to search for ways to improve the Lasrifle the Guard Regiments use. It's then that I study hard to break the bottleneck of a design so perfected over time by the Mechanicus. Try as I am, the Kantrael Pattern Lasrifle has reached the peak of what can be achieved as a mass-production weapon. It is a solid and rugged weapon that remains reliable and adequately precise in almost any environment and requires very little maintenance in the harshest of conditions. The only avenue to improve is its lethality."

Some of the Tech-Priests nod, understanding the monumental task I have picked for myself at the tender age of 16. I then continue. "I decided to home in on how to improve the firepower of the Kantrael Pattern, ultimately figuring out how to improve the energy efficiency of the design. However, this will only further increase the reliability and available shots of the Lasrifle, not really what I am aiming for. It's due to this that I visit the Archive and discuss with you a lot these past few weeks in search of a breakthrough."

I then chuckle. "Well, surprisingly, I did get a breakthrough, or an enlightenment in my case?"

My wry question raises some eyebrows at the way I put it. Breakthrough and enlightenment are what the Tech-Priests seek every day in their lives. To hear me seriously say that I achieved one in my personal quest is something to be respected in their eyes, mechanical or not. I go on to explain.

"While our discussions have guided me on the correct path, it's Magos Hedagine's and Enginseer Zodasmal's who have shown me the way forward." I then bow at the named pair and the other Tech-Priests. "Thank you, all of you, for allowing me the chance to contribute to the Imperium. As for the specifics, it was Magos Hedagine's talk with Enginseer Zodasmal about acquiring a better drill head to penetrate the hard carapace of a Tyrannid specimen that inspired me. It's with this that I started researching the feasibility of turning the normal pulse of energy of a Lasrifle into a more damaging drilling energetic bolt. Ultimately, I came up with the Twister Module, something that can be easily retrofitted into all Las designs alongside the reworked energy supply. If upscaled, the upgrades I have drawn can be applied to larger Las weapons like what Artisan Yelt has said."

After my short speech, the Mechanicus priesthood just stared at me. I admit, I am a bit unnerved by the sight of their mechadendrites going stock still in muted shock. Ultimately, the Magoses snap out of their trance first, with their arms and mechadendrites throwing high in jubilant.

"Unbelievable! To think a non-initiated can be blessed by the Omnissiah!"

"Good Ein, are you sure you do not want to join the Mechanicus!?"

"Blessed with both opportunity and a pure appreciation of knowledge, I am curious how far you will go, young Ein!"

"Perhaps she is the perspective we need all along? Ein is a true intellectual, yet she also treks the martial path. She is perhaps one of the few able to master them both at a young age. Her origin as a Guardswoman and studious can offer us unique insights."

"You speak wrongly, Lexmachinc 0-Plarc. Ein already has given much help in our own pursuits. It's safe to say that if the Omnissiah has blessed her, then she has also shared the blessing with us in turn!"

"Hail the Omnissiah! They who have blessed us with such a profound opportunity!'

"Hail the Omnissiah!" The slogan is shouted by all of the Priests. Yeah... This is what I got for dealing with a literal cult.

That said, of the time I spent in the presence of these modified men and women, I can't help but view them as just humans if not sapience beings. They are flawed, yet they are also capable of doing good in their own way, just like the Guardsmen.

Ultimately, the commotion dies down. It's with haste that they prompt me to share the desire with them so they can spread it beyond the confines of Cadia. I see why not as sharing the design of the Twister Module and improved Kantrael Pattern Lasrifle will be a boon for the Imperium. I do surprise them when I opt to include the Cadian Mechanicus as a major contributor to this design, rather than taking the credit all for myself as the sole maker. In a way, I do speak the truth that without these Tech-Priests, I wouldn't have made the Twister Module even with my accrued knowledge and gifts from the System. I also do not need material compensation, but I do want to improve relation with the Mechanicus as a whole for future plans.

With how much the Adeptus Mechanicus prizes efficiency, they give me the timetable of a week before the first batch of the improved Lasrifles can be assembled for testing. It will take anywhere from two weeks to three weeks to upscale the Twister Module for things like Lascannons before creating another testing batch. The timeline being given is an understandable one in my opinion. Due to my lack of crafting experience, I will respectfully leave it for the Tech-Priests to work their craft zealously. I do not want to intrude where I am not needed as I am still just a young Guardswoman, albeit somewhat talented.

I do smile wryly when a Magos seems pleasantly surprised at my hands-off approach, advising me to take more pride in my design by crafting it personally. I reply, highlighting my lack of expertise and unknowing of the rites performed by the Tech-Priests, it may offend the Mechanicus and the Machine Spirit of the weapon if I am to careless interject. The Magos then remember that I am not even an initiate of the cult, so he nods pleasantly while apologizing for speaking out of turn. Still, my explanation seems to have improved my standing in the Cadian Mechanicus even more, so that's a plus.

When we go on to talk and hypothesize about upscaling the Twister Module to Battle Tank level though, someone outside of the Mechanicus sphere of influence arrives. Wearing black power armor and red vestments, the figure is noticeably female due to the how the armor's breastplate is designed. Stopping in front of me, her form towering, the tall lady unlocks and reveals her helmet. It's soon revealed that this is a Sister of Battle, the markings on her suit denounce her allegiance to the Order of Our Martyred Lady.

Now that her helmet is removed, I am greeted by a familiar face with long black hair, and a pair of shiny light purple eyes, her face is so beautiful that any weaker-will human will be blushing by now. Not me, however, I move to perform the Aquila sign to showcase my respect to the Sister of Battle.

"Milady Canoness Superior." I greet her.

The Sister of Battle looks at me with a calm face before smiling, her armored hand moving to pat my head in a familiar gesture. I sputter. "M-Milady!?"

The Sister of Battle chuckles mischievously. "It's been a while since we last saw each other, Ein. And this is how you greeted your Mama?"

Everyone, meets Canoness Superior aka Leader of the Order of Our Martyred Lady, Elyzabeth Fortier. By the way, she is also my adopted mother, and she is quite mad that I did not hug her in greetings like I used to. Joy, oh joy. Disclaimer, we are not estranged, it's just that I've grown away from my young impulses during my mother's time spending off-world on holy duty. Also, don't ask me how I got adopted by a Sister of Battle of all people. I was spending time in one of the orphanages sponsored by the Order of Our Martyred Lady like usual when I got yoinked by the Canoness Superior to be her daughter.

It. Just. Bloody. Happened!

When asked, Mother just said that I have a spirit that seems to tick all of her boxes. I've come to fear asking any further than that. Before you ask, it's my own volition that I chose to join the Imperial Guard on Cadia instead of going through the Schola Progenium for orphans. Back then, I was still pitifully weak physically to survive the Schola Progenium supervised by the Order of Our Martyred Lady. It was only when I joined the Guard that I started to become stronger in every aspect. By this point though, I don't think I can join the Sisters of Battle. Not that I will want to because joining the Order means a high chance of being deployed outside of Cadia, thus ruining many of my plans. Fortunately, Mother seems to understand my wish and desire, somehow, so she lets me live on Cadia while going on her missions.

It seems she has returned for now though. Enough thinking to myself, Mother is still waiting for my reply.

"Welcome back, Moth-" "Mama~!" "Welcome back, Mama!" I swiftly change my tune when Mama's eyes narrow dangerously.

In her words, me calling her Mother makes her feel old... Seriously, do females in Warhammer still feel conscious about their ages even in the 41st millennia? When Mama smiles brightly while continuing to pat my head in a circle of Tech-Priests, I can't help but wonder:

What is even my life nowadays?
