"Let me go! Let me go, you perverted lunatic!"
It all happened too suddenly, like the final straw that broke the camel's back. The fear and anxiety that had been building up in Han Wenxue over the past few days finally erupted. She lashed out like a crazed leopard, clawing and striking wildly.
"Hiss!"
Chen Yi drew in a sharp breath as her nails raked across his arm, leaving several deep scratches. Blood seeped out slowly, staining his skin.
"I'm saving your life!"
But Han Wenxue, in her frenzied state, couldn't hear a word he said. Instead of stopping, her struggles grew fiercer, her voice rising into a cacophony of curses and screams. "You pervert! Let me go, you disgusting freak! Help! Somebody help me!"
Once again, Chen Yi was reminded of how terrifyingly unhinged this woman could become when she fought back. Left with no other choice, he clamped a hand over her mouth.
But this only made their position even more compromising. Han Wenxue was now sprawled across his lap, one of his hands covering her mouth while the other accidentally pressed against her chest. In their struggle, her skirt had ridden up to her thighs, revealing a glimpse of black lace beneath. The scene was undeniably suggestive and ripe for misunderstanding.
"Mmph! Mmph!"
With her mouth firmly covered, Han Wenxue's wide, panic-filled eyes stared up at him. Her muffled cries sounded like a mix of threats and pleas.
Chen Yi couldn't care less about what she was trying to say. His priority was to get her out of the car before things spiraled further out of control. But how? He couldn't very well tie her up and carry her out—doing so would only confirm every misunderstanding.
In that fleeting moment, his mind raced through countless possibilities. Frustrated and out of options, he even considered throwing her out onto the road and walking away, leaving her fate to chance.
"Han Wenxue, listen to me carefully. This is the last time I'm helping you. After this, we'll go our separate ways and have nothing to do with each other. But for now, you need to follow my instructions. Otherwise, whether you make it through today alive is still uncertain. Do you hear me?"
Chen Yi's voice was sharp and unyielding, his words blunt and devoid of any courtesy.
"Mmph! Mmph!"
Han Wenxue nodded repeatedly, like a frightened chick pecking at grain. Though her mouth was covered, her muffled sounds seemed to indicate agreement.
At this moment, Han Wenxue's legs were straddling Chen Yi's lap, her pale, sensitive thighs pressed tightly against him. The intimate contact made her feel utterly humiliated. Her mind was a chaotic mess, too overwhelmed to process whether Chen Yi's words were true or not. All she could think about was escaping this deranged man and reporting him to the police as soon as possible.
Seeing her nod in agreement, Chen Yi released her and said, "Get out of the car now. Stay close to me—"
"Help! Somebody help me! This man is a pervert!"
The moment Han Wenxue regained her freedom, she ignored his instructions and immediately screamed for help at the top of her lungs.
"Goddammit! I must be insane to try saving someone like you!"
Chen Yi's patience snapped. He flung open the car door, ready to leave and wash his hands of her fate entirely.
"Boom! Screech! Crash!"
Before he could step out, a thunderous noise erupted ahead. The sound of metal colliding, tires screeching, and people screaming filled the air.
The massive fuel tanker that had been heading toward them suddenly veered off course, crashing through the guardrail. It crushed a small sedan in its path into a mangled heap of scrap metal. The driver inside didn't even have time to scream before being reduced to a bloody pulp.
The tanker's driver, his eyes bloodshot and his face twisted with madness, showed no intention of slowing down. Instead, he slammed down on the accelerator.
"Ha-ha! I'll kill you all! None of you will survive!"
The fuel tanker, a monstrous behemoth, plowed through two more cars, flattening them as it barreled forward at breakneck speed—straight toward them.
Han Wenxue watched in horror as the car ahead was crushed and twisted beyond recognition. Her mouth hung open, but no sound came out. She was paralyzed with fear.
There was no doubt—the people inside those cars were already dead!
If Chen Yi hadn't yanked the steering wheel earlier, she would have been among them, her body mangled and lifeless like the driver of that sedan.
"Was he really trying to save me?"
"You idiot! What are you standing there for? Run!"
Chen Yi had already jumped out of the car. Despite his earlier frustration, he couldn't bring himself to abandon her. He grabbed the petrified Han Wenxue and dragged her out, sprinting toward the side of the road with all his might.
East was the direction of fortune, and Chen Yi instinctively ran toward the east.
There was an entrance to an underground civil defense mall nearby. Underground belonged to the Kun trigram, representing earth, which could counteract the fire element. If they could make it inside in time, they might just have a chance of survival.
"Bang!"
"Screech! Screech!"
They had barely taken a few steps when the fuel tanker slammed into Han Wenxue's Volkswagen Golf, crushing it into a flat sheet of metal.
The tanker's momentum caused its trailer to swing out, colliding with several nearby cars that hadn't managed to swerve away in time.
