I leaned against the cracked remnants of a skyscraper, my breaths coming in shallow pants.
Sweat dripped down my brow as I rested my hands on my knees, the weight of Excalibur Destruction still palpable even as it rested lightly in my grip.
The city lay in ruins around me, every building reduced to rubble and every street cracked and jagged.
"Man, It's really getting hard to level up these days."
I muttered, looking at the carnage I'd personally wrought.
The simulation had been brutal this time.
Sentinels had swarmed the city in endless waves.
Their power had been deafening, their strikes relentless.
For hours, I'd fought with nothing but Excalibur Destruction, the holy blade slicing through their metallic forms like butter.
Still, the effort had left me drained.
From out of nowhere, Gaia emerged, her voice cut through the lingering silence.
"Well done, Arthur. Another simulation successfully completed. You're getting better at handling multiple enemies without relying on Innovate Clear."
I let out a dry laugh, wiping my forehead with the back of my hand.
"Yeah, thanks for that. But I think we're gonna need to triple the difficulty next time if we want this to actually feel challenging."
"Triple the difficulty? You mean to tell me that the simulation just now wasn't enough?"
Gaia's tone was skeptical.
I shrugged, sheathing Excalibur Destruction with a satisfying click.
"Hey, no pain, no gain. And besides, I like a good workout."
The landscape around me began to shimmer and distort, the destroyed city slowly dissolving into the sleek, futuristic skyline of my inner world, the Land of Steel.
Towering skyscrapers of chrome and glass reflected the artificial sunlight, and holographic signs floated mid-air, displaying unintelligible data streams.
Flying vehicles zipped past in organized lanes, while beneath them, glowing pathways stretched out in a perfect grid.
It was my sanctuary, my mental fortress, and a reflection of my soul.
Gaia and I made our way to a sleek, black limousine that hovered a few inches above the polished metallic ground.
Its aerodynamic design made it look like something straight out of a sci-fi movie.
My Terminator chauffeur stood by the vehicle, its glowing red eyes scanning for non-existing threats.
As we approached, I stepped ahead of Gaia and opened the door for her, bowing theatrically.
"After you, my lady."
Gaia's laugh was soft but warm.
"Oh my, what a gentleman."
She teased as she stepped into the limo, her holographic form taking on a regal air.
I followed her in, shutting the door behind me.
Inside, the limo's interior was sleek and luxurious, with soft white leather seats, a minibar stocked with glowing, futuristic drinks, and a panoramic screen that wrapped around the walls, projecting an endless view of space.
The stars outside twinkled like diamonds against the black void.
I leaned back against the plush seat and tapped the armrest, activating the intercom to the driver.
"The usual spot, but take us to the scenic route. I could use the view."
The Terminator nodded once, its mechanical precision both reassuring and a little creepy.
As the limo began to glide smoothly through the Land of Steel, I let out a contented sigh.
The city outside was breathtaking, with its neon-lit streets, glowing towers, and floating platforms.
It was a masterpiece, and it never failed to leave me in awe.
"You really went all out with the design, didn't you Gaia?"
I commented, my gaze following the streaks of light left by flying vehicles.
Gaia leaned back as she rested her chin on her hand.
"I did a bit of redecorating while you were busy killing yourself. Thought you'd appreciate the updates."
I glanced at her, a smirk tugging at my lips.
"You've got good taste. Thanks for that, by the way. Makes coming back here a little more alive."
The limo glided over a vast expanse of glowing water, the reflection of the city's lights shimmering like fireflies.
For a brief moment, I let myself relax, the weight of my exhaustion temporarily lifted.
[A FEW MINUTES LATER]
The platform descended slowly, the whirring of machinery echoing in the dark, confined space.
The air was cool and still, the only light coming from the faint glow of the Terminator's eyes as it stood at attention.
I leaned back against the plush seat, arms crossed, as we sank deeper into the depths of my inner world.
When the platform came to a gentle halt, the limo door automatically slid open.
I stepped out first, taking in the oppressive darkness surrounding us.
I stood on the edge of the platform as I asked.
"Is it really necessary to keep this place so dark?"
I squinted, trying to make out anything beyond the platform's edge.
The shadows seemed endless, oppressive even.
Gaia's voice was light with amusement.
"It's for dramatic effect. Besides, you didn't complain yesterday."
I shrugged, not bothering to hide my exasperation.
"Fair enough, but it still feels like I'm about to star in a horror movie."
