Capítulo 246: Chapter 246: The Villain

In Manhattan's Upper East Side.

A silver Chevrolet stopped outside a light gray apartment building at the intersection of Fifth Avenue and East 68th Street. A woman in a black Gucci trench coat got out of the car and, after verifying the address, proceeded towards the building.

In the lobby, a fashionably dressed girl in her early twenties was waiting for her, but the security guard still took the time to confirm their identities before allowing them to proceed to the elevator.

Reaching the 12th floor, the girl, who introduced herself as Megan, led the woman into an apartment.

The apartment was a minimalist luxury duplex with a black and white color scheme. Despite its simplicity, every detail, from the furniture and wall decorations to the staircase, exuded a meticulously crafted artistic vibe.

Standing at the doorway, the woman was momentarily stunned by the luxurious duplex she never dared to dream of. Noticing a hint of pride and scorn in Megan's gaze, she quickly gathered her thoughts and saw that the apartment was being cleaned.

Interestingly, like Megan, the cleaning crew consisted of young women around 20 years old, all scoring above 80 in terms of looks and figure.

After Megan briefly spoke to another girl, she turned and said, "Ms. Fecy is in the wine cellar. Ms. Ahrents, please follow me."

Wine cellar? Downstairs?

As she pondered this, Megan gestured and headed towards a hallway adjacent to the living room, and the woman followed.

The living room was already larger than her apartment in Greenwich. Walking down the hallway, it was apparent that just the single-level space of this duplex was over 4,000 square feet.

The wine cellar, located at the end of the hallway, surprisingly wasn't underground. However, its enclosed, retro brick wall design differed from the rest of the apartment, giving it an underground feel.

Entering the wine cellar, Megan lost her earlier arrogance, politely announcing, "Ms. Fecy, Ms. Ahrents is here."

Sophia Fecy, busy placing a bottle of wine on the shelf, continued her task before approaching and embracing the woman, saying, "Good afternoon, Angie. You look wonderful in that trench coat."

The woman, Angela Ahrents, a 28-year-old newly confirmed President of Gucci America, had met Sophia several times before, finalizing details and agreeing to officially sign the contract today.

Responding to Sophia's embrace, Angela said, "Thank you, Sophie."

"Please wait for a moment," said Sophia, sending Megan away. She carefully placed a bottle of wine on the shelf, gently stroking it, and said, "This is a 1971 white wine from Hegel Winery's Juffer Sonnenuhr Vineyard. 1971 was the only year in decades when the overall climate conditions of Germany's Mosel wine region reached 98 points. The top-quality vineyard covers only three hectares. Last night, I bought this case of wine at Sotheby's for Simon. Angie, how much do you think it cost?"

Angela Ahrents, slightly confused, guessed, "$100,000?"

Sophia smiled but didn't reveal the answer. After placing the remaining bottles, she led Angela out of the wine cellar.

The girls had almost finished cleaning the apartment. Sophia checked everything, then dismissed them before leaving with Angela Ahrents.

It was noon.

The two chose a nearby restaurant for lunch. Sophia explained, "Simon and Jenny aren't in America, so I helped clean their house. I'm actually Simon's housekeeper."

Angela hesitated but couldn't contain her curiosity: "Those girls?"

Sophia replied, "Simon is a perfectionist. He once said he couldn't imagine a middle-aged, overweight Hispanic maid cleaning his room. Those girls are students from Columbia or NYU. They work just three hours a week for this part-time job and earn $500."

Quickly doing the math, Angela realized the cost for cleaning the apartment was substantial: $3,500 per session, over $180,000 a year, exceeding her previous annual salary of $120,000.

Sophia waited a moment before asking, "What do you think?"

Angela, recalling her brief daze when entering the apartment and Megan's unjustified arrogance, inquired, "Sophie, what kind of person is he?"

Sophia, unable to find the right words, replied, "You'll see when you meet him. But you got this job partly because of Simon. Among the candidates, your experience was the least."

Curious, Angela asked, "Did Westeros see my resume?"

Sophia nodded: "Yes."

"And his opinion of me?"

Sophia smiled, "He said, 'This woman is pretty, let her try.'"

Angela, realizing Sophia wasn't joking, was incredulous: "And I got the job just like that?"

"Yes, as a subordinate, I'm good at reading the situation."

Sophia had shown Simon the profiles of potential creative directors and the Gucci America President while in Melbourne. Simon, under strict time management by Jenny, briefly reviewed them. He didn't comment on the key creative director candidates but took a serious interest in Angela Ahrents's profile, leading to his casual assessment.

Sophia, however, didn't choose Angela solely based on Simon's comment.

The main reason was Angela's proposed management philosophy, which aligned perfectly with Gucci's needs. Her impressive work capabilities solidified Sophia's decision, with Simon's favorable impression of Angela being a bonus.

Despite Sophia's playful tone, she emphasized Angela's insight on improving customer experience at Gucci stores, criticizing the arrogance fostered by Gucci's management. Sophia tasked Angela with changing this upon joining.

After lunch, they headed to Gucci America's headquarters in Midtown. By the afternoon, Angela Ahrents was officially the President of Gucci America, responsible for operations of 52 direct stores and numerous licensed counters across North America.

Sophia immediately contacted New York fashion media to announce Angela's appointment, aiming to maximize brand exposure – a strategy she learned from observing Dior and LVMH.

The media focused on Angela's young age and brief six-year career in fashion, questioning her capability to manage such an important division of a venerable luxury brand.

Sophia publicly supported Angela, but the media scrutiny was something Angela had to handle herself. Opportunities and pressures are inseparable.

Interestingly, many executives under Westeros Company are young, like Amy Pascal, who was also 28 when she started working for Simon. However, with Simon's towering presence, the media often overlooks Amy's age.

Choosing Angela also marked Sophia's completion of interviews with two potential creative directors: Tom Ford and Marc Jacobs, both recent standouts in American fashion.

Simon, recalling from memory, knew Tom Ford was Gucci's creative director in the 90s, and both Ford and Jacobs were recognized top designers for many years to come. Simon believed luxury brands should dictate fashion trends rather than seek public approval, similar to Apple's design philosophy.

Thus, Simon wasn't keen on keeping Gucci on its original trajectory. Hiring any of these talented designers could rejuvenate Gucci. Their individual styles would ultimately merge into Gucci's.

Sophia initially favored John Galliano, a Central Saint Martins graduate with a brilliant record. However, his high demands made negotiations with Gucci Europe unfeasible.

Ultimately, between Tom Ford and Marc Jacobs, Sophia chose Ford for his fluency in French and Italian and European work experience, giving him an edge over Jacobs.
