Capítulo 1: Terminated

"How dare you!"

Adelina felt the impact as the wrinkled hand came smashing across her face. Her face turned from the impact and tears began to well up within her honey colored eyes from the sharp stinging that resonated in her right cheek. Adelina shakily raised a hand to her face and stared in shock at her assailant.

The woman that stood before her was a stout woman with gaudy jewelry strung across her like an overzealous display board. It managed to distract people from the fine frown lines and crows feet that cracked her face like an egg. However, what was more distracting was the bright red sauce that saturated her once pure white blouse and the noodles which clung to her many necklaces.

The old woman scowled at Adelina. "You did it on purpose didn't you? You ungrateful wench. I come in here so often and leave you amazing tips and this is how you repay me?" The woman screeched as she gestured to her newly decorated shirt.

Adelina hid her red face behind her golden locks. She felt her stomach drop. It was her fault for tripping, however the slap was too much. Adelina clenched her jaw as she bowed her head. "I apologize Madam. I did not insult you on purpose," She apologized.

"If you didn't do it on purpose, does that mean that you are just too stupid and ill mannered to do such a simple task? I've paid a lot of money for this dinner and now I'm covered in it. I doubt I'll ever come here again if the staff is so unskilled that they can't even handle bringing food to a table." The woman huffed in annoyance.

The other patrons began to mutter as the woman drew more attention with her outburst. This had become a huge matter and if this continues Adelina could be fired. She grit her teeth. "I am very sorry about my mistake. I'll be sure to get you a replacement for your meal. I'll also notify the manager and today's dinner will be free of cost." She announced with an apologetic smile.

Adelina quickly shot a look at one of the other waitresses and she ran off to get the manager.

The woman continued to glare at the golden haired waitress as Adelina waited on pins and needles for the manager to arrive. The manager was strict but he was also kind to his employees. She took a shallow breath a bit nervous about how he would handle the situation.

The time dripped on slowly like molasses as the two stood in uncomfortable silence waiting for the manager to arrive.

The woman began to study Adelina's face as though she was trying to recall something.

"You look familiar," The woman pondered. Suddenly her face lit up and the scowl she had dropped while using her energy to think returned. "Ah I know you!" She scoffed.

Adelina felt her heart stop as she recognized the look the woman gave her. She had received that same look at almost every failed job interview, and everyday while she was in college. She hid her face once again. Not here and not now she silently prayed.

"You're that daughter of that business man who was caught for embezzlement." The woman sneered. "Wow and I thought you were only incompetent. It turns out that bad business runs in the family. I wonder why on Earth such a reputable restaurant would hire the daughter of a criminal." The woman harassed with a condescending sneer.

Adelina felt a ball of anger and anxiety begin to swell in her chest. This woman had already slapped her, embarrassed her, and now slandered her family. She clenched a fist by her side to try and suppress the storm that was threatening to leak out.

"What a pity though. I bet the reason you're working here is because your family has sunk so low. I remember reading about you in magazines, the intelligent and beautiful Adelina Hart. You had so many things going for you. You were in the top college, you won so many awards, and you were even being groomed to take over the family business." She paused as she looked me over.

"You have fell so far though. I mean all those scandals. I heard you even slept with questionable men." The witch laughed as she appraised the girl. "You can't even manage enough grace to walk a meal to a table. Those magazines must have been exaggerating about how elegant you once were. Or maybe your crooked, no good parents set that up for you. Money can do many things, I'm sure your father knew that well enough. You might've been better off being an orphan than a daughter of that disgusting family." The woman cackled.

Adelina felt the balloon of anger burst as her hands slammed on the table. She glared at the old woman as the crooked sneer she wore slid off her face.

"Don't speak of my family in that manner." Adelina warned her with a smile that didn't quite reach her eyes. "I have been kind enough to maintain a level of politeness even after you assaulted me. I could press charges against you for assault." Adelina threatened in a calm voice that didn't match the fire that burned in her eyes. "So if I were you, I would watch your words closely from here on out." She hissed low enough for only the woman's ears.

