Capítulo 38: Chaos in The World Cup

(Note: Chapter 40 available now in the Cheese Lands.)

Magnus dropped on the couch while his father and Ted finished setting up the tent.

"I'm beat."

"What's got you so tense, sweetie." Andromeda waved her wand, levitating marshmallows into the bonfire while she sat beside him.

She moved his head, placing it on her lap. She started running her fingers through his hair, and he almost blacked out.

Magnus was in a realm of pure comfy.

"It's nothing." He reassured her. "Just a bad feeling."

"In my experience, you shouldn't ignore those hunches. It's magic's way of telling you something isn't right."

She was right, but he couldn't tell her such a thing. He knew something foul was brewing. He knew it would happen tonight, he knew who would be there.

And he'll be ready.

"Maybe." Magnus smiled, "In the meantime, I'll enjoy what I have."

Sirius and Ted returned to find the adorable sight, both agreed to keep silent and let the pair enjoy this moment. Everyone needed a few moments of respite.

Magnus didn't want to wake up anytime soon, but the smell of s'mores being shared managed to lift him up when the threat of death eaters couldn't.

His cousin had just come back from a chat with Hestia Jones, a colleague of hers. Sirius and Ted produced a bottle of Firewhisky, taking a few shots under the watchful eyes of his aunt.

Questions were asked and answers given, their last waking moments were spent laughing and enjoying themselves.

Soon he would be back in Hogwarts, Nymphadora busy with her duties and the adults burdened by a task much too important for any single one of them…

Before the attack could even begin, Kreacher, who had been tasked to watch over them from afar, crushed the glass bead, warning his master and fulfilling his duties for the night.

Immediately, the shift in magic shocked Magnus awake. With no hesitation whatsoever, he rushed to his immobile father under dreamless sleep potion and cast an ennervate on him.

"We're under attack."

No further words were spoken, Magnus rushed to the ladies' part of the tent quickly dismantling the wards. He gave them the same message, and in an instant they gathered their things and readied themselves for conflict.

They didn't have to wait for long, bright lights and explosions disturbed the night. Followed by screams of panic, as a mob a thousand wizards strong formed and fled the tents.

It was pure chaos.

The few aurors and hit wizards stationed there were simply overwhelmed. They stretched too thin attempting to control the mob and stop them from stomping each other to death; they barely managed to do that with the help of some level headed wizards.

The adults with him didn't hesitate long before going off to help, they were all accomplished wizards and witches.

Magnus himself required little to no help, he could escape much easier than any of them if it came to it, after all.

If he had the slightest intention of fleeing, that is.

He took a deep breath, focused his magic and took off.

Fleur wasn't happy, not one bit.

Being woken in the dead of night wasn't her definition of a good time by any margin, the surrounding chaos was just the cherry on the cake.

Still, she had to carry her sister to safety while her overly noble parents set off the quench the fires and help the overrun auror force.

"Calme toi, trésor." she reassured her little angel, or at least tried too.

Gabrielle was shaken from the events, and could barely keep up as she dragged her deep in the forest.

Far from the action, where they could hide safely.

Or at least, they should have, it took her less than ten minutes to feel the presence of foreign magics.

She wasn't nearly naive enough to assume they were fellow escapees, so she changed direction, again and again. Always going deeper within the woods.

After one escape too many, they found themselves choked up. There was a presence all around, fleeing without alerting them was simply impossible.

She thought about hiding Gabby in a trunk while she sets off to distract them, but in the end Fleur simply didn't have the foolishness and blind faith needed to pull off this stunt.

It was all too likely that they would investigate where she came from, and find her helpless little sister waiting.

Suddenly, she dived down in the bushes as she heard a loud screech coming from above.

It moved like a blur, with a wingspan larger than her. It evaded the trees with unnatural swiftness, never slowing down until it landed on a nearby branch. Its piercing golden eyes scanned the surroundings, easily seeing through her hiding spot.

'It's magical.' she thought, feeling a familiar bout of magic from the bird.

Fleur gripped her wand tight, casting a spell would give away her position, if that stupid bird didn't already alert everyone in the ten leagues with its scream.

Her fears were thankfully unfounded, as it left as fast it came, like a mirage.

Fleur didn't have the time to sigh in relief, as soon as he freed her sister's mouth, the screams came.

It wasn't Gabrielle, she wasn't an idiot. Nor was it the pitiful screams of a victim, no. It was the sound of battle, of spells being cast and evaded.

Stretching her senses to their limit, which as a Veela was beyond anything a common witch could aspire to, she felt nine presences all converging in the same point.

'Eight.' she felt a chill.

Fleur held her sister's hand, the hundred yards separating her and the action never felt so small.

'Seven...six.'

She watched her sister's tearful face, wishing for a smile instead. Someone capable of vanquishing wizards so quickly would be a strong opponent, perhaps one beyond her.

'Three.' In another instant, three magics disappeared, one of them disapparated.

"Only one." she whispered, barely able to speak.

She squeezed her sister as tight as she could, feeling the last presence rushing toward her. Wand in hand, she prepared herself for what surely would be the most deadly moments of her lifetime.

Yet even as it closed in, she saw no one.

Nothing but a giant eagle with golden eyes.

Magnus hid behind the tree line, disillusioned with his magic concealed to the best of his ability. He could feel three masked men within his casting range, all of them death eaters.

His magic was depleted, but he still had it in him to crush three more bugs.

'It'll be a tough dance.' He thought, stolen wand in hand. 'Then again, I won't fight fair.'

He started with a subtle transfiguration spell, conjuring atoms of hydrogen on the opposite side of his enemies. He eventually produced a spark, making the small amount of gas crack in a gun-like sound.

With the men distracted, their wands pointing toward the mass of residual magic, he came out of his hiding place and approached as discreetly as he could.

"Show yourself!" He had a voice he knew, but wasn't too familiar with. "And we might just let you leave in one piece."

"Sure." Magnus answers, punctuating his words with three bone breakers.

Two of them found their marks, and the follow up piercing curses only ended up mangling the bodies. Their spokesperson was more skilled, having evaded the first spell and raised a shield against the second.

Still disillusioned, he forced his opponent to cast a Homenum Revelio to battle him. Time he spent bombarding him with curses, hexes.

His foe's shield stood strong, so he changed tactics.

"Bombarda Maxima." He cast on the ground below his target, only slightly inconveniencing him but rising a cloud of smoke and dust.

The coverage was all it took for him to take a more mobile form, in an instant crossing the distance and flanking his clueless foe who had taken up the offense.

"Sectumsempra." He cast, swinging his wand and watching the terrified eyes of the now unmasked man lose their spark.

'Nott Senior.' He thought, not feeling much sympathy for him or anyone else for that matter.

Magnus burned their bodies, picked up their wands and took off once more in the woods.

The night was young, and though he could hardly fight anymore, he might still be able to help a few people.

'Making sure they return safely wouldn't hurt.' He thought, remembering the terrified gaze of the two girls.