The combined resistance from the cars and its own speed caused the tanker to topple over, rolling toward Chen Yi and Han Wenxue like a massive iron avalanche.
"Ah!"
Han Wenxue screamed in terror as she was dragged along by Chen Yi. The tanker loomed over them like a towering mountain, its shadow engulfing them. She felt so small, so fragile.
He really was trying to save her.
Chen Yi had saved her time and time again, yet she had repeatedly misunderstood him, doubted him, and even tried to harm him.
Regret flooded her heart. If she could turn back time, she would never have acted so foolishly.
But there was no medicine for regret. Her selfishness hadn't just endangered her own life—it had also dragged Chen Yi into this mess. The man who had always been there to help her, no matter how much she wronged or mistrusted him.
The tanker cast a deathly shadow over them, sealing their fates.
Just as Han Wenxue thought all hope was lost, she felt herself being lifted off the ground. Chen Yi had scooped her up into his arms.
With her cradled tightly against him, Chen Yi charged toward the tanker. At the very last second, he dove to the ground, sliding under the rolling behemoth with mere inches to spare.
They were alive.
Han Wenxue clung to Chen Yi, her arms wrapped tightly around his neck. Tears streamed down her face like broken pearls, soaking his skin and shirt.
They had narrowly escaped death, but the tanker continued its rampage, claiming lives in its path.
"Ahhh!"
The driver of the black Toyota that had rear-ended them earlier let out a blood-curdling scream before falling silent, his body reduced to a mangled heap of flesh and bone.
Blood and gore sprayed from the crushed Toyota, painting the scene with nightmarish horror.
Chen Yi, however, didn't stop. He kept running, his focus unyielding.
Cars belonged to the Qian trigram, representing metal, while the lethal force here was fire, represented by the Li trigram. Chen Yi knew this disaster wasn't over yet.
He suddenly tightened his grip on Han Wenxue, holding her close as he sprinted toward the underground mall.
The entrance was just ahead. If they could make it inside, not even a bomb from the sky could harm them.
But just as they reached the entrance, a deafening explosion erupted behind them.
"Boom!"
The fuel tanker, its tank ruptured from the crash, had ignited, triggering a massive explosion.
Hundreds of liters of diesel fuel detonated, sending a shockwave rippling through the air.
The blast shattered car windows dozens of meters away.
The force of the explosion hit Chen Yi like a sledgehammer, slamming into his back and hurling him forward. He crashed into the wall of the underground mall before tumbling down the stairs like a ragdoll.
"Ugh!"
The backlash from his divination, combined with the impact of the explosion and the fall, left Chen Yi coughing up blood. Darkness engulfed his vision as he lost consciousness.
Bright red blood splattered onto Han Wenxue's pristine white dress, blooming like crimson flowers on snow.
Han Wenxue stared at Chen Yi's dimming eyes, a sense of déjà vu washing over her.
It was the same look he had given her that day when she narrowly escaped death under the billboard.
It wasn't anger—it was exhaustion.
Her grandfather had once told her that revealing the secrets of heaven came with a price.
Chen Yi had revealed those secrets for her sake, not once, but multiple times. And each time, he had paid the price.
Yet she had misunderstood him over and over again. Even when he saved her, even when he suffered because of her, she had believed the worst of him.
If only she hadn't been so stubborn. If only she had listened.
Han Wenxue had never hated herself more than she did in this moment—hated her blindness, her ingratitude, her foolishness. Ignoring her own pain, she clung to Chen Yi tightly, her voice trembling with sobs.
"Chen Yi, I'm sorry… I'm so sorry…"
On the way to the hospital, Han Wenxue refused treatment for her own injuries, insisting on staying by Chen Yi's side. Though he was unconscious, she wouldn't leave him.
Chen Yi had done so much for her, yet she had done nothing for him.
No, she could still do something. She could stay by his side until he was safe.
When they arrived at the hospital, she rejected the doctors' attempts to treat her, standing vigil over Chen Yi as he underwent examination after examination.
Half an hour later, the doctor emerged, accompanied by two police officers.
Chen Yi's injuries weren't life-threatening; he had only fainted from the impact. But the police needed to take him in for questioning. Until their investigation was complete, no one would be allowed to see him.
Han Wenxue tried to explain to the police that Chen Yi was a good man, that he had nothing to do with the explosion. She told them he had foreseen the disaster through divination and had acted to save lives.
The officers listened to her words with cold indifference before walking away without a word. No matter how much she pleaded, they didn't look back.
As the police took Chen Yi away, Han Wenxue sank to the floor, feeling helpless and bitterly mocked by fate.
She had once schemed to send Chen Yi to the police but had failed to find any evidence.
Now, just as she realized he was a good man—the one who had been saving her all along—he was taken away.
Her testimony, though truthful, was powerless and unconvincing.
And the cruelest irony of all?
Chen Yi had been taken because of her—the very person he had risked everything to save.