She rolled her eyes.
I clapped my hands, a sharp sound that echoed like a thunderclap in the cavernous space.
One by one, lanterns ignited, their golden flames illuminating the area in an eerie, flickering light.
The sight that greeted me still took my breath away, even though I'd seen it before.
The space was massive, a perfect cubic void with blood-red walls that seemed to pulse faintly, like a living organism.
The floor wasn't solid, it was covered in a shallow pool of thick, crimson liquid that rippled slightly with every movement.
At the center of the space stood the centerpiece, a massive Faraday cage constructed entirely of glowing, holy energy.
Its structure hummed with a low, almost musical resonance, the very air around it vibrating faintly.
Within the cage, chained and silent, was Absalom.
His once-massive form was now reduced to a human size, though the oppressive aura he radiated was no less potent.
He sat in a lotus position, his golden eyes closed, his expression unreadable.
Holy chains glimmered faintly around his neck, wrists, waist, and ankles, binding him securely to the cage.
For a moment, I just stared, the gravity of what I'd done settling over me once again.
Absalom raised his faceless visage, his three golden eyes narrowing as they locked onto me.
His voice, deep and resonant, echoed through the blood-red space.
"ARTHUR... YOU WILL SUFFER-"
I cut him off, folding my arms across my chest.
"Yeah, yeah, I get it. Eternal torment, blah, blah, blah. But seriously, are you still not considering my offer from yesterday?"
Absalom's eyes seemed to burn brighter as he hissed.
"I WOULD RATHER HAVE MY SOUL SEALED AWAY AGAIN BY GOD HIMSELF THAN WORK WITH YOU."
I sighed, pinching the bridge of my nose.
"Figures."
I muttered. For the past day, I'd been trying, and failing, to negotiate with him.
I thought maybe appealing to his bloodlust might get him on board, but nope.
The guy was as stubborn as they came.
Gaia, standing silently beside me, placed a hand on my shoulder.
"Arthur."
She tilted her head toward the car, silently suggesting we leave.
"Yeah, yeah, I'm coming."
I said, shooting one last look at Absalom.
He remained unmoving, like a statue, his chains faintly glowing in the dim light.
As we turned to leave, Absalom's voice called out again, this time directed at Gaia.
"GAIA. TO THINK THAT A PRIMORDIAL SUCH AS YOURSELF WOULD STOOP SO LOW AS TO BE A SLAVE TO A HUMAN. YOU MAKE ME SICK."
Gaia froze for a moment, her back to him.
She didn't respond right away, but I could feel the shift in her energy, a cold, sharp edge that hadn't been there a moment ago.
Slowly, she turned her head, her emerald eyes glinted dangerously.
"Says the half-breed abomination trapped by a mere human. But unlike you, the boy treats me well."
She said with an icy smile.
Then, without missing a beat, she flipped him off and strutted into the car.
I couldn't help but smirk, even as I followed her.
Gaia didn't let anyone talk down to her, not even God himself.
Once we were back in the car and the platform began to rise, I glanced at her.
"You good?"
She waved me off, a small, confident smile playing on her lips.
"His words mean nothing to me."
She said simply.
"Good, because I'd have to smack him around some more if they did."
Gaia chuckled at that, her mood seemingly lightened.
As the car ascended back toward the main cityscape of my inner world, she asked.
"So, what's the agenda for today?"
"Today?"
I repeated, leaning back in my seat.
"I'll be heading into town to visit someone. I'll probably bring Bella too."
"Ohhh, how romantic~"
She teased.
"Shut up."
When I returned to the real world, the first thing I did was stretch, rising from the bed in my room in Grey Haven.
As I rolled my shoulders, I turned to grab a shirt, only to freeze mid-reach.
There, standing by the window, was Belladonna, her back to me.
She was naked, her pale skin glistening faintly as she dried herself off with a towel.
Noticing my gaze, she turned her head, her eyes meeting mine.
She didn't seem the least bit embarrassed... as usual.
"Hey, roomie. You done with your mind training or whatever it is?"
"Yeah, I just finished. You good?"
I replied while maintaining eye contact.
She nodded, a small smile tugging at her lips.
I grabbed a jacket and asked.
"Want to come with me into town? I've got a few errands to run."
Her eyes lit up immediately.
"Really?"
She said, I could almost see a silhouette of a tail wagging behind her.
I chuckled.