The woman was shocked for only a moment before her face turned red from anger. "Where is the manager! You need to be fired right this instant." The woman screeched.

Adelina reclaimed her composure and stared at the hag with an apathetic look as she continued to throw insults in anger.

"I am truly sorry about this Madam." Adelina let out a sigh of relief as the manager approached with an apologetic smile. The manager offered the old woman a couple coupons good for free dinners as well as compensation for her dry cleaning. She accepted the items with a greedy look.

However, the woman couldn't forgive the young waitress. She shot a glare at Adelina and then flashed a wicked smile.

"If you're truly sorry, then fire that evil wench this instant. She acted violently and rudely towards one of your best customers." The woman cried at the manager with fake tears.

The air left Adelina's lungs as she looked towards her manager. She had expected this after she let her anger get the best of her but she really needed this job, it paid the best out of all the current jobs she had.

The manager looked uncomfortable as he tried to decipher whether this was the truth or not. "I believe I will need to look into this matter a bit more before making any serious decisions." The manager attempted to appease both sides.

"Hmph I see. You don't want your customers to receive the best service and somehow you want to protect an employee who hurt and insulted me. I believe the news would love to have this information. Not to mention her history." The woman spat.

The manager panicked as the woman grabbed her purse. "Wait!" The manager called. Adelina's heart sunk as the manager turned to her with apologetic eyes. The woman stood and sneered as she waited expectantly.

Adelina gave her manager a pleading look, his eyes turned away in guilt. "Miss Adelina, please pack up your stuff and leave. Your employment here has been terminated."

Adelina felt her world crumble. One of the kindest managers she'd had, just turned his back on her without even hearing her side of the story.

The woman gave a wicked smile. "You've made the right choice sir. Maybe the news doesn't need to hear about this after all, seeing as the manager knows the right thing to do." The woman sighed in relief.

Adelina gave the woman a cold glare and turned to head back towards the locker room. She regretted picking a fight, but she couldn't just let that witch get away with insulting her family.

Adelina had lost this battle and now she'd lost the best paying job she'd had for months. The tired girl pulled her work locker open and changed into a worn down black hoodie and jeans.

She chewed on her lip as she debated how to tell her mother what had happened. This was one of the best sources of income and as it stands now their family might not be able to make rent this month.

She was finishing up folding and returning her uniform when she heard giggles approaching.

"I can't believe it turned out that way. It's even better than I thought." A female voice giggled.

"You really tripped her though? I can't believe no one noticed." The other female laughed.

So that was the reason. Adelina gripped her bag even tighter as she recalled the situation. She was always well coordinated and had never dropped any orders before. She thought she had tripped over something but after the slap she must have not been thinking straight. She recognized the voices, they were two fairly new employees. They had started slightly after her but she couldn't think of a reason why they would do something like this.

"She didn't even say anything about it. She must actually be an idiot like that old lady kept saying. To think that she would actually get fired though." The first girl exclaimed gleefully.

"Serves her right though. She's such an attention seeker. The way she flirted with your boyfriend when he came in last time. How disgusting." The second one laughed.

Adelina felt that familiar anger bubble up again. That was such a stupid reason to get someone fired. She was sure she'd never flirted with anyone. She was always professional with customers, minus that last encounter she thought regretfully.

On top of it, she was not even interested in dating right now, too many responsibilities to have to keep up with the demands of a relationship.

Every part of Adelina wanted to confront the two on their evil deeds. But she was exhausted, in pain and her self esteem was running on empty. She decided it was best to let it go. It's not like anything will change now.

Adelina growled as she exited through the back door of the locker room. The cold Spring breeze hit her and she breathed in the fresh air as the cool wind soothed her burning face. She slowly reached a hand up to touch the large red mark that now adorned her right cheek.

"I'll have to hide under my hoodie when I get home," She mumbled. She couldn't let her family see this or they would worry.

Adelina gazed up at the clear night sky. There weren't many stars due to the city lights. She desperately wished a star would shoot across the sky and grant her a single wish.

Her eyes closed and she let her lips turn into a somber smile. She had to keep on going. She swung her bag over her shoulder and headed towards the bus to go home.