"I'll take that as a yes. Get dressed, and let's head out."
[THIRD PERSON POV]
In the dimly lit forge, the rhythmic clanging of metal on metal filled the air.
Sparks danced as the burly blacksmith, his thick beard bristling and his single eyepatch gleaming in the firelight, hammered away at a piece of glowing steel.
The smell of molten iron and burning coal was heavy in the room.
The blacksmith was hard at work crafting new tools, seemingly oblivious to the world outside.
The wooden door to the shop creaked open, letting in a sliver of daylight and snow.
He looked up briefly, pausing mid-swing as he saw Arthur step in, an axe slung casually over his shoulder.
"Ah, it's been a while. Welcome back, young lad."
He rumbled, his voice deep and rough like gravel.
Arthur greeted with a casual wave.
"Good to be back. Busy as always?"
He walked over to the counter, leaning the axe against it.
"Always, lad. Even if it rains or snows, tools don't make themselves after all. What brings you here this time? Axe acting up?"
The blacksmith replied with a grunt, returning to his work.
Arthur chuckled, shaking his head.
"Nah, it's holding up fine. Just thought I'd drop by, see what you've been up to."
As the blacksmith hammered away, the two exchanged small talk.
They spoke of mundane things.
The weather, the state of the town, and some peculiar gossip about a tall figure with a siren for head dancing in the snowy woods.
Arthur smiled at the absurdity of the tale, while the old man chuckled deeply, his voice echoing in the shop.
After a while, Arthur tapped the counter to catch the blacksmith's attention.
"Mind if I ask you something?"
The old man wiped his brow with a cloth and placed his hammer down, turning to face Arthur.
"Ask away, lad."
Arthur slid the axe onto the counter.
"Why did you sell me this pseudo-divine artifact, Hephaestus?"
The room seemed to grow quieter.
The crackling of the forge's flames was the only sound as Hephaestus' brows furrowed.
He stared at Arthur for a long moment before sighing deeply.
Setting down his tools, he crossed his arms and leaned against the counter.
"So, you figured it out? I'm impressed. What gave it away?"
He said finally, his tone calm but laced with curiosity.
Arthur shrugged nonchalantly.
"Let's just say I have a knack for noticing things that don't quite add up. Back to the question, though... why?"
Hephaestus stroked his beard thoughtfully before answering.
"No ill intentions, lad. I figured a Longinus user would need a weapon worthy of their potential. Leave a good impression, you know?"
Arthur's eyes narrowed slightly.
So you knew I have a Longinus, too, huh? Who else knows about this?"
Hephaestus raised his hand solemnly.
"No one, I swear it on the River Styx."
*Thunder*
The weight of such an oath wasn't lost on Arthur.
His gaze softened slightly, though he still looked wary.
"Swearing on the Styx, huh? That's not something I hear every day. Guess I'll give you the benefit of the doubt... for now."
Hephaestus grunted in acknowledgment and resumed hammering, though his movements were slower, more deliberate.
Arthur leaned against the counter, watching the blacksmith work.
"So, what are you doing in a small town like this? Shouldn't you be in Olympus or something?"
Without stopping, Hephaestus replied.
"I'm on a 10 year vacation, believe it or not. Needed a break from the other Olympians and from Dad in general."
He paused to strike the metal again.
"As I was wondering where to go, I sensed a powerful force in this town 5 years ago. So I set up shop here and investigate."
Arthur smirked, crossing his arms.
"And what you found was a five-year-old with a recently awakened Longinus."
The blacksmith chuckled.
"Pretty much, lad. And I can tell you've grown since you left town days ago."
Arthur nods, recalling his adventure in Bucharest.
"Do you know which Longinus I have?"
Arthur asked, his tone curious.
Hephaestus paused, stroking his beard thoughtfully.
"I'd wager it's Innovate Clear. There's a familiar aura about you... reminds me of one of the humans who wielded it long ago."
Arthur felt Gaia stir in his mind.
(Arthur, let me speak with him.)
Arthur wanted to ask why but chose to agree.
All of a sudden, his right eye glowed bright blue.
A small orb of ethereal energy emerged from his body, hovering beside him.
The room seemed to hum with a different energy as Gaia's voice echoed, soft yet commanding.
"Hello, Hephaestus."
Gaia greeted warmly.
Hephaestus straightened, his expression softening into one of respect as he bowed slightly.
"Greetings, great-grandmother. The lad seems to be treating you well."
